If your YouTube archive appears to stop after an encoder disconnects and reconnects, first check whether YouTube is still receiving the stream, then inspect the encoder and your local recording. A reconnect does not guarantee one continuous YouTube archive. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup and checking that the file is growing while you broadcast.
What to do when the archive stops after a reconnect
- Check Live Control Room. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and review its status and preview to see whether YouTube is receiving video. The exact controls depend on your encoder and stream configuration. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the encoder. Look at its status and output. YouTube advises using the latest version of your encoder. If its signal looks healthy but Live Control Room is not receiving it, investigate the outbound internet connection.
- Check the local recording. If you recorded locally, play through the time around the reconnect and look for a gap, missing segment, or damaged audio or video. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup; during a broadcast, confirm the file is actually growing.
- Change the stream key only for a relevant error. If the encoder reports a startup or authentication error, copy the current stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder, following YouTube’s stream-key instructions. A key reset is not a general remedy for every dropped connection. Treat the key like a password.
- If the cause appears network-related, check upload capacity. Compare the stream bitrate with available upload bandwidth and check whether the connection is stable. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth free beyond the stream bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips and troubleshooting advice.
- For the next broadcast, rehearse failover if you have a backup encoder configured. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. Do this in a test, not during an important live event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Why a reconnect may leave a gap in the archive
YouTube can automatically archive live streams that run for less than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, according to YouTube’s archive guidance. The 12-hour boundary is not a promise that a shorter broadcast will be saved as one uninterrupted file after a connection failure. The official guidance does not establish that every reconnect preserves a continuous archive, or that YouTube can restore a missing local recording.

For important broadcasts, a local recording gives you a separate copy to inspect and keep. YouTube does not specify a universal reconnect procedure for every encoder, so the exact recovery controls vary by software and setup.
Live DVR is not a creator-side recording backup
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause or rewind playback while a stream is live; it does not recover or repair the creator’s recording. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Check YouTube’s DVR information for viewer controls and limitations.

Prevent the same problem on a future stream
Keep a local archive and verify it
- Enable local recording in your encoder and choose a storage destination with enough free space for the broadcast.
- During the stream, verify that the recording file is growing; a recording option being enabled does not by itself prove that usable footage is being written.
- After a disconnect, inspect the section around the interruption rather than assuming the local file is complete.
An external SSD can be one possible destination for a local backup, depending on your recording software and computer. YouTube does not endorse a particular drive, capacity, or brand.
Leave upload headroom
Keep the stream bitrate within the upload capacity available to the encoder, with roughly 20% of that capacity left free as YouTube recommends. A speed result alone does not establish that a connection will remain reliable throughout a broadcast.

Test a configured backup encoder
If your setup includes a primary and backup encoder, test rollover before relying on it. YouTube’s suggested test is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player switches to the backup. A backup encoder can help protect the live session, but it does not replace a local archive for preserving a copy of the event.
Know what stream keys and protocols can—and cannot—do
A stream key and stream URL tell the encoder how and where to send the feed. Updating the key is appropriate when the encoder reports a relevant startup or authentication error, not as a default response to every interruption. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, including a backup server URL option for compatible encoders; choosing HLS is a configuration option, not a guaranteed fix for a particular network or recording problem. See YouTube’s HLS guidance.

Common symptoms and fixes
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room no longer shows an incoming feed | Encoder output, encoder health, and outbound internet connection | Check the encoder’s status and network; use the latest encoder version as YouTube advises. |
| The encoder reports a start or authentication error | Whether its configured stream key matches the current key in Live Control Room | Copy the current key into the encoder. Do not reset it merely because a stream dropped. |
| The YouTube archive is missing or appears incomplete | The stream’s total duration and the local recording around the reconnect | For YouTube’s archive limit, streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Check the local file for gaps or damage. |
| The encoder looks healthy, but the feed is unstable | Available upload bandwidth and connection reliability | Ensure the bitrate fits the connection and leave about 20% upload headroom. |
| A backup encoder is configured but rollover is uncertain | Whether the player switches when the primary encoder fails | Rehearse by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm rollover. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs pre-recorded videos to keep playing 24/7, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera input.
