Can you play Indian regional music on a 24/7 YouTube livestream? Only if you have the rights needed for the actual songs and recordings, the planned live use, any replay, and the relevant territories. Owning a music file—or having a licence for a different use—is not enough to establish that. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, and an otherwise licensed stream may still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID.
Which rights do you need for regional music?
A song recording can involve more than one protected work. IP India distinguishes musical works from sound recordings and identifies roles such as lyricist, composer, singer, musician, and sound-recording producer among potential right holders. The people or companies with authority over a particular track depend on its ownership and contracts, so a song title or language does not tell you who can grant permission.

| What you plan to use | What to establish |
|---|---|
| The underlying musical work, such as the composition and lyrics | Who controls or may license the relevant rights for your intended use. A recording licence alone should not be assumed to clear the underlying work. |
| A specific sound recording | Who controls or may license that recording. A permission covering one version does not automatically establish permission for a remix, live-performance recording, or another version. |
| Contributions by performers and other participants | Whether the rights and permissions applicable to the actual recording and use have been addressed. The relevant participants depend on the work and agreements. |
This is a practical rights-clearance overview, not a determination of rights in any named track or legal advice about a particular licence. IP India’s copyright explanations describe a bundle that can include reproduction and communication to the public, among other rights; they do not identify who owns a particular recording.
What YouTube requires for a live stream
YouTube’s livestream terms say providers represent and warrant that they have the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licences), and other royalty participants. Check the territory in each permission against that worldwide requirement; a permission that is limited to India may not cover the use contemplated by those terms.

YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If the system finds a match that is not resolved, YouTube may issue a warning, replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. A licence does not necessarily prevent those platform actions: YouTube advises licensed creators to ask the owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist, and warns that a stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting, even if it is restricted to territories where the creator has rights.
Clear every track before scheduling the channel
- Inventory the exact material. List every track and the precise recording/version you plan to use, including remixes, live recordings, compilation tracks, and transition audio. Keep the title, version, and source together; a title alone is not a record of ownership.
- Identify the relevant rights holders or authorized representatives. Establish who can grant permission for the musical work and the specific sound recording, and account for relevant performer rights. IP India’s general explanations identify potential participant roles but do not establish the rights chain for your chosen tracks.
- Get written permission for the actual plan. Ask for permission covering YouTube livestreaming, the territories, planned duration, monetization if applicable, and any replay or archive. Review the grant itself rather than relying on a label such as “public performance” or “online use.” YouTube’s terms call for worldwide rights; confirm that the permission’s territory and scope meet your intended use.
- Request Content ID allowlisting. Ask the relevant rights holder to allowlist your YouTube channel before going live. Keep the written permission and the owner’s allowlist confirmation. Allowlisting helps address matching, but it is separate from the underlying permission and should not be treated as a replacement for it.
- Test and monitor. Test the planned stream with cleared material and monitor YouTube Studio while it is live. If YouTube reports a match or warning, identify the material and follow the platform’s reported process; do not assume your licence will automatically override a match.
- Decide how you will preserve a replay. Confirm that the rights cover the archive or replay as well as the live broadcast. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy, and do not promise viewers that YouTube will save a complete 24/7 stream.
Why a 24/7 stream has an archive problem
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, so its full recording may not be available as a YouTube replay. YouTube also says Content ID claims on an archived live stream are made after the stream is complete, if it is archived. Treat the live broadcast and any saved replay as separate uses to clear, and make a local recording if a replay is important.
Indian permissions, global audiences, and exceptions
Indian copyright rules provide important context for the different rights in a work and a recording, but the official explanations do not establish whether a particular Indian licence covers a particular YouTube live stream, its replay, worldwide access, or monetization. Do not assume that a licence for music played at a local venue authorizes a global online livestream. Read the licence and confirm its scope with the rights holder or qualified Indian copyright counsel.
YouTube’s general copyright guidance notes that copyright exceptions differ by country. Its fair-use explanation is US-specific; do not treat it as an Indian fair-use rule. A belief that a use is an exception, or the availability of permission, Creative Commons, or YouTube music resources, does not itself guarantee that YouTube will avoid a claim or strike. For a track-specific conclusion, get advice based on the applicable law and the actual rights documents.

What to do if YouTube reports a copyright issue
First identify whether YouTube has reported a Content ID claim, a copyright removal request, or a strike. They are not interchangeable, and a Content ID claim is not by itself a ruling by YouTube on who owns the rights. YouTube says it does not resolve ownership disputes.
- For a live match or interruption: identify the matched content and address it in the live stream. If you have permission, verify that it covers the exact recording and use, then follow up with the rights holder about the channel allowlist.
- For a claim on an archive: check which segment and recording are identified and whether your permission expressly covers that replay. YouTube says archive claims are made after the live stream ends, if it is archived.
- For a takedown or strike: follow the specific notice and applicable YouTube process. Dispute only if you have a substantiated rights basis. YouTube’s account guidance says strikes on active or archived livestreams may disable live access, and three strikes make a channel subject to termination.
Keeping a cleared stream online without leaving a computer on
Copyright clearance and streaming continuity are separate problems: a cloud service cannot grant music rights or guarantee that YouTube will accept a stream. Once your material is cleared, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the stream running without a home computer or connection staying on. It offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. A slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots; plans differ by billing duration. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo does not clear music rights: obtain the permissions and any Content ID allowlisting independently. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
