In Chrome, start by checking the history window and search controls; in Firefox, treat a database error as a separate problem. Avoid deleting browser data until you know what it will remove.
Why can’t I find a site in my history?
A missing result does not always mean search is broken. In Chrome, the History page lists websites visited in the last 90 days. It does not include Incognito visits, pages already deleted, or Chrome pages such as settings pages. Google also says synced history can include visits from other devices when you are signed in and history sync is enabled.

- Check the date: If the visit was more than 90 days ago, it may no longer appear in Chrome’s History page.
- Check the browsing mode: Incognito visits are not saved in regular Chrome history.
- Check deletion: A page that has already been deleted from history will not appear in results.
- Check the profile and device: Make sure you are looking at the Chrome profile you used. Other-device visits appear when you are signed in and history sync is enabled.
Google’s Chrome history help describes these limits. If the page should be within scope, try the direct search controls before assuming the history data is damaged.

How to search Chrome history directly
Use the History page
- In Chrome, open the menu and choose History, then History again. You can also press
Ctrl+Hon Windows or Linux, orCommand+Yon Mac. - Enter a distinctive word from the page title or part of its address in the History search field.
- If there is no match, try a less generic title word or a distinctive domain fragment. A short or common term can make the intended page harder to pick out.
Search from the address bar
- Click Chrome’s address bar and type
@history. - Press Tab or Space, then enter your search terms.
These are Chrome’s standard history-search routes; neither can find an entry Chrome did not retain or that has been removed.

Is Chrome’s AI history search a repair?
No. Google describes AI-powered history search as an optional way to find pages using their contents, separate from ordinary History-page or address-bar search. It is not a fix for missing or damaged history entries. The feature is limited to people in the United States using Chrome in English, and it may be unavailable on profiles managed by an organization.
It can search only sites visited after the feature is turned on. Google says Chrome stores page contents locally in encrypted form for this feature and notes that the storage may affect Chrome performance. If you choose to enable it, use a precise query of two or more words for best matches. See Google’s instructions for AI-powered history search for current availability and controls.

What to do if Firefox reports a history database error
This is a different symptom from a search that returns no match. Mozilla documents the message: “The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.” It can occur when Firefox cannot access places.sqlite or favicons.sqlite in the profile. Mozilla identifies another program using a file or damage after an unexpected computer shutdown as common causes.

- Quit Firefox completely, then reopen it and check whether the error remains.
- If it does, restart the computer and open Firefox again.
Mozilla says these steps often resolve the issue. Its Firefox database-error guide was last updated June 18, 2026.

Recreate the databases only as a last resort
If restarting does not help, Mozilla’s next recovery procedure is to quit Firefox completely and rename or delete the affected database files in the Firefox profile folder. The instructions also account for SQLite shared-memory and write-ahead-log companions when present. Firefox creates fresh databases when it starts again. This can restore database operation, but Mozilla warns that browsing history will be lost; Firefox restores bookmarks from the latest bookmark backup.
Prefer renaming files rather than deleting them when following Mozilla’s procedure, so the originals remain available as a backup. Do not remove profile database files casually: the profile contains browser data, and the exact files and steps matter. Mozilla also lists creating a new Firefox profile as a later fallback.

Before resetting anything, narrow down the failure
Mozilla advises identifying the exact symptom before changing a profile: what happens, what you expected, how often it happens, whether other software changed, and whether new data survives a restart. If Firefox search alone is behaving oddly and no database error appears, check whether an extension is involved before attempting database recovery.

Can you inspect or export local browser history?
If you need a local copy for inspection rather than a repair, the browser-history project documents a command-line utility that can export history as CSV, JSON, or JSONL. Its version 0.5.0 documentation lists support for several browser families and profiles. Check the documentation for the version you install to confirm browser support and commands. Exporting can help you inspect available records, but it does not repair Chrome or Firefox search or restore entries the browser no longer has.
