Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf YouTube starts buffering after a device switches from Ethernet to Wi-Fi, the switch is a useful clue—not proof that YouTube is down or that the Wi-Fi adapter is faulty. First identify which device changed connections, then compare playback on another device or network and check whether other services are affected. Those comparisons help narrow the problem before you change network settings or buy hardware.
First clarify what “server” means
“YouTube stream buffers after the server switches from Ethernet to Wi-Fi” can describe different situations. The “server” might be the device watching YouTube, a home media server relaying video to another screen, or a system sending a live broadcast to YouTube. The steps below address watching a YouTube video or live stream. Playback advice does not diagnose an outgoing broadcast or encoder upload problem.

Identify the device whose connection changes and note whether the switch happens automatically or because someone reconnects it manually. If another machine relays video to the playback screen, record which machine actually changes from wired to wireless.

1. Reproduce the buffering and compare devices
- Use the same YouTube video or live program and, if possible, keep the playback quality setting the same while testing.
- Note when the connection changes and whether buffering begins immediately or later.
- Try the same playback on another supported device. YouTube recommends testing another device and changing the internet connection when troubleshooting playback: YouTube playback troubleshooting.
- Check whether other websites or services stall on the affected device, and whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi network have trouble.
These comparisons help localize the symptom, but do not prove its cause. Trouble across several devices and services points toward a shared network or internet connection; trouble limited to one device or to YouTube narrows the next checks to that playback path.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
2. Test playback quality and network load
- If YouTube lets you choose playback quality, lower it and see whether playback becomes steadier. This is a test, not a diagnosis.
- Pause or reduce other network activity while testing. YouTube recommends reducing competing network use when playback is slow.
- If the wireless connection is weak, test nearer the router, with fewer obstructions and sources of interference between the device and router. YouTube’s guidance recommends keeping the device within router range with minimal interference.
For live programming, network congestion and other conditions can also affect playback, according to YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. A single buffering incident does not establish an outage.
3. Use operating-system guidance for the device you have
If the affected device runs Windows, use Microsoft’s separate official guides for Ethernet connection problems and Wi-Fi connection issues. Follow the guide that matches the connection and symptom. Avoid changing advanced adapter settings until you know the operating system, adapter, and specific problem; the buffering symptom alone does not identify a setting to change.

4. Investigate DNS only when there is a reason
Changing DNS is not a universal fix for buffering. Consider it only if name resolution behaves differently across connections or diagnostics point to DNS. Google documents that DNS settings are configured differently depending on the operating system, version, or device, and its troubleshooting material describes several possible causes of inconsistent results: captive Wi-Fi portals, router malware, ISP or network behavior, suboptimal routing, or limited capacity in a nearer metro area.
Google’s documentation explains that the procedure for changing DNS varies by operating system, version, and device: Google Public DNS setup guidance. If DNS tests do not resolve the issue, Google’s guidance is to seek help from the ISP or network administrator rather than assume a particular DNS change will solve it.

5. Escalate based on how widely the problem occurs
- If several devices and services stall on the same network, investigate the shared router, network, or ISP connection.
- If only one device is affected, focus on that device’s connection and YouTube playback path.
- If the issue is limited to YouTube playback, use YouTube’s in-app feedback option to report the playback trouble.
Common misdiagnoses to avoid
- “Wi-Fi caused it, so the adapter is bad.” The timing is a clue, but it does not establish an adapter fault.
- “YouTube is down.” Buffering on one device after a connection switch does not establish a YouTube outage.
- “Changing DNS will fix it.” DNS is only one possible avenue, and the evidence should point there before you change it.
- “I need a new router, cable, adapter, or diagnostic tool.” No hardware limitation or failure follows from the title alone. Identify a specific fault before considering a purchase.
Or let it run in the cloud
