A copyright strike after YouTube removes an active livestream blocks the channel from livestreaming for seven days; if the channel gets another copyright strike, the restriction lasts 14 days. YouTube does not explicitly say that a copyright strike automatically makes every scheduled livestream private or cancels it. Check the specific event in YouTube Studio and read YouTube’s notice for your channel’s status.
Can you start a scheduled stream during a copyright livestream restriction?
No. YouTube says that when it removes an active livestream for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and livestream access is restricted for seven days. If the channel gets another copyright strike, the livestream restriction lasts 14 days. A scheduled stream cannot be started while livestream access is restricted. YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance describes the restriction and its duration.

That answers whether you can go live, but not what happens to the scheduled event itself. YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance does not explicitly say that an existing scheduled stream is automatically canceled or switched to private. Check the event’s visibility and whether Studio allows you to start it; do not assume either outcome from the strike alone.
Does YouTube automatically make scheduled streams private?
YouTube explicitly documents an automatic privacy change for a different enforcement category: a Community Guidelines strike. During that penalty period, scheduled public content is set to private, and the creator must reschedule it after the restriction ends. That rule is stated on YouTube’s Community Guidelines strike page; it should not be presented as an automatic consequence of a copyright strike.

| What happened | What it means for the channel | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Copyright strike | YouTube removes content following a valid legal copyright removal request and applies a strike. Removal of an active livestream for copyright restricts livestream access for seven days; another copyright strike can make the restriction 14 days. Three active copyright strikes within 90 days can put the channel and associated channels at risk of termination. | Read the email and check the Dashboard or Content section in Studio for active copyright strikes. Copyright-strike guidance and account-standing guidance. |
| Content ID claim | A claim typically does not by itself result in a copyright strike. A claim on an archived livestream may be made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it. | Check the specific notice in Studio and distinguish a claim from a removal request. Copyright-strike guidance and live-stream copyright guidance. |
| Community Guidelines strike | This is a separate policy category. YouTube says scheduled public content becomes private during the penalty period and must be rescheduled afterward. | Use the notice and the relevant Community Guidelines strike guidance; do not treat this rule as the copyright-strike rule. |
| Live interruption without a confirmed strike | YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may show a placeholder, warn the creator, and temporarily interrupt or terminate a stream if the content remains. A stream can also be terminated if it receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. | Check Studio for the interruption reason and any listed restrictions. Copyright issues with live streams. |
What to do after the notice arrives
- Read the email carefully. Identify whether it describes a copyright strike, a Content ID claim, or a scheduled copyright removal request. YouTube says official copyright-strike notifications come from
[email protected]. Do not treat an email as genuine solely because its wording looks familiar; confirm the status in Studio. See YouTube’s strike guidance and copyright removal request guidance. - Check YouTube Studio. Open the Dashboard or Content section and look for active copyright strikes or livestream restrictions. If the stream stopped, YouTube directs creators to check the dashboard. Then open the scheduled livestream and verify its visibility and whether it can be started.
- If removal is scheduled, check the deadline and options in the notice. YouTube says a scheduled copyright removal request may provide seven days before removal and a strike take effect. Depending on the notice and case, deleting the content before the deadline, obtaining a retraction, or canceling an appeal in the qualifying case can avoid the strike. Follow the instructions in the actual notice; the available options depend on the case. About copyright removal requests.
- If a strike has already been applied, do not assume deleting the video clears it. YouTube lists three resolution routes: complete Copyright School and wait 90 days for the strike to expire, obtain a retraction, or submit a valid counter notification. A strike expiring does not reinstate the removed video. Understand copyright strikes.
- If you have a licence, check allowlisting with the rights holder. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder to add your channel, and check Studio for the current event’s status. Copyright issues with live streams.
Keep the two restriction clocks separate
The livestream restriction and the copyright strike do not use the same clock. YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance gives seven days of livestream restriction after a copyright removal of an active livestream, or 14 days if the channel gets another copyright strike. Separately, a strike can expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed. The strike may therefore remain on the account after livestream access is restored.
