On a phone, the comment area is commonly collapsed and must be tapped or expanded before you can read the full discussion or a pinned comment. The underlying features are mostly shared, but sorting, moderation, Android-only views, touch gestures, browser mode and gradual interface rollouts can make the two experiences look different.
Desktop and mobile are not one single YouTube layout
“Mobile” can mean the YouTube app, YouTube in a phone browser, or a phone browser switched to Desktop mode. Those environments can expose the same account and video features while arranging controls differently. A computer browser is the clearest desktop reference; a native phone app and a mobile browser are separate cases.

YouTube documents feature behavior rather than one permanent arrangement of every button. Screen size, operating system, account state and staged product changes can alter what appears first. Therefore, use the procedures below to find a feature instead of assuming that every watch page has the same columns, previews or comment height.

Where are YouTube comments on mobile?
On a computer
Open a video in a desktop browser and scroll through the watch page. YouTube’s computer help documentation describes the comments section beneath the video. The exact width, spacing and relationship to recommendations can change, but the watch-page flow is the reliable mental model. You do not need a separate comments page for ordinary viewing.

If a channel has disabled comments or imposed a restriction, the section may be unavailable even though the page itself loads normally. Those account and video settings matter more than whether you are using a large or small screen. YouTube’s instructions for interacting with comments are in its computer comment help page.
In the YouTube mobile app
On a phone, look below the player for the comments row or preview and tap it to expand the section. The expanded view is where you inspect the full thread, replies and any pinned item. A compact preview is a space-saving presentation, not evidence that the creator has no comments.
Replies remain threaded beneath their original comment. If you open a reply, use the back control for the comment view rather than assuming that the entire watch page has changed. The app can also present comments in a sheet or another touch-friendly arrangement as YouTube refines the watch page; the action is still to select the comments area.

A phone browser is not automatically identical to the app. YouTube documents both Mobile Web and Desktop mode for mobile browsers. Desktop mode requests the computer-style site from the browser, but the available screen area, browser controls and touch input can still affect what you see. YouTube also notes that editing and uploading are not available in mobile browsers, a limitation that concerns browsing generally rather than proving a particular watch-page element is always in one position. How to see a pinned YouTube comment on your phone
Phone steps
- Open the video in the YouTube app or in your phone browser.
- Move below the player and select the comments row or expand control.
- In the opened comment view, look at the top of the thread for the “Pinned by” label and the channel name.
- If the pinned item is not immediately visible, verify that the section is fully expanded and that you are not looking only at a short preview.
On a computer, the pinned comment is surfaced at the top of the watch-page comments area with the “Pinned by” label. On mobile, the additional tap is the important difference. The creator’s pin does not become a normal chronological comment simply because you are using a phone.

Pinning does not override every visibility rule. A channel can disable comments, limit participation to subscribers or members, or set a minimum subscription time. A private video does not have comments. If one of those conditions applies, changing from desktop to mobile will not restore the discussion.
Comment sorting: Top, Newest and what viewers actually see
Creator setting versus viewer ranking
Creators can configure a video’s comment display in YouTube Studio as Top or Newest. YouTube’s comment-setting documentation explains the creator-side control in its settings guide. The setting is attached to the video, so moving between a computer and a phone does not create an independent mobile sort preference.
When YouTube explains its comment filters, it describes comments as sorted by Most relevant by default in that guidance. Labels and controls can vary by surface, so distinguish the creator’s configured choice from the order a particular viewer is currently offered. A phone’s compact comment preview may show only a subset before you open the full list.
Why a comment can be missing from Top
YouTube says its Top comments selection uses multiple relevance and interaction signals. The system may omit material it considers unlikely to be valued or interacted with. Consequently, a comment that is not in Top comments has not necessarily been deleted, hidden by the creator or blocked by your device.
- Open the complete comment section rather than judging from the preview.
- Use the available sort control and check Newest.
- Search the resulting thread for the author or wording, remembering that replies stay nested under their parent.
- If the comment is still absent, consider moderation, eligibility and account restrictions before blaming the desktop/mobile layout.
The advice to check Newest first comes from YouTube’s explanation of comments that are not showing. It is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that every comment will appear there.

Why comments may be unavailable or filtered
Video and channel controls
- The creator can turn comments off for the video.
- Participation can be limited to subscribers or members, including a required minimum subscription time.
- Private videos do not have comments.
These are content and audience rules, not layout differences. A larger monitor cannot expose a comment area that the creator has disabled, and opening the mobile app cannot bypass a subscriber-only requirement.

YouTube can hold or filter comments under moderation systems. A comment can also remain eligible while being ranked below the Top view. Read the platform’s explanation of these cases in the comments-not-showing help article. It explains why absence from a prominent list should not be treated as proof of removal.
When investigating, compare the same video and signed-in account in the same mode first. Switching devices while also changing accounts, sort controls and browser mode introduces several variables at once.
Android’s Members comments view
YouTube documents a Members comments view as exclusive to Android mobile devices. It is not evidence that iPhone, iPad or desktop has an identical view, so do not use an Android screenshot as a universal description of mobile comments.
The view is related to membership access, while Top comments ranking still uses relevance and interaction signals. A member comment not appearing in Top has not automatically been removed; check the appropriate view and Newest ordering where available. This Android-only qualification is one of the clearest functional differences between mobile platforms.

How the video player layout differs
Precise seeking is shared, gestures are not
YouTube has described precise seeking on both desktop and mobile. While you move through the video, a row of thumbnails provides visual feedback so you can target a moment more accurately than dragging blindly along the timeline. On a computer, you drag the seek control with a pointer. On a phone, you drag or swipe with a finger. The feature has the same purpose even though the gesture and available space differ.
The thumbnail row is an example of shared functionality expressed through platform-specific interaction. It does not establish that every account currently has an identical player, because YouTube rolls product changes out gradually. If the strip is not present, update the app or try the same video in another supported surface before concluding that the feature is desktop-only.
Why controls can move or collapse
A phone must reserve space for the video, title, channel actions, recommendations and touch targets. Controls may therefore be condensed into rows, sheets or expandable areas that would be visible at once on a wide display. YouTube does not promise a single pixel-level arrangement across screen sizes, and a phone browser in Desktop mode is not a perfect substitute for a computer with a mouse and a large viewport.
Use the label or icon associated with the action rather than relying on its position. For comments, find the comments row; for seeking, use the timeline; for a pinned item, expand the discussion. This approach survives modest redesigns better than memorizing coordinates.

How creators change comment settings
On a computer with YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select the video whose discussion you want to configure.
- Open the video’s comment settings.
- Choose the available display order, such as Top or Newest, or apply the relevant participation and moderation option.
- Save the change, then open the watch page in a separate tab to confirm what viewers receive.
The exact Studio navigation can be refined as YouTube updates its interface, but the control is managed in Studio rather than by changing the viewer’s phone layout. A creator should test both a computer watch page and the expanded mobile comment view after saving.
In the YouTube app
YouTube also provides video comment settings in its mobile app. Open the creator tools for the selected video, enter the comment settings and review the display or participation choice before saving. The app is a management surface; it does not mean every viewer will see comments in the same visual arrangement as the creator.
When a setting appears not to work, first verify that you edited the intended video and account. Then check the watch page after allowing the change to propagate. A viewer’s Top/Newest choice, ranking signals and moderation filters can still affect which individual comments are visible.
Troubleshooting by situation
“I cannot find comments on my phone”
- Confirm that you are below the player and looking for the comments row, not only the title or description.
- Tap to expand the section; a collapsed preview can hide both ordinary comments and the pinned item.
- Check whether the video is private, comments are disabled, or participation is restricted.
- If you are in a browser, identify whether it is Mobile Web or Desktop mode, then compare with the app if available.
“The pinned comment is missing”
- Open the full comment section rather than reading the preview.
- Look for “Pinned by” and the channel name at the top of the opened thread.
- Make sure you are viewing the same video and account; a different upload may not have the same pin.
- If no comments are allowed on the video, there cannot be a visible pinned comment.
“My comment appears on desktop but not mobile”
- Expand the mobile section completely.
- Check Newest instead of relying on Top or Most relevant.
- Look inside the parent thread if the comment is a reply.
- Review membership, subscriber and moderation conditions.
“The video controls look different from a friend’s”
- Compare app versus browser, not only phone versus computer.
- Check whether the browser is requesting Desktop mode.
- Allow for YouTube’s staged interface rollouts and account-specific experiments.
- Use the control’s function—timeline for seeking, comments row for discussion—rather than its exact location.
Why YouTube keeps changing the watch page
YouTube’s design direction is to reduce clutter and keep attention on the video. In a YouTube Blog post dated August 13, 2026, Jonathan Terleski, vice president of user experience, wrote: “The interface shouldn’t compete with the video you’re trying to watch.” The statement appears in YouTube’s design-principles post. It helps explain why secondary material such as comments may be compressed on a phone while remaining available after a tap.
A separate product update describes watch-page changes and the thumbnail row for precise seeking across desktop and mobile. It says the updates would roll out gradually; read the announcement at YouTube’s product blog. Gradual rollout language matters: a documented feature can reach accounts at different times, and a screenshot from one device is not proof of a universal current layout.
Which version should you use?
Choose a computer when
- You need the broadest watch-page view with comments in the normal page flow.
- You are managing comment settings in YouTube Studio.
- You want pointer-based seeking and a larger workspace for reading long threads.
Choose the app when
- You want touch gestures, quick expansion of the comments sheet and phone notifications.
- You are on Android and need the documented Members comments view.
- You want to manage a video’s comment settings from the mobile app.
Use a phone browser when
- You cannot install the app or need a quick web session.
- You want to switch between Mobile Web and Desktop mode to test a layout.
- You understand that mobile-browser editing and uploading are limited compared with the app or computer.
The practical answer to “why does YouTube look different?”
The difference is a combination of viewport size, touch versus pointer input, app versus browser surface, creator and moderation settings, and staged design changes. Desktop generally exposes comments in the watch-page flow; mobile commonly asks you to expand them. Both can show pinned comments, threaded replies, sorting controls and precise seeking, but each surface prioritizes those functions differently.
When a feature seems missing, identify the platform first, expand the relevant section, check the creator’s settings and then test the alternate sort or browser mode. That sequence separates a real eligibility or moderation issue from a simple presentation change.
