Treat them as content, not decoration. Google can find and understand images through crawlable HTML, alt text, and the text around them, and the same descriptions serve people who use screen readers or slow connections. No single tweak guarantees rankings or traffic. The work is making each image discoverable, described for its purpose, and placed in context.
Make sure Google can actually find your images
Google’s Image SEO Best Practices says it can discover images in the src attribute of HTML img elements, including those inside a picture element. It also says it does not index CSS background images. If an image carries meaning, such as a product photo, a diagram, or a news photo, put it in the markup as an image element, not in a stylesheet.

Formats
Google lists BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF as supported when referenced in an img element’s src. The documentation does not say any of them ranks better than the others. Pick a format for quality and file size, and keep the file extension consistent with the actual image type.

Write alt text for the image’s job
Google Search Central states: “The most important attribute when it comes to providing more metadata for an image is the alt text (text that describes an image), which also improves accessibility for people who can’t see images on web pages, including users who use screen readers or have low-bandwidth connections.” Google says it uses alt text together with computer vision and page content. So describe the image in context and don’t stuff it with keywords.
W3C WAI’s Images Tutorial and its H37 technique show that the right alternative depends on the image’s purpose. One formula for every image does not work.

Put images next to the text that explains them
Google’s SEO Starter Guide says relevant text near an image helps it understand the subject and context. Place each image beside the paragraph, caption, or heading it illustrates, and choose images that fit the page’s topic.
Filenames: housekeeping, not a lever
Google calls filenames a “very light” clue. Naming a file espresso-machine-front.jpg instead of IMG_4471.jpg costs little and keeps your media library tidy. It won’t make up for missing alt text or poor page context.

Add structured data and metadata only where it applies
Structured data can support certain image search enhancements when the relevant eligibility rules are met. For rights, Google’s Image Metadata documentation says license and credit details can be supplied through structured data or embedded IPTC photo metadata. This matters mainly for photographers, publishers, and stores that license images. If you have no such use case, skip it.
A practical audit, in order
- List your important images and sort them as informative, linked, decorative, or complex.
- Confirm each meaningful image is an HTML
imgelement (or insidepicture), not a CSS background. - For essential images that are hard to discover, add an image sitemap.
- Rewrite alt text by purpose. Remove keyword lists, set decorative images to
alt="", and describe the destination for image-only links. - Give charts and diagrams a full text equivalent on the page.
- Move images next to the copy that explains them.
- Rename files descriptively where it’s easy, and check that extensions match the real format.
- Add structured data or IPTC metadata only if a relevant feature or licensing need applies, and follow that feature’s requirements.
What the evidence does and doesn’t show
Google’s and W3C’s guidance describes recommended practices and supported formats. Neither publishes a measured traffic or ranking gain for any one change, and this article doesn’t claim one. The reliable payoff is a site where search engines and people using assistive technology can both understand every image that matters.
