To fix choppy video in an FFmpeg gaming replay stream, first find out whether the choppiness is already present in the local output or appears only after YouTube receives it. Then check the input type, FFmpeg speed and errors, CPU load, stream settings, and YouTube’s stream-health messages—changing one thing at a time. If you are streaming a file in real time, FFmpeg’s -re option may be relevant; do not add it automatically to a live capture input.
Find where the choppiness starts
Compare three views of the same section: the replay file or local output, the encoder’s preview or local archive, and the YouTube player. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder, its errors and CPU load, and the local archive before deciding that the network is at fault. The key distinction is whether the video is already uneven before transmission.

- Choppy in the source or local archive: investigate the source file, frame-rate and timestamp handling, and encoder throughput.
- Local output is smooth, but YouTube’s preview or viewers’ playback is choppy: inspect YouTube stream health and the outbound connection; also check playback on a different connection or quality setting.
- Only some viewers report it: compare playback on another connection and at another player quality before changing the FFmpeg command. A viewer-side playback problem is not proof that the encoder output is bad.
YouTube’s published troubleshooting advice and live settings were checked on October 3, 2026. FFmpeg options can vary by installed build, so verify your local version with ffmpeg -version and consult documentation for that version.

For a replay file sent as a live stream
If FFmpeg reads a media file and you want it to play out at real-time speed, -re reads the input at its native frame rate; FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to -readrate 1. Place input options before the input they govern. For example, the option belongs before the relevant -i when pacing a file input. Confirm the syntax against your installed FFmpeg version and the rest of your command.

Do not assume -re repairs a damaged or variable-frame-rate source, fixes a slow encoder, or improves the internet connection. It controls how quickly FFmpeg reads the input; use the local output and logs to establish whether pacing is actually the problem.
For a live or capture input
Do not add -re by rote. FFmpeg cautions that rate-limiting an actual capture device or other live input this way may cause packet loss. Treat a live source differently from a file and check the installed version’s documentation before changing input pacing.

Inspect FFmpeg throughput and encoder load
- Reproduce the issue with the same section of gameplay. Note the time when the picture becomes uneven so you can compare the console, local archive, and YouTube preview.
- Read the FFmpeg console output during that interval. Look for errors and whether processing speed keeps up with the rate needed for the intended output. Do not infer a universal acceptable CPU percentage; the available guidance does not specify one.
- Watch CPU load while the problem occurs. A high or changing load is a reason to investigate encoder throughput, but CPU load alone does not identify the cause. Check the encoder’s own output and local recording too.
- Review the local archive. If it is also choppy, focus first on the input, timestamps or frame-rate handling, and encoding. If it is clean, continue with ingest and connection checks.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance calls out encoder errors and CPU load as checks when the stream looks poor. Do not diagnose a network fault solely from choppy YouTube playback.

Compare the actual outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe spacing with YouTube’s current live encoder settings and the exact error shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its error guidance also flags incorrect video settings and keyframe frequency, so read the dashboard message rather than guessing which setting is wrong.

The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s published live-ingest guidance checked on October 3, 2026, not universal targets for other codecs, resolutions, or frame rates:
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use the row that matches the stream you are actually sending. Do not copy a bitrate from a different resolution, frame rate, or codec. If YouTube reports a keyframe or video-settings error, compare the transmitted values with its current guidance and make the relevant adjustment rather than lowering or raising several settings at once.

Check the outbound connection and YouTube playback
If the local archive is smooth but the incoming stream is not, inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and test the upload capacity and outbound connection during the stream. A connection test is relevant to this branch; it will not repair choppiness already visible in the local output. If the stream preview looks healthy but a viewer still sees uneven playback, test the player from another connection and at another playback quality before changing the encoder.
Recommended Free Tools
Run a controlled test before the next broadcast
- Use a private or unlisted test stream and a replay segment with movement and audio representative of the gaming content. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and monitoring the stream.
- Record the FFmpeg console output, CPU load, local archive quality, and YouTube stream-health messages while the test runs.
- Change one setting or one part of the workflow at a time, then repeat the same segment. This makes it easier to tell whether the change affected local encoding, ingest, or playback.
- Once the local output and YouTube preview are behaving as expected, check the stream health again before starting the public broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the replay is intended to keep a YouTube channel live continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists—not a camera-live encoder or a diagnosis for a choppy FFmpeg setup. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A slot includes an always-on stream, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service and pricing. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
