A freeze when a playlist returns to a large video does not, by itself, show that the file is too large or that YouTube is at fault. Find where the freeze first appears: in the source or local playback, in the encoder output or archive, or only on YouTube. That comparison narrows the cause before you change settings.
First, identify where the freeze begins
At the next repeat boundary, note the time and compare three views: the file playing locally, the encoder preview or local recording, and the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking the local archive; its live-stream troubleshooting guidance also points to encoder errors, CPU load, archive problems, and the outbound connection as useful checks.

- The file or local player freezes: investigate the media file, playback software, and the transition at the end of the file.
- The local playback is fine but the encoder preview or archive freezes: focus on the source configuration and the computer’s available resources.
- The local output remains healthy but YouTube viewers see a freeze: inspect YouTube’s health messages and the outbound connection to YouTube ingest.
Check whether the local archive is still growing and whether it contains the same freeze. A timestamped health error or a freeze in the archive can help distinguish a local production problem from a delivery problem. See YouTube’s guidance on monitoring stream quality and checking live-stream archive integrity.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
For a Media Source
Open the source’s properties and check its per-file Loop option. A Media Source is configured around an individual media file; confirm that the intended file is set to loop and that playback reaches its end and restarts in a local test.
For a VLC Video source
Check the playlist and its Loop Playlist option. OBS notes that VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. Test the playlist through the transition back to the large file rather than assuming the loop works because the first playback succeeds.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
OBS documents the source options in its Media Sources guide. If the file plays properly on its own but not when the playlist returns to it, the repeat transition is an important clue; it does not establish the cause on its own.

High-resolution media and complex scenes can demand more resources. OBS recommends simplifying scenes or using lower-resolution media when performance is a problem. Treat these as controlled diagnostic tests, not as proof that a large file necessarily causes a freeze.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Save your current OBS configuration so you can restore it.
- Temporarily simplify the scene, keeping the playlist and other relevant settings unchanged.
- Run through a repeat boundary and observe the preview and local archive.
- If the problem persists, test a lower-resolution copy of the same video while holding other variables constant.
- Change one variable at a time and compare the result. If a test makes no difference, restore the original setting before trying another.
OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guide explains that scene complexity and high-resolution media can affect resource demand. These tests can help isolate that possibility; they are not a universal fix.
Test hardware decoding only as a controlled change
OBS Media Source includes a hardware-decoding option, but OBS does not document it as a fix for every playback freeze. If practical, test the current setting against the opposite setting while preserving the original configuration. Retest the same repeat boundary, and avoid changing decoding, media resolution, and scene complexity all at once; otherwise it will be difficult to know which change mattered.

If local output is healthy, investigate YouTube delivery
When the encoder preview and archive remain smooth but the YouTube stream freezes, review the Live Control Room health indicator and any timestamped errors. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, reviewing the local archive, and testing the outbound connection. If encoder output looks healthy, the outbound internet connection is one possible cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not infer an ingest fault from the viewer-facing symptom alone. Compare the local recording at the same timestamp with the YouTube playback and health messages; the first point where they differ helps direct the next check.

Verify encoder settings and test a complete repeat
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and advises not exceeding four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose a setting appropriate to your stream and available upload connection rather than applying a single bitrate to every setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings and its live encoder troubleshooting guidance.
- Use the encoder configuration appropriate to your codec, resolution, and frame rate; check that the keyframe interval is two seconds and does not exceed four.
- Run a private or unlisted test with representative content and the same playlist and source type.
- Keep the test running until the playlist completes and returns to the large file at least once.
- At the boundary, compare the encoder preview, archive, YouTube playback, and Live Control Room health messages.
A test that ends before the playlist repeats cannot tell you whether the repeat-boundary issue is resolved. Recheck current YouTube recommendations and the controls in your installed OBS version, since software interfaces and platform guidance can change.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| Symptom | Next check |
|---|---|
| The file freezes or fails to restart in a local player | Test the file through its end and restart; focus on the media and local playback before changing the streaming setup. |
| Only the playlist transition fails in OBS | Confirm whether the source is Media Source or VLC Video and check that source type’s loop behavior. |
| The freeze appears in OBS preview or the local archive | Check source settings and CPU load; simplify the scene or test lower-resolution media one change at a time. |
| The local archive is smooth but YouTube playback freezes | Review Live Control Room health messages and test the outbound connection. |
| The test stream looks fine but the fault returns later | Run the test for at least one complete playlist repeat and inspect the archive at the boundary. |
None of these symptoms alone identifies a cause. A specific diagnosis depends on details such as source type, OBS and operating-system versions, file codec and resolution, machine workload, and the relevant logs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer and local encoder running for a YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a cloud service for playing uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
