If you’ve ever been stuck with blocky faces, smeared text, or blurry details from an older upload, this is designed to reduce that “soft” look.
This guide covers what Super Resolution is, where it typically appears, how to enable it across platforms, and how to judge whether it’s actually helping. You’ll also get troubleshooting steps when the option doesn’t show up or the improvement doesn’t feel real.

What YouTube Super Resolution is
Super Resolution is an AI-based video enhancement feature that attempts to reconstruct finer detail when the source video is low quality (for example, limited resolution, heavy compression, or older encodes). Instead of only displaying the stream at your chosen playback resolution, it adds a model-driven “detail recovery” pass to make the image look less blurry.

- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
In practical terms, it targets the two problems viewers notice most in low-quality uploads:
- Soft edges (especially around faces, hairlines, logos, and text)
- Compression artifacts (blockiness and smearing in motion-heavy scenes)
Super Resolution doesn’t magically create new information that wasn’t captured at all. But it can improve the perceived sharpness and clarity—particularly for content that still contains usable structure, just encoded or delivered at low fidelity.
Why this matters for low-quality videos
Low-quality videos tend to be “low” for different reasons, and Super Resolution helps most when the underlying image still has patterns worth enhancing.

Common scenarios include:
- Reuploads and archives (older footage, screen recordings, or reposted clips)
- Uploads with low bitrate (especially during peak congestion or older encoding settings)
- Watch conditions that force YouTube to deliver reduced resolution (slower networks, aggressive data saver modes)
If you’re watching on a large display (1080p or 4K panels) or a high-DPI phone screen, the mismatch between your screen and the video’s source quality becomes more obvious—so enhancement features can feel noticeably better.
Where Super Resolution shows up (and who gets it)
YouTube typically introduces playback-quality features through staged rollouts. That means you might see Super Resolution on one device before another, or on Wi-Fi before cellular.
Look for it in the player’s settings/quality menu. Depending on the UI version, it may appear as:
- an additional toggle under Quality or Playback
- a label near the selected resolution (wording can differ)
- an automatic enhancement that doesn’t always present as a clearly named option
If you don’t see it, it may not be available for that specific account or device build yet. Don’t assume it’s absent on your whole account—verify in multiple videos with obvious compression/low resolution.

How to enable or turn off Super Resolution
Use the steps below to locate the setting. If the feature is present, it’s usually controlled from the video player.
Desktop (web browser)
- Open YouTube in a browser and start playing a video.
- Click Settings (gear icon) on the player.
- Select Quality (or Quality / Playback quality depending on UI).
- Check whether Super Resolution appears as an option or toggle.
- If it’s listed, turn it On to enable or Off to compare.
For best comparison, pause and toggle between Off/On while the same timestamp is visible. Use a segment with readable text (titles, captions, channel logos) and some motion (hands, scrolling, moving faces).
iPhone and iPad (YouTube app)
- Open the YouTube app and start playback.
- Tap the player to reveal controls.
- Tap the three-dot menu (or Settings if shown).
- Choose Quality or Playback.
- Look for a Super Resolution toggle and set it to On or Off.
If you don’t see the toggle, update the app to the latest available version and confirm whether “data saver” mode is active.
Android (YouTube app)
- Launch the YouTube app and play a video.
- Tap the screen to show controls.
- Tap More (three dots) or Settings.
- Select Quality.
- Find Super Resolution (if present) and toggle it On/Off.
On some Android builds, YouTube may hide enhancement toggles until you select a manual quality mode. If needed, switch from Auto to an explicit quality level and re-check the option list.

Smart TVs and streaming boxes
- Open the YouTube app on your TV/box and start a video.
- Open the Settings or Quality menu using your remote (often via a gear icon or on-screen menu button).
- Look for Super Resolution and toggle it if available.
- If you don’t see it, check whether the app is on an older version and update it from your platform’s app store.
TV apps can lag behind mobile/web for feature rollouts, so absence on day one doesn’t mean it’s never coming.
What to expect (and what it can’t fix)
Super Resolution can improve perceived clarity, but it can’t create true high-frequency detail when the input is severely degraded.
Where it tends to help:
- Compression softness where edges exist but look blurred
- Legible small text in talking-head videos (titles, subtitles, on-screen captions)
- Static or low-to-medium motion scenes
Where it may disappoint:
- Videos with heavy blocking/smudging where the original edges are missing
- Severe motion blur or shaky footage (AI can over-interpret)
- Low-light scenes with high noise (details may be “hallucinated” or look unnatural)
If you’re watching something that’s extremely low resolution (for example, a very compressed 360p-style upload) you’ll usually notice better sharpness around edges, but you shouldn’t expect the look of a clean 4K master.
Best use cases and practical examples
Super Resolution is most useful when you’re stuck with low-quality sources but still want a more watchable image.
Older uploads and reuploads
Many older videos are encoded differently than modern standards. If the image looks soft or blocky on a modern screen, Super Resolution can reduce the “mushy” look—especially on faces and printed text.
Podcasts, interviews, and talking heads
These videos often have consistent framing. You’ll typically see improved subtitle readability and more defined facial contours.
Gaming clips and screen recordings
UI text (health bars, menus) benefits when the source still contains structure. If the clip is extremely compressed, you might see slight stabilization of edges, but fast movement can still cause artifacts.
Live streams rebroadcast as VOD
Live-to-VOD can mean lower bitrate encodes. Super Resolution can make captions and lower-third graphics easier to read, though it won’t fully undo bandwidth-driven losses.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Quality control: how to judge improvements correctly
The easiest mistake is to judge enhancement using the “whole scene” impression. Instead, test in the parts that reveal whether the enhancement is real.
Do this:
- Pick a timestamp with small high-contrast text (channel overlays, subtitles, HUD elements).
- Use a brief loop (10–15 seconds) and toggle Super Resolution On vs Off.
- Check edges for crispness and check motion for smearing or haloing.
If text becomes easier to read without weird outlines around objects, the enhancement is doing its job. If you see shimmering or unnatural contours, keep it off for that content type.
Troubleshooting when Super Resolution doesn’t work
When something like Super Resolution doesn’t appear to work, it’s usually one of four things: rollout/visibility, app version, streaming quality mode, or device/browser limitations.

Feature isn’t visible
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm you’re on the latest YouTube app version (iOS/Android) or latest browser.
- Use a video that’s clearly low quality (older upload, obvious softness, readable artifacts).
- Turn off “data saver” or “download only” constraints if present.
- Switch network (Wi-Fi vs cellular) and retry. Some features roll out by connection type.
If it still doesn’t show, you’re likely not in the current rollout set for that device or region.

Quality doesn’t change
If toggling Super Resolution doesn’t feel different:
- Check that you’re actually playing a low-quality stream. Look at the quality indicator (for example, 360p/480p/720p).
- Force a lower manual quality (when available) and compare. If you’re already on a high-quality source (near-original resolution), Super Resolution may have little to do.
- Try another video with obvious compression artifacts.
Also remember: if the source already looks clean, the “enhancement” may be subtle.
Playback stutters or buffers
AI-enhancement can increase compute demands depending on device and how playback is handled.
- Switch to Wi-Fi if you’re on cellular.
- Set playback quality to Auto and see if the stutter improves.
- Restart the app/browser and try again.
- Lower the playback resolution (for example, pick 720p instead of 1080p) and keep Super Resolution On if you want the best balance.
If you consistently get buffering with Super Resolution on, you may prefer disabling it for that device/network.

Enhancement models can sometimes create unnatural edges, especially in noisy or fast-moving footage.
- Turn Super Resolution Off for that video type.
- Try a different manual playback quality level (sometimes 480p enhancement behaves differently than 720p enhancement).
- If you’re watching on a small-screen device, test on a different display—perceived artifacts can vary with scaling and sharpness settings.
Don’t force the feature if the improvement looks worse than the original.

Super Resolution isn’t the only way to improve perceived sharpness. Here’s how it stacks up against alternatives.
Browser or device upscaling
Many displays and GPUs upscale the image regardless (panel scaling, OS processing, hardware video decode). That’s generally a geometric resize plus mild filtering.
Super Resolution differs because it uses an AI reconstruction pass to enhance detail. That’s why text and edges can look more meaningful than plain scaling.
Third-party AI upscalers
Offline tools and paid upscalers can sometimes produce stronger results because they run more complex pipelines. The tradeoff is you usually need to reprocess the file and you lose the convenience of instant playback.

Changing YouTube’s playback quality
The most reliable way to improve clarity is still to stream a higher bitrate/resolution. Super Resolution helps when the stream is constrained or the source is low fidelity.

FAQs
Does YouTube Super Resolution work on every video?
No. Its impact depends on the source material and the available stream quality. You’ll see more benefit on videos with visible softness or compression artifacts.
Will Super Resolution use extra data?
It may not increase download size dramatically compared to switching playback quality, but it can change compute requirements. For network data usage, your dominant factor is still the chosen stream resolution/bitrate.
Is Super Resolution the same as 4K playback?
Not exactly. Super Resolution enhances what’s available from the stream, but it can’t replace a true high-bitrate master. If you have access to a high-quality encode, that’s still the best baseline.
Can I force Super Resolution to always be on?
If the setting exists in your player UI, you can toggle it. If YouTube doesn’t expose the option (rollout/availability), it may behave automatically or be controlled server-side for your device.
Does it affect subtitles or captions?
It can improve readability in many cases, especially when captions are small and the image is otherwise soft. However, caption rendering can vary by device, so test with a video that has clear on-screen text.
Bottom Line
YouTube Super Resolution is built for a specific pain point: low-quality videos that look bad on modern screens. When it’s available, it can make edges and text feel clearer without you having to hunt for a different upload.
To get the best results, toggle it off/on on a problematic video and judge readability and artifacting in motion-heavy moments. If it looks worse than the original, disable it for that content type and rely on higher playback quality when possible.
