Check that event’s saved thumbnail, reopen it to verify the save, then allow time for the update to appear. YouTube says thumbnail changes may take time to show, but does not specify how long. An older live replay and a newly scheduled stream are separate items.
Fix the thumbnail on the scheduled stream
Work through the event in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the encoder controls its thumbnail. YouTube’s published guidance does not identify one definitive cause for this particular symptom.

- Open the intended event. Go to YouTube Studio > Live Control Room > Manage, select the scheduled stream, and confirm its title and date before changing anything.
- Check for reused settings. If you created the event with Reuse settings, inspect its details. YouTube says the new stream copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key, so an older thumbnail may have carried over. YouTube’s guidance on reusing live-stream settings explains this behavior.
- Change the thumbnail on that event and save. For a scheduled live stream, edit the metadata from the stream’s settings page or while scheduling it, using the thumbnail control shown for that workflow. YouTube’s general video instructions are Studio > Content > choose the video > Thumbnail > Upload file > Save; live-stream workflows may show different controls. See YouTube’s thumbnail instructions.
- Reopen the event. Check whether Studio now displays the new image. If it does, the save is reflected in the selected item; YouTube notes that the change may take time to appear elsewhere, without giving a fixed delay.
- Check the stream when it starts. In Live Control Room, confirm the preview is for the intended event and the feed is connected. This verifies the event/feed selection; it does not show that the encoder controls the thumbnail. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance describes checking the preview.
Make sure you are checking the right stream or replay
YouTube Studio’s Content > Live area includes upcoming streams and live replays as distinct categories. If the scheduled event has the correct image but an older broadcast still shows the old one, select and edit the replay/video item itself. Repeatedly changing the upcoming event will not change which item you are viewing. See YouTube’s Live Control Room guidance.

If the thumbnail still looks old
- The new image is absent after reopening the event: Return to that event’s settings, upload or select the thumbnail again, save, and reopen to verify. Confirm you did not edit a different scheduled stream.
- The new image appears in Studio but not on the public page: Allow time for the change to appear, then check the same scheduled event again. YouTube does not promise a fixed update time.
- The scheduled event is correct but the replay is not: Find the replay under Studio > Content > Live and edit that video item.
- The preview shows the wrong event or no expected feed: Recheck the selected event in Live Control Room and the encoder’s event selection. A preview check can catch a feed/event mismatch, but does not establish that the encoder caused a thumbnail problem.
- You used Reuse settings: Review the new event’s metadata for anything inherited from the prior stream, including its thumbnail.
The available YouTube instructions establish settings reuse, thumbnail upload, possible update delay, and the distinction between upcoming streams and replays. They do not establish whether a particular stale image is caused by a wrong event, an incomplete save, a display delay, or another issue. Diagnose from the item and surface you can verify rather than assuming a platform bug or encoder fault.
