If a new 144Hz monitor is showing 60Hz, first check Windows’ active refresh rate for that specific display. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and choose the intended rate if it appears. If it does not, the limit may be the resolution or any part of the connection path—not necessarily the monitor or cable.
Check the refresh rate Windows is actually using
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If more than one display is connected, select the new monitor in the display selector.
- Check its active resolution and refresh rate. Open the refresh-rate menu and select the desired rate if available.
Windows lists rates supported by the connected display path. Microsoft notes that rates marked with an asterisk do not support the current resolution; selecting one changes the resolution. So the largest number in the menu is not necessarily available at the monitor’s native resolution. Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions explain the per-display setting and resolution interaction.

If the rate is missing, check the whole connection path
A usable mode depends on the capabilities of the monitor, the specific GPU output, the monitor input, the cable, and any adapter or dock between them. Check the monitor and graphics hardware manuals for the maximum resolution and refresh rate supported by the exact ports in use. A monitor can support different modes on different inputs, and a connector’s name alone does not establish that it can carry a particular mode.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAlso account for color depth and HDR, USB-C alternate-mode capability, and any conversion adapter or dock. When comparing two possible hookups, compare the target resolution and rate against both endpoint ports and every device in between.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Try these free isolation steps before buying anything
- Reseat the cable at both ends.
- Temporarily remove docks, dongles, and adapters, then connect the monitor directly to the computer if possible.
- Try another graphics output and, if available, another suitable cable.
- Connect the monitor to another system to see whether the problem follows the monitor or stays with the original PC.
Microsoft recommends checking connections and accessories when troubleshooting external displays. Its external-monitor troubleshooting guide covers connection checks; its USB-C guidance addresses port and accessory issues. A dock or adapter can reduce the modes the full path supports, so test it separately rather than assuming the monitor is faulty.
Match the cable to the mode, not just the connector
Do not assume every setup needs the newest or most expensive cable, or that HDMI is inherently slower than DisplayPort. The required cable depends on the source and display capabilities and the exact mode you want. Verify the supported resolution and refresh rate at each end, then check that the cable and any conversion hardware support that link.

- Incredible Images: The Acer KB272 G0bi 27" monitor with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail.
- Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
- Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting. A 120Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver smooth 2D motion scenes in gaming and video.

For context, VESA says DisplayPort 2.1b enables a maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps and gives example configurations, including one 8K (7680 × 4320) display at 60 Hz with 30 bits per pixel and 4:4:4 color using HDR-10. Those are standard capabilities, not a promise that every DP 2.1b device supports every configuration. For compatible GPU and monitor combinations seeking full UHBR20 performance, VESA recommends looking for VESA-certified DP80 cables. See VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ.

It calls for Ultra High Speed HDMI or Ultra96 HDMI cables for performance and compatibility with the modes covered by that specification. Check Dynamic Refresh Rate if a game seems capped
Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) adjusts refresh rate based on activity and appears only when supported by the hardware. Microsoft says DRR requires a compatible display with variable refresh rate (VRR) and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz; it also warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. If Windows shows the expected rate but a game seems lower, test with DRR off and inspect the game’s own display settings. Microsoft explains the feature and requirements in its Dynamic Refresh Rate guidance.

If the intended rate is still missing at a resolution the monitor supports, after a direct connection and checks with an appropriate cable and output, investigate the specific GPU output, monitor input, and any remaining adapter or dock limitations. The likely cause cannot be narrowed down without the model numbers, target resolution and rate, and the complete connection chain.
