Compare YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors with the server’s disk and inode usage, streaming-service logs, and system journal. Preserve useful evidence, free space safely, then restart or reconnect the encoder and confirm the stream is healthy in YouTube Live Control Room.
First confirm what stopped
Record the time the stream stopped, including the timezone. In YouTube Live Control Room, check whether the broadcast is marked ended or disconnected, or whether YouTube still appears to receive an encoder feed. Note any stream-health error and its timestamp: YouTube’s live streaming error guidance describes timestamped health information.

Then compare that timeline with the Linux host’s service logs and system journal. Look for failed writes, process termination, service restarts, and network disconnects around the same time. A stopped broadcast, by itself, does not establish that disk exhaustion was the only cause.
Check filesystem space and inodes
Run these commands on the server:
df -h
df -idf -h reports filesystem capacity in human-readable units; df -i reports inode usage. Inodes are the filesystem’s file-entry resources: a filesystem can run out of them even when it still has space for more bytes. The GNU df manual documents both reporting modes.

Check every filesystem that holds the streaming application’s logs, media, cache, temporary files, or service data—not just the root filesystem. If you know the relevant paths, use df -h /path and df -i /path to see which filesystem contains each one.
Find what is consuming the space
Use a shallow directory scan on the affected filesystem to locate likely sources. For GNU du, for example:
du -xhd1 /varReplace /var with the affected mount point or directory. The flags shown are not supported identically by every du implementation; consult the installed command’s help or manual and adjust as needed. The GNU du manual explains that du estimates usage by traversing directory trees. Treat the result as a locator, not a guaranteed match for df: the two commands account for files differently in some situations.

Inspect the directory that appears unusually large before removing anything. Determine whether it contains active media, application state, temporary data, or retained logs. Deleting a large file without identifying its purpose can remove stream data or erase evidence needed to diagnose the outage.
Inspect logs and the system journal before cleanup
Review the streaming service’s own logs and the system journal for the incident window. If you use OBS as the encoder, check its log as well; the title does not identify a particular streaming stack, and OBS-specific guidance only applies when OBS is in use.

journalctl --disk-usageJournal storage may be persistent under /var/log/journal or volatile under /run/log/journal, depending on the system’s configuration. See the journalctl manual and systemd-journald manual.
If the journal is large, preserve the entries you need for diagnosis before using supported rotation or vacuum controls. Vacuum operations remove archived journal files; the available retention and size limits depend on journald configuration. Journal cleanup may recover space, but it will not stop a service from generating excessive logs again.
Free space without creating another problem
- Retain relevant evidence. Save or inspect the service logs, OBS log if applicable, and journal entries around the stop time before removing logs or other files.
- Identify the source. Use
dfand a directory-levelduscan to narrow down whether blocks, inodes, logs, media, cache, or another directory are involved. - Choose a targeted cleanup. Remove only files you have identified as safe to remove. If the journal is the source, use its supported controls rather than deleting active journal files by hand.
- Confirm both resources are available again. Rerun
df -handdf -ion the affected filesystem. Check that the streaming service can write to its required paths. - Restore the stream using its actual setup. Check the service state, then restart or reconnect the encoder according to how that service is managed. There is no single restart command or recovery behavior that applies to every server and encoder.
- Verify ingest. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream and check that the relevant health indicators clear in Live Control Room.
Rule out a connection problem as well
Disk pressure is one plausible cause, not proof of the cause. OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections can indicate an unstable connection between the computer and the remote ingest server. Compare any such symptoms and OBS log entries with YouTube’s timestamped health errors before attributing the stop to a full filesystem. See OBS connection troubleshooting; its advice is relevant only if OBS is the encoder you use.

If df reports a full filesystem but du does not show a clear culprit, that discrepancy needs further investigation. Possible diagnostic leads include open-but-deleted files, mount boundaries, permissions, reserved filesystem space, and filesystem-specific behavior; none is established as the cause in your incident. Avoid deleting additional files at random.
Prevent the next disk-full interruption
Set retention for the service generating the data
Once you identify a growing log or other recurring output, configure an appropriate retention policy for the responsible service. logrotate supports time- or size-based rotation, compression, and removal according to its configuration; see the logrotate manual. Choose limits that retain enough operational history without allowing logs to grow without bound.

Monitor both filesystem capacity and inode use. A bytes-only alert can miss inode exhaustion, while a check of only / can miss a separate filesystem containing logs or stream data. Include the mount points used by the streaming service and investigate unusual growth before the stream is affected.

Expand storage only when the cause supports it
A larger volume may be appropriate if you have confirmed that normal retained data exceeds the available capacity and the server can be expanded. It is not a universal fix: a runaway log, inode exhaustion, or unrelated connection failure calls for a different remedy. Identify the cause and server type before changing storage.
