A stream that ends in Studio needs a different diagnosis from a stream that remains live but buffers for viewers. Without the status message, encoder details and upload measurements, there is no reliable way to identify the cause in advance.
First, find out what “stopping” means
Check whether YouTube Studio shows the broadcast as ended or whether it is still live while viewers experience buffering or a frozen picture. In the stream dashboard in Live Control Room, inspect Stream health/status. Copy the exact message and note its timestamp before changing settings. YouTube says the dashboard displays status messages and instructions; an error may remain while its underlying cause persists.
Use that message to choose the next check rather than changing the bitrate or key at random. Keep a simple record of the status, encoder output, CPU load and upload conditions around each interruption. If you can compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi or test another encoder, change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the failure recurs.
Fix the cause indicated by the status
Encoder cannot start, or YouTube reports a key or authorization problem
- Open the stream setup in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and verify the stream URL and stream key against the values entered in your encoder.
- If you reset the key, replace the old value in the encoder with the current one, then try connecting again.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance directs creators to retrieve the key in Live Control Room and enter it in the third-party encoder.

Encoder output is faulty, or the broadcast fails while encoding
- Update the encoder software to its latest available version.
- Inspect the encoder preview or output and check both picture and sound. If the output is already corrupted, missing or silent before it reaches YouTube, investigate the source input and encoder workload rather than the network first.
- Check CPU load while streaming. If it is heavily loaded, reduce the workload or choose an output setting the system can sustain, then test again.
- Review a local recording if you have one; it can help distinguish a source or encoding fault from a delivery problem.
- If these checks do not reveal the issue, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder.
If the encoded output looks healthy, move on to the outbound connection.
Feed drops or viewers buffer: test upload capacity and stability
For a live broadcast, the relevant network direction is upload: that is the data your setup sends to YouTube. YouTube says available upload bandwidth should exceed the total streaming bitrate and recommends keeping 20% headroom. Its guidance also warns that other people sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream, and that a connectivity disruption can break the feed (YouTube streaming tips).

- Measure upload performance and stability during the time of day when interruptions usually happen, not only under different conditions.
- Compare available upload capacity with the encoder’s total stream bitrate. Leave the recommended headroom rather than planning to use the entire connection.
- Check whether other devices or people are using the same connection and whether the problem coincides with that usage.
- If you currently use Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet as a comparison. It is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
YouTube Help’s cited guidance does not display a publication year for the 20% recommendation. A speed result from one moment also cannot establish that the connection stayed stable throughout a later stream.
Check format and channel-limit errors before changing settings
Use the exact Live Control Room message to check YouTube’s list of live-streaming errors. It documents, among other cases, a daily live-stream limit and an incorrect-format error. For the documented incorrect-format case, YouTube specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. Treat these as fixes only when the corresponding error applies; they are not a diagnosis for every interrupted stream.

Choose settings your connection can sustain
A higher resolution is not automatically more reliable. YouTube recommends selecting a quality level the connection can maintain, testing before going live and watching stream health and messages during the broadcast. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the resolution, frame rate and codec you use; the official table is the right reference for exact ranges because recommendations can change.
- Identify the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate configured in the encoder.
- Compare that total bitrate with stable available upload capacity, keeping YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- If the connection cannot sustain the current output, test a lower quality setting before the next long broadcast.
- Test the setup before going live, then monitor Stream health and its messages while broadcasting.
Do not infer a target bitrate from download speed or choose the highest setting simply because the encoder offers it.

Separate a missing archive from a live interruption
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee an archive for a stream longer than 12 hours, and an archive issue by itself does not explain why a live feed ended. If the broadcast stayed live but its recording is missing, investigate that as a separate archive question rather than treating it as the cause of the interruption.
When the stream is still going but keeps buffering
If Live Control Room still shows the stream as live, focus on the outgoing feed and delivery conditions instead of assuming YouTube ended the broadcast. Compare the status message and timestamp with encoder output and CPU load, then check upload stability and the configured bitrate against available upload capacity. This helps distinguish an encoder problem from a connection problem; the supplied facts alone cannot establish which applies to a particular channel.

No. The error, encoder output and upload conditions are needed to narrow it down; the same symptom can have different causes.
