Compare the same device at the usual problem time and a quieter time, then repeat the test over Ethernet if possible. An evening pattern is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove Hathway congestion.
Start with a repeatable evening test
Run a short comparison at the time buffering normally occurs and again during a quieter period. Keep the device and test location the same so the results are easier to compare. Hathway notes that speed-test results can vary with congestion and available bandwidth (Hathway broadband FAQ).

- Write down the date and time, streaming device, room, and whether it is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Record the speed-test result and YouTube playback quality. Note whether the video is HD and whether playback improves if you select a lower quality.
- Record other household activity, such as downloads, cloud backups, video calls, or other streams.
- Repeat the comparison at a quieter time using the same device and location. One result is not enough to identify a bottleneck.
TRAI points subscribers to its MySpeed App/Portal for broadband speed measurements. It says providers must disclose typical speeds in tariff offerings; TRAI itself does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed (TRAI Broadband FAQ, updated 1 October 2026).

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If you can, connect a compatible computer or streaming device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Compare wired and Wi-Fi results at the same time, ideally on the same device. Hathway’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking whether the connection is wireless or direct LAN, and says a direct cable is generally faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi (Hathway troubleshooting guide).

This comparison narrows the possibilities; it does not prove the cause. A wired test may still be affected by the router, the device, the provider network, or the speed-test server. If wired playback is steady but Wi-Fi buffers, first investigate the local wireless connection rather than buying a faster broadband plan.
Check the viewing spot and another device
Test beside the router, then at the usual viewing location. Distance, walls, interference, device Wi-Fi capability, and multiple active devices can affect Wi-Fi performance, according to Hathway (Hathway broadband FAQ). YouTube also recommends testing the connection near the TV, ensuring it is within router range with minimal interference, and minimizing other connected devices (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming and video issues).

Try another supported device on the same Wi-Fi. If only one device buffers, an app or device issue is plausible, but not proven. If several devices have the same problem, check the router and service status, then continue with the wired comparison and time-stamped record.
Reduce competing traffic and test YouTube playback
Temporarily pause other high-bandwidth activity
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video calls, and other streams, then repeat the test. Hathway notes that active devices share available bandwidth and suggests pausing high-bandwidth activities while troubleshooting (Hathway broadband FAQ). If playback improves, household demand may be contributing; the test does not establish that it is the only cause.

Adjust quality and restart the app or device
YouTube Help recommends manually adjusting video quality, quitting and reopening the app, restarting the device, checking for system updates, and testing another supported device. Its current troubleshooting page recommends a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That is YouTube’s HD recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback or a broadband minimum set by TRAI (YouTube Help).
For live programming, YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can cause problems or delay a stream even on a good network. Lowering a broadcast’s delay setting is not a general remedy for ordinary viewer-side buffering.

Read the results without jumping to a diagnosis

When and how to contact Hathway
If multiple devices remain slow, particularly during a wired test, contact Hathway Broadband at 1800 419 3114 (Hathway Contact Us). Give the support agent the dates and evening time range, connection type, devices tested, results, and whether competing activity was paused. Ask for the complaint to be logged and keep its reference or docket number.

Hathway describes a complaint-reference process and escalation to its Appellate Authority if a complaint is unresolved within the applicable timeframe or the customer is dissatisfied with the resolution. Check Hathway’s contact page for current support channels before contacting it.

Do not upgrade the plan before isolating the problem
A higher advertised plan speed does not identify the bottleneck. The right plan depends on the subscriber’s current service, location, household usage, and measured performance. A plan change cannot by itself fix weak Wi-Fi coverage or an underlying line fault. Hathway’s plan page offers generalized plan information, not a diagnosis of an individual connection (Hathway Broadband).
