Streaming rights, subscription inclusion, platform names and rental or purchase prices can change, so verify the title’s current listing before subscribing or buying.

1. Monster: The Ed Gein Story — Netflix
Best for: Viewers who want dark true-crime-inspired horror.
#1 Best Overall

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Netflix’s third Monster installment dramatizes the life and crimes of Ed Gein, the Wisconsin murderer and grave robber whose case helped inspire fictional horror figures associated with Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. Charlie Hunnam plays Gein, while Laurie Metcalf portrays his mother. Netflix identified the season as an eight-episode 2025 release arriving October 3 in its official trailer and Tudum materials.
This is a scripted dramatization inspired by real events, not a documentary or a definitive historical record. That distinction matters: the series is designed as a piece of crime drama and horror, so viewers looking for strictly documented history should choose a nonfiction production instead.
2. Chad Powers — Hulu
Best for: Sports-comedy fans and viewers who enjoy identity-switch premises.
Glen Powell stars as Russ Holliday, a disgraced college quarterback who disguises himself and attempts to re-enter the football world as the supposedly new player Chad Powers. Powell and Michael Waldron created the series, with Peyton and Eli Manning among the executive producers. Hulu’s press information lists the season 1 premiere as September 30, 2025, which made episodes 1 and 2 the relevant weekend catch-up option.
The appeal is straightforward: it combines football culture, a broad undercover gag and a redemption story. It is the list’s clearest choice for an easy, conventional comedy rather than a heavy drama.
3. Abbott Elementary season 5 — ABC and Hulu
Best for: Viewers who want a warm workplace comedy with an established ensemble.
Quinta Brunson’s Philadelphia public-school comedy returned for season 5 with its familiar ensemble, including Tyler James Williams, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The season premiere first aired on ABC, with Hulu serving as a catch-up destination; ABC’s official show page confirms the season and Hulu availability associated with the series.
Unlike the brand-new launches on this list, this is a returning-season recommendation. Start here if you already know the teachers and staff, or if you want a low-stakes comedy after a darker movie or thriller.

4. Love Is Blind season 9 — Netflix
Best for: Reality-TV viewers who prefer relationship experiments and social drama.
Season 9 moves Netflix’s dating experiment to Denver. Contestants build relationships without seeing one another, then face engagements, cohabitation and the pressures of deciding whether a relationship can work outside the pods. Netflix’s Tudum coverage documents the season’s 2025 rollout and later finale and reunion coverage.
Episodes 1–6 were the available batch during the October 3–5 weekend. This is the pick for viewers who want cliffhangers, arguments and relationship speculation rather than a scripted narrative.

Best for: Families looking for an animated literary adaptation, subject to age-rating and current catalog checks.
This three-part animated miniseries adapts E. B. White’s classic story about Charlotte and Wilbur. Amy Adams voices Charlotte and Elijah Wood voices the adult Wilbur. The underlying book remains the source material: Penguin Random House identifies Charlotte’s Web as E. B. White’s classic children’s book.
Check the current Max listing and local availability before planning a family viewing session. Platform branding and catalog placement can change, and a child’s age and sensitivity to peril or loss should guide the decision more than the “family” label alone.
Read-along option: Families who want the literary source can also read Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. The book is a companion to the miniseries, not the same work.

6. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale — premium video on demand
Best for: Fans of the Crawley family and viewers who want a polished period-drama finale.
Rank #3
- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
The third Downton Abbey film concludes the franchise with the Crawleys facing financial pressure, scandal and the changing social order of the 1930s. The October 2025 weekend roundup placed it among the digital purchase options on Amazon and Apple. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced digital rental and purchase availability beginning September 30, 2025, followed by 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases on November 11, 2025.
This was a premium digital purchase rather than a title included automatically with a general streaming subscription. If you are new to the franchise, watching the earlier films—or the series itself—will provide more context than treating this as a standalone movie.
Own it: The later disc release makes this the list’s clearest physical-media choice. Look for the Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale DVD, Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD edition if you prefer repeat viewing and collection ownership. The disc is an ownership option, not a requirement for watching the digital release.

7. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues — premium video on demand
Best for: Fans of mockumentaries, absurd rock-star egos and sequel comedy.
David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls return for another mock-rock farewell adventure, with Rob Reiner again directing and appearing as documentarian Marty DiBergi. It is positioned as a premium digital purchase, so availability and pricing should be checked on the relevant video store.
The natural way to watch it is as a double feature with the original This Is Spinal Tap. Amazon’s official editorial coverage connects the sequel with the original film on Prime Video, but the exact rental, purchase and physical-edition options can vary.
Franchise catch-up: If you have not seen the first film, begin with This Is Spinal Tap before moving on to the sequel. Verify the edition and current purchase or rental terms before checkout.
8. Play Dirty — Prime Video
Best for: Viewers who want a straightforward crime-heist movie.
Rank #4

Mark Wahlberg plays Parker, an antihero drawn from the crime novels written by Donald E. Westlake under the pen name Richard Stark. The film follows Parker into a heist story and supplies the list’s most direct action-oriented option.
The October 2025 roundup presented Play Dirty as a Prime Video selection. Because inclusion in a subscription catalog can change, confirm whether it is still included with Prime in your region or has moved to a rental or purchase tier.
9. The Lost Bus — Apple TV+
Best for: Viewers seeking a tense survival drama with real-world inspiration.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, The Lost Bus is based on the 2018 Camp Fire in California. Matthew McConaughey plays bus driver Kevin McKay, who tries to evacuate children and their teacher as the wildfire advances; America Ferrera is also among the leading cast. Apple’s official press materials identify the film, director and principal stars.
The premise makes this a more intense choice than a casual family adventure. It is also rooted in a real disaster, so viewers who find wildfire or child-endangerment stories distressing may want to choose something lighter.
10. Steve — Netflix
Best for: Viewers who prefer intimate character drama to spectacle.
Steve unfolds over one difficult day at a reform school. Cillian Murphy plays the headteacher, while Jay Lycurgo plays a troubled student at the center of the story. The film’s contained institutional setting and focus on pressure, responsibility and human behavior distinguish it from the weekend’s larger franchise and action offerings.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
11. Bring Her Back — Max
Best for: Supernatural-horror fans who want a sinister foster-home story.
After their father’s death, step-siblings Andy and Piper are placed with a foster mother whose intentions become increasingly disturbing. Sally Hawkins plays Laura, the foster mother, in the list’s most direct supernatural-horror recommendation.
As with the other Max selection, verify the current platform listing before watching: the original weekend article used the HBO Max-era label, while service branding and catalog availability are date-sensitive. The film also deals with bereavement, children and threatening family dynamics, so it is a poor choice for viewers looking for gentle horror.

| Prestige or emotional drama | The Lost Bus, Steve or Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale | Pick survival tension, contained character drama or a period-franchise conclusion. |
| Action and heists | Play Dirty | It is the roundup’s clearest crime-action choice. |
What “new” means in this list
The original October roundup used “new” broadly. It combined brand-new series and films with a returning season of Abbott Elementary, a new batch of Love Is Blind episodes, a franchise finale, a sequel and movies moving into digital home viewing after theatrical or earlier release windows. That makes the list more useful as a weekend watch guide than as a strict list of premieres.
For a current version of this guide, recheck every platform and purchase listing—especially Max, Prime Video and premium digital stores. The release dates themselves are more durable: Monster: The Ed Gein Story arrived October 3, 2025; Chad Powers premiered September 30; Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale reached digital purchase and rental on September 30; and its announced 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release followed on November 11.
