Yes—your phone may be able to improve a crooked, cramped, or poorly composed photo after you take it. Start with crop, straighten, and perspective controls, which adjust the existing image. For a wider frame or a different apparent viewpoint, AI tools can generate pixels beyond what the camera captured. Those additions may look convincing, but they are synthetic—not recovered details from outside the frame.
Choose the fix that matches the problem

Reframe a photo in Google Photos on Android
- Open the photo in Google Photos and tap Edit > Crop.
- For a simple correction, use the crop, straighten, rotate, perspective, aspect ratio, or mirror controls. Google describes Perspective as adjusting angle and depth.
- For a cramped or poorly composed image, choose Auto frame. Google says it can recompose a photo or extend its background, filling or expanding image areas with AI.
- Review the result, tap the checkmark, then tap Save.
Google documents these controls in its Google Photos editing guide for Android. Feature availability can vary by device, so the presence of Google Photos alone does not guarantee every editing control will appear.

What AI reframing does—and does not do
Google Research’s April 22, 2026 explanation of Auto frame describes a two-stage process: the system estimates the scene’s 3D layout and camera, renders the image from changed camera parameters, then uses generative inpainting to fill areas that the original view did not show. In the authors’ words, it uses machine-learning models to understand spatial layout and generative AI to imagine the photo from a new perspective. That can make a composition feel less cramped, but it cannot establish what was actually beyond the captured edges.

Expansion and viewpoint changes ask the software to invent more than a basic crop does. Inspect newly generated edges and details for odd textures, warped lines, or objects that do not belong. Keep the original, or use undo or reset if the edit is unsuitable. Samsung also warns that unintended objects may appear in generated results.

Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s support instructions describe the workflow as Gallery > Edit > Generative edit. The tool can reposition or resize selected objects, adjust tilt, and fill empty space when you zoom out past the image border. Samsung’s page, updated January 14, 2026, lists supported Galaxy devices; eligibility can change, so check the current Samsung support page for your model.
Apple iPhone
Apple’s iOS 27 Photos guide describes Extend for expanding photo edges and Reframe for adjusting perspective or the apparent point of capture. Apple says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. Some features vary by language and region, and usage limits may apply; check Apple’s current iPhone photo editing guide and device eligibility before relying on the feature.

A practical way to decide
- Use crop or straighten when the existing pixels are enough to fix the composition.
- Try perspective for a skewed subject, but check whether your editor offers it.
- Use generative reframing or extension only when you are comfortable with invented image content.
- Before editing, check your phone model, operating system, app version, language, and region; these can affect access to AI tools.
