You cannot erase your personal information from the internet in one step, but you can shrink where it appears and keep it from surfacing in search results. Five practical paths do most of the work: find the exposure, remove or limit what you control, opt out of people-search sites, use California’s DROP system if you live in California, and ask Google to remove qualifying results from Search. Each path works on a different layer, and success on one does not automatically clear the others.
Why one deletion never finishes the job
Much of the personal information you see about yourself online is not published by the person it describes. Data brokers and people-search sites compile profiles from other brokers, public social media profiles, and government public records. Deleting a listing from one site does not stop another broker from assembling the same details again, so the work is ongoing rather than a single cleanup.

1. Find where your information appears
You cannot remove what you have not located. Start with a documented inventory.

- Check image results separately. Photos can appear with captions or location details that text searches miss.
- For every hit, save the exact page URL and note what is exposed: address, phone number, relatives, employer, age, or a photo.
- Mark each entry as one you control (your own profile or post) or one you do not (a broker listing, a news archive, someone else’s page).
People-search reports often combine several sources, so a single listing may contain details you never published. Keep the spreadsheet; you will need it for every later step and for re-checks.
#1 Best Overall
- SHIELD YOUR PRIVACY WITH THE ID DEFENDER ROLLER STAMP: Tired of worrying about your personal information falling into the wrong hands? The ID Defender Roller Stamp offers a simple yet effective solution. With a unique wide camouflage pattern, it quickly and easily conceals sensitive data on a variety of surfaces.
- PRIVACY PROTECTION: useful not only as an ADDRESS BLOCKER or ID POLICE, but also keeps away preying eyes from invoices, authority documents, checks, bank statements and many more.
- SIMPLE TO USE: Just remove the cover and swipe. The wide swipe makes it easy to cover sensitive information.
- VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.
- LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
2. Remove or limit what you control
Start with accounts and posts that you own. Close old accounts you no longer use, and edit public profiles to remove contact details, workplace or school history, and location tags. Where a service does not offer deletion, switching a profile to private is often the next best limit.
Deletion controls differ between services and change over time, so check each platform’s current help pages before acting. This guide does not list platform-by-platform steps because those screens and menus are not verified here.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
3. Opt out of people-search sites
Most people-search sites run their own opt-out process, usually a removal form that asks for the profile URL and an email address for confirmation. Use that process rather than contacting the site by general email.
If you cannot find the opt-out link, the Federal Trade Commission advises searching the site’s name together with “opt out” or “remove my information.” Record the date you submitted each request and the confirmation you received. Listings can reappear after a broker re-collects public records, so check your inventory again after a few months.

4. Use California’s DROP system if you live in California
DROP, run by the California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy), lets a California resident submit one deletion request that is sent to registered data brokers, instead of contacting each broker separately. The platform verifies California residency before a request goes out, and it concerns non-exempt personal information only.
CalPrivacy’s July 2026 explainer says DROP covers more than 600 active data brokers. That is the agency’s stated coverage figure. It is not a count of matched records or completed deletions, and it does not mean every broker will find or delete your information.

5. Request removal from Google Search
Google accepts requests to remove some personally identifiable information from Search results. You supply the URLs of the pages that contain the information, and Google reviews whether the request qualifies. Removal affects what appears in Google Search; it is a separate action from removing the page itself.
Google’s Search Help documentation states it plainly: “Even if Google removes something from Google Search, it might still be on the internet.” When the goal is to take information down entirely, contact the website that hosts the page as well.
What these steps cannot guarantee
- A “deleted” or “opted-out” status from one broker is not proof that every copy of your information has vanished from the internet.
- Brokers may lawfully keep information that falls under an exemption, and DROP reports those exemptions as they occur.
- Removed information can reappear if a broker re-collects it from public records or other sources.
- Search removal does not change the original page, and source-site removal does not guarantee that a search engine drops its cached copy immediately.
Paid removal services: when they fit
Some companies sell services that send removal requests to data brokers on your behalf. These can save time if you have many listings to manage, but they are a convenience layered on top of the free routes above, not a complete erasure solution. Public records and social media content are often outside what they can remove.
