If you have a valid license for the music in your YouTube livestream, gather the exact license terms and records showing that they cover the track, recording, livestream, replay, channel, territory, dates, and monetization at issue. Then dispute the claim in YouTube Studio with a concise, accurate explanation. YouTube says the claimant reviews the dispute; a receipt or attachment does not guarantee that the claim will be released.
What proof should you gather?
YouTube does not prescribe a universal document-upload checklist for a Content ID dispute. Treat the following as a practical evidence bundle to help you verify the license and explain your position—not as a platform-mandated attachment list. Keep the records together, then cite the relevant facts in Studio’s dispute form.

- The license that applied on the stream date: Save the signed agreement, order confirmation, or exact online terms. For terms that can change, keep a dated copy or other record of the version you accepted.
- Identification of the music: Note the track title, artist or composer, and exact recording or version used. Record the claimed segment and timestamps shown in the claim details.
- Who granted the rights: Preserve the licensor’s identity and any available evidence that it could grant the rights relevant to the recording, composition, or both.
- Permission matching the use: Find the language covering YouTube, livestream or broadcast use, and the archived replay or later on-demand viewing.
- Scope and conditions: Check territory, term, channel or account coverage, monetization or revenue-sharing conditions, and attribution requirements.
- Library or platform records: If you obtained the track through a service, keep the relevant account and subscription details, receipt, license certificate, and track-specific usage terms.
- Confirmations about the claim: Save correspondence from the rights holder or distributor confirming authorization for your channel or stream. If the provider offers a Content ID allowlisting process, keep any confirmation of that step.
In the dispute, state the actual basis—such as permission under a license whose scope covers this use, or a specific misidentification—and keep the explanation factual. YouTube says the claimant reviews the dispute, so do not suggest that submitting a receipt guarantees release. YouTube’s dispute guidance does not set out a universal required evidence format.

Check that the license covers this livestream and its replay
“Licensed music” is not enough by itself. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have the necessary rights for live content and archived content, including applicable music licensing rights. Compare the license wording with the actual use rather than relying on a general claim that the track is cleared.

Verify both the composition and the recording
A song’s underlying musical work (the composition) and a particular sound recording (the master) are distinct rights. Public-performance rights may be administered through performing-rights organizations, while a record label or its representative commonly controls master rights. A grant that appears to cover one layer should not be assumed to cover the other. YouTube describes these distinctions in its music rights guidance.
Match the grant to the use
Confirm that the permission covers the specific recording and track, YouTube distribution, live broadcast, archived replay or on-demand viewing, relevant territories and dates, your channel, and monetization as applicable. YouTube says Creator Music terms vary by track; its revenue-sharing tracks are not eligible for livestreams. Do not assume that a generic music subscription covers a livestream or its archive. See Creator Music usage details for YouTube’s explanation.

For U.S.-focused context, the Music Publishers Association says making an audiovisual recording of a live performance for streaming requires synchronization permission in addition to public-performance permission. That is industry guidance focused on the United States, not a universal legal conclusion; rights and contract terms vary by country. See the Music Publishers Association copyright resource center.

Dispute the claim in YouTube Studio
- Open the claim details. In YouTube Studio, open the affected video and its restrictions or copyright claim details. Identify the claimant, the claimed music segment, the territory, and the policy applied. A video may have different claims in different territories or claims from more than one claimant. YouTube explains the possible effects of claims in its Content ID claims guidance.
- Compare the claim with your records. Check that the claimed track and recording match the license, and that its use and scope cover the stream and replay in question.
- Dispute only with a supportable basis. If you have the necessary rights or the match is mistaken, choose the accurate reason in Studio and briefly explain the relevant grant or identification issue. YouTube says the claimant has 30 days to respond to a dispute. See Dispute a copyright claim.
- If rejected, review the appeal carefully. Check Studio for appeal eligibility and the current options. YouTube says a claimant has 7 days to respond to an appeal; an eligible blocking claim may offer “Escalate to Appeal.” If the appeal is rejected, the claimant may submit a copyright removal request, which can lead to a strike if valid. Review YouTube’s appeal guidance before proceeding.
- If the license does not cover the use, do not say that it does. Consider the options Studio offers for resolving the claim, such as removing or replacing the claimed content.
Know what a claim means—and what it does not
A Content ID claim is not itself a copyright strike. Depending on the claimant’s policy, a claim may monetize, track, or block a video, and its effect can differ by territory. A copyright takedown request is a separate process; a valid request can remove the video and result in a strike. Check the specific claim and territory in Studio rather than assuming every claim has the same effect. YouTube explains Content ID claim policies here.

A claim may affect monetization while a dispute is pending. YouTube says revenue may be held depending on when the dispute or appeal is filed, and revenue data will not appear in Analytics during an active dispute or appeal. Check the current Studio guidance for your claim because workflows can change. See YouTube’s guidance on monetization during Content ID disputes.
