The phrase “your car is spying on you” is shorthand for those data flows, not proof that every car continuously listens to or records its occupants.
Here are seven ways vehicle data can affect privacy, what the available evidence does—and does not—establish, and the checks owners can make.

What data can a connected car collect?
A car’s data may come from more than the vehicle itself. The FTC and NHTSA’s 2017 connected-car workshop identified privacy concerns involving vehicle systems, location, and communications. Mozilla’s 2023 review also identified sources such as microphones, cameras, sensors, connected services, and apps. Which sources apply—and whether information is stored or sent elsewhere—depends on the specific car and service.

In a review of 25 major car brands, Mozilla reported that all 25 received failing privacy marks under its criteria. That is a result from Mozilla’s September 2023 review of that sample, not a finding about every brand, model, or current vehicle. Mozilla Foundation’s review

Seven ways car data can affect your privacy
1. Location and trip records
Navigation and telematics systems can create location records. The FTC and NHTSA identified real-time precise geolocation as potentially sensitive personal data because it can expose patterns of movement. Whether a vehicle records or transmits location, and for what purpose, depends on its features, settings, and applicable service terms. FTC and NHTSA’s connected-car workshop
2. Driving behavior data
Vehicle systems can generate information about how a car is driven and how its systems are used. In a 2025 discussion of surveillance pricing, the FTC cited reporting about driving-behavior data shared with third parties and used by insurers in pricing contexts. This documents a concern; it does not establish that every automaker shares such data or that every insurer uses it. FTC, “Issue Spotlight: The Rise of Surveillance Pricing”

3. Phone pairing and infotainment
Connecting a phone to a car can bring personal information into the vehicle’s infotainment environment. The 2017 FTC/NHTSA workshop identified the contents of driver communications as a possible privacy concern. The extent of access or retention depends on the phone, vehicle system, apps, and permissions involved. Unpairing a phone may not remove information already imported into a vehicle profile.
4. Voice controls and microphones
Microphones and voice-control features are among the data sources Mozilla identified in its review. A microphone’s presence does not, by itself, prove that a car continuously records conversations or sends audio to a company. To understand what happens, check the privacy terms for the exact vehicle and voice service, including whether audio or transcripts are retained and how voice features can be disabled.

Both installation and removal are very convenient and quick. Tip: metal hooks need to be broken straight by hand to insert into the car pillar gap
5. Cameras and other sensors
Cars may use cameras and sensors for vehicle functions, and Mozilla listed these among potential data sources. Their presence alone does not show that a particular camera continuously records, where information is stored, or whether it is transmitted. Those details require vehicle- and feature-specific documentation.
6. Apps and connected services
Manufacturer apps, websites, and telematics services can extend data collection beyond the dashboard. Ford’s privacy policy illustrates how specific this can be: it says some apps connected through SYNC may send information such as the vehicle identification number (VIN), SYNC module serial number, odometer reading, enabled apps, usage statistics, and debugging information. That example applies to the services described by Ford, not to all cars or connected apps. Ford Privacy Policy

7. Sharing and retention after collection
Privacy notices may describe sharing with service providers or other parties, and they may explain how long data is kept or whether it can be deleted. A policy’s permission language is not proof that every listed data type is collected or shared in every instance. Check the notice and settings for the particular vehicle and service, and distinguish what the company says it may do from what it says it actually does.

Is it legal for a car company to collect this data?
There is no blanket answer in the available federal sources: the FTC’s enforcement position is not that all vehicle-data collection is forbidden. In a May 2024 post, the FTC said it can take action against unlawful collection, use, or disclosure of personal data. The agency also wrote that firms do not have a free license to monetize people’s information beyond purposes needed to provide their requested product or service. Those statements describe the FTC’s enforcement posture and principles, not a comprehensive vehicle-specific rule or a determination about any particular automaker. How to reduce the data your car collects or retains
- Find the right privacy notice. Look up the notice for the exact make, model, and model year, plus any manufacturer app or connected service you use. Terms can differ by vehicle, service, and jurisdiction.
- Review settings and app permissions while parked. Check the vehicle’s privacy or data settings and the permissions granted to its phone app. Menu names and available controls vary; do not assume a control in one model exists in another.
- Choose which connected features to keep. Where available, consider turning off optional location, voice-assistant, remote, or data-sharing features you do not need. Disabling a feature may also remove convenience or functionality.
- Remove phone connections and personal profiles you no longer use. Delete paired phones and profiles when appropriate. Check the vehicle’s instructions to learn whether this also removes imported contacts, addresses, or other stored information.
- Reset before selling, trading in, or returning a vehicle. Follow the manufacturer’s documented deletion or reset procedure. Ford advises resetting if stored preferences or imported data such as an address book remain; other manufacturers may use different procedures. Ford Privacy Policy
How to compare cars on privacy
There is not enough current evidence here to rank today’s makes or models. For a meaningful comparison, read the privacy notice and connected-service terms for the specific vehicles you are considering, then check:
