Your Driverless Cab Is Spying on You—Here’s What It Can Record

Driverless cabs can collect cabin or road imagery, sensor data and trip information. Here is what Waymo, Uber and Tesla say they record—and what riders can control.

A driverless cab can collect much more than a dashcam clip. Waymo describes interior and exterior cameras, microphones in limited circumstances, and records tied to a trip. Uber describes outward-facing camera, lidar and radar data, plus location and time information. Tesla’s Robotaxi notice covers exterior- and cabin-camera analytics and sound detection. These systems can record information associated with a ride, but the operators describe defined safety, support, operations and system-improvement purposes—not a general program of identifying or profiling passengers.

What “spying” gets right—and what it overstates

The privacy concern is real: a robotaxi can sense its surroundings, and an operator may associate sensor data with trip or device-location records. But five separate questions matter: what the vehicle collects, how software processes it, whether a person reviews it, how long it is kept, and when it may be shared. A statement that a vehicle has cameras does not by itself establish that every ride is watched live, that every recording is retained indefinitely, or that passengers are identified by face.

The notices described here give different levels of detail, and they cover different systems. They do not provide comparable figures for how frequently recordings are made or how many rides are reviewed. The specific practices below should be read as each operator’s stated policy, not as a claim that every robotaxi company works the same way.

What can each operator collect?

Operator and source Sensor or data described Stated purpose and limits
Waymo — Waymo Help and Waymo Privacy Policy Interior and exterior cameras; interior microphones; exterior audio detection; pickup and drop-off locations, route and device-location information during trips; video and audio information may be processed. Interior cameras can support cleanliness checks, lost-item recovery, emergency response, rule compliance and service improvement. Interior microphones are on during Rider Support voice calls or when a rider actively enables them. Exterior audio detection can detect sirens. Waymo says it does not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals.
Uber — Road Data Collection Privacy Hub and Uber privacy notice Outward-facing camera, lidar and radar data, along with location and time data. Faces and license plates may be incidentally captured. Uber says the data supports autonomous-driving research and validation, and that neither Uber nor its partners uses it to identify, track or profile individuals. Uber says access is restricted, data is encrypted, and data is retained only as long as necessary or legally required.
Tesla — Robotaxi privacy notice Exterior-camera analytics, cabin-camera analytics and sound detection. The notice describes use for testing, research, feedback and service improvement. It says cabin camera and microphone are not used by default until needed.

These descriptions are not interchangeable. Uber’s cited data-collection notice is specifically about outward-facing autonomous-driving data; it does not establish that Uber robotaxis record cabin audio or video. Waymo gives a specific activation rule for interior microphones. Tesla’s notice describes cabin analytics and sound detection but does not give the same detailed trigger conditions in the information summarized here.

Is your Waymo ride being recorded inside?

Waymo says its vehicles have interior cameras, which may capture the cabin for cleanliness, lost items, emergencies, rule compliance and service improvement. Its privacy policy also says it may process video and audio information. The available policy details do not establish that a human watches every trip or provide a fixed retention period for interior video.

For interior microphones, Waymo’s stated rule is narrower: “The microphones inside the car are only on during voice calls with Rider Support or when you actively choose to enable microphones inside the car.” Separately, the vehicle can use exterior audio detection to detect sirens. Exterior siren detection should not be confused with recording passengers’ cabin conversations.

Can a robotaxi identify you from a camera image?

Incidental capture and identification are different things. Uber acknowledges that outward-facing recordings may incidentally include faces and license plates, while saying neither it nor its partners uses that data to identify, track or profile people. Waymo says it does not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals.

Those statements address the operators’ stated use of the data; they do not mean that cameras cannot capture a recognizable person or vehicle in the scene. The policies summarized here do not describe a general passenger facial-identification program.

Who can see the footage, and how long is it kept?

Waymo’s described uses include Rider Support and operational purposes such as safety, cleanliness, lost items and service improvement. Its summarized policy details do not specify a general video-retention period or set out a complete list of who can review each category of footage.

Uber says access to its road data is tightly limited and encrypted, with retention only as long as necessary or legally required. It may share data with partners, service providers or authorities under specified conditions. That is not a promise that data is never disclosed; the stated limits depend on the circumstances and applicable requirements.

Tesla’s Robotaxi notice describes analytics for testing, research, feedback and service improvement, but the information summarized here does not state a retention period or provide comparable detail about human-review triggers and disclosures. A precise keep-until date cannot be inferred where the notice does not state one.

What can you do to limit collection?

There is no single passenger setting that switches off every sensor or trip record. Based on the stated policies, the clearest specific control is Waymo’s interior-microphone rule: a rider can avoid actively enabling the microphones and can end a Rider Support voice call when finished. That does not turn off exterior cameras, siren detection or trip-location records.

  • Check the operator’s current privacy notice before booking. Look for cabin sensors, activation conditions, retention, review and sharing rules; policies may differ by operator and service.
  • Use only controls the operator actually provides. The notices summarized here do not establish a universal opt-out from exterior sensing or trip-data collection, nor do they confirm one common self-service deletion path.
  • Limit what you disclose in the cabin. If you do not need support, avoid opening a voice call or enabling an optional cabin microphone. This is a practical privacy precaution, not a way to disable the vehicle’s safety systems.
  • Ask the operator about access or deletion. If you want a copy of, or deletion of, account-linked ride data, contact the operator through its official privacy or support channel and ask what data is linked to your account, what can be deleted, and what must be retained for legal or operational reasons.

Camera covers and phone privacy tools do not control a robotaxi’s exterior sensors, the vehicle’s own cabin systems, or trip records held by the operator.
