A black screen after a YouTube gaming livestream ends does not point to one cause by itself. If it appears only after the replay’s final frame, it may simply mark the end of playback. If the screen goes black before the replay should end, first check whether the archive is available and whether the problem follows the video across devices; a local app or connection issue is also possible.
First, identify when the screen turns black
Check the replay’s timeline and whether audio continues. These clues help separate a normal endpoint from a playback or archive problem, but none proves the cause on its own.

- Only after the final frame: The video may have reached its endpoint. A livestream does not necessarily become a replay: YouTube says a channel may post highlights or a replay, and posted replays appear as videos on the channel. YouTube’s live-stream overview explains this distinction.
- Before the timeline ends: The replay may be defective or unavailable, or playback may be failing on your device or connection.
- The broadcast still appears live: Treat this as a live-stream interruption rather than assuming a completed replay is broken. A stopped feed and an archived video are different states.
Note whether audio stops at the same point, whether other YouTube videos play normally, and whether another viewer sees the same fault. Those observations narrow the possibilities without turning a symptom into a diagnosis.

Fixes for viewers
Test whether the problem is local or tied to the replay
- Open the replay on another supported device, such as a phone or computer.
- If possible, try a different internet connection.
- Play another YouTube video on the original device. If several videos fail there, the device, app, browser, or connection becomes a more plausible source of the issue; it does not prove a hardware fault.

On a computer
- Close and reopen the browser, then try the replay again.
- Update the browser and restart the computer.
- Close unnecessary open tabs before retrying.
In the YouTube app
- Close and reopen the app, and install any available update.
- Restart the device.
- Clear the YouTube app cache if your device provides that option.
On a TV
- Check the TV’s internet connection and the playback quality setting.
- Reopen or update the YouTube app, then restart or update the TV device where applicable.
- Try another playback route: play the video on a phone or computer and cast it, or connect a laptop to the TV with HDMI. YouTube lists these alternatives in its playback troubleshooting instructions.
If only this replay fails and it does so across devices or connections, repeated resets on your device are unlikely to repair a missing or defective archive. Report the issue to the channel or use YouTube’s in-app feedback option after playback trouble.
If you own the gaming channel
Confirm that a replay was created
Check the channel and YouTube Studio for the stream’s archived video, its processing state, and visibility. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. The 12-hour guidance concerns archive capture; it does not guarantee that every shorter stream will appear as a replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Check the live-stream and local recordings
If multiple viewers on different connections report the same problem, inspect the encoder output and the live dashboard rather than treating it as a single viewer’s device fault. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s picture and sound and reviewing a local archive for defects. If your local copy also goes black or loses audio at the same point, that is useful evidence of a recording or encoding problem; if it plays correctly, the YouTube archive or playback path remains a possibility. Review interruptions and archive settings
Check for copyright or stream warnings if the live broadcast was interrupted or replaced by a placeholder image. YouTube says copyright detection can replace a live stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; Content ID claims on an archived live video are made after the stream is completed. That makes copyright a possible creator-side context, not a confirmed explanation for a particular black replay. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

For channels using the YouTube Live API, immediate post-broadcast playback depends on the relevant broadcast setting and enableArchive being enabled. This is a creator/API configuration, not something a viewer can change. The setting is described in the YouTube Live API documentation for LiveBroadcasts.
