Your App May Be Sending User Data to AI APIs and Ad Trackers: A Practical Guide to Finding and Stopping It

An app sends user data to an AI API or an ad tracker when personal or device data leaves the device for a destination that the user, the platform, or the app’s own disclosures do not account for. Stopping that requires auditing everything that leaves the app, including traffic from SDKs your team did not write. Then you cut what the feature does not need, configure each AI provider’s retention behavior, gate tracking behind platform consent rules, and make your App Store and Google Play disclosures match what the app actually does.

Whether your own app does this is an empirical question. This guide does not claim that any particular app leaks data, and it does not report tests of a specific product. It shows you how to find out what yours sends and where it goes.

Why third-party code is the usual blind spot

Most teams audit the code they wrote. Platform rules do not stop there. Apple says developers remain responsible for all code included in their apps, and its privacy manifests describe the data collected and used by third-party code such as advertising or analytics SDKs (Apple developer guidance on user privacy and data use). Google Play’s Data safety guidance covers data transmitted off-device by libraries and SDKs and makes the developer responsible for reviewing that third-party code (Google Play Data safety guidance).

  • 158 widely used Android third-party SDKs were examined in the 2024 arXiv preprint “A Large-Scale Privacy Assessment of Android Third-Party SDKs” (arXiv 2409.10411). The authors report 338 instances of privacy-data exfiltration, and more than 30% of the examined SDKs lacked a privacy policy.
  • Among SDKs that did have privacy policies, 37% over-collected user data and 88% falsely claimed access to sensitive data. These are results for that paper’s sample and method, not an estimate of how common the same behavior is across all apps.
  • In the 2025 preprint “Fingerprinting SDKs for Mobile Apps and Where to Find Them” (arXiv 2506.22639), 30.56% of likely fingerprinting behaviors in its dataset were attributed to advertising SDKs, and 23.92% to SDKs whose purpose was unknown or unclear. The dataset and detection method bound those figures; they do not measure app tracking in general.

Neither study is about AI APIs. The AI-provider guidance below rests on OpenAI’s published API documentation, and other vendors’ terms will differ.

Step 1: Map every outbound flow before changing code

Build an inventory that lists each data type the app can access, the screen or event that triggers its collection, whether the collection is necessary or optional, the identifiers that travel with it, and every destination it reaches. Capture outbound traffic from a test build with a network monitoring tool your team already knows, and compare the result with the inventory. Traffic you did not expect is a finding, not noise.

Destination Typical examples What to record
First-party backend Your own API servers Endpoints, fields sent, and retention on your side
AI provider API Inference or model endpoints Provider, endpoint, feature, data region if relevant, storage setting, and deletion route
Analytics Event and session SDKs Events, identifiers, and whether data is sent before or after consent
Crash and diagnostics Crash reporters Stack traces, device identifiers, and any user IDs
Advertising SDKs Ad networks and attribution Identifiers and whether data is used for targeting or measurement
App-controlled webviews Embedded pages you operate What the page collects and what it passes back to the app
Server-to-server transfers Your backend sending data to vendors Payload contents, triggers, and the vendor receiving them

Google’s disclosure scope distinguishes app-controlled webviews from users navigating the open web, so keep the two apart in your inventory (Google Play Data safety guidance). Record a documented reason for every destination. A destination with no reason on file is the first candidate for removal.

Step 2: Review the SDK supply chain

For each SDK, record its purpose, version, vendor documentation, permissions, initialization behavior, the domains it contacts, the identifiers it collects, and whether collection starts automatically or only when a feature is invoked. Then put these questions to the vendor in writing:

  • What data does the SDK receive, and which of it is collected by default?
  • Does it act only on the developer’s instructions, or does it use the data for its own purposes?
  • Does it build profiles across customers, or combine data with other apps or websites?
  • How long does it retain data, and how is deletion handled?
  • What changes in each update to its data collection?

Google warns that an SDK described as anti-fraud can still violate policy if it also sends data to third parties for advertising or analytics. A purpose label does not settle what leaves the device. Google Play policy requires secure handling of personal and sensitive data and says third-party SDK use must not cause policy violations (Google Play SDK requirements). Apple recommends contacting the SDK developer when its practices are unclear (Apple developer guidance). If the answers stay vague, treat the SDK as unvetted and either remove it or place it behind a consent gate.

Step 3: Check AI API transfers one retention question at a time

Sending user content to an AI API raises three separate questions. Do not merge them into a single “we don’t store your data” claim, because each one has a different answer and a different control.

Question What OpenAI’s API documentation says What your team must confirm
Is data used to train or improve models? Not by default, according to OpenAI’s published API data controls. The settings and terms that apply to the account and endpoint you actually call. A default is not a guarantee for every vendor or configuration.
Are prompts and responses kept for abuse monitoring? Abuse-monitoring logs can contain prompts, responses, and derived metadata. They are retained for up to 30 days by default, subject to exceptions. Whether your account has an exception or modified retention, and the retention window you can document.
Does the endpoint or feature keep application state? Endpoint behavior and application state vary, and some retention controls require approval. Each endpoint you use, how stored objects are deleted, and whether a control needs an approval you do not yet have.

OpenAI’s platform documentation says “Your data is your data.” Read that as a statement of principle that the rest of the same page qualifies, not as a promise of no retention (OpenAI API data controls).

Minimize what the model receives

  • Strip direct identifiers such as names, email addresses, and account numbers when the task does not need them.
  • Exclude unrelated context, such as other users’ content or full profile history.
  • Never place secrets, including API keys, session tokens, and passwords, in a prompt.
  • Send an excerpt rather than a complete record when the model needs only part of it.
  • Where a step does not require the AI API, consider keeping that step on the device.

Step 4: Check ad-tracking definitions and platform consent

Apple platforms and App Tracking Transparency

On Apple platforms, App Tracking Transparency (ATT) covers tracking: linking user or device data from your app with data from other companies’ apps, websites, or offline properties for targeted advertising or measurement, and sharing data with data brokers. Apple’s examples include a third-party SDK that combines data collected in your app with data from other developers’ apps, even if you say you did not use the SDK for that purpose (Apple developer guidance).

Do not rely on hashing an identifier to avoid ATT. Apple’s guidance says another identifier cannot be used to track a user without the required permission.

Google Play Data safety form

Check that the Data safety form reflects collection and sharing performed by libraries and SDKs in your app (Google Play Data safety guidance). Two points decide most disputes. Pseudonymous data still needs disclosure when it can reasonably be re-associated with a user. And an SDK that builds advertising profiles across multiple customers is not treated as service-provider processing for the form.

Step 5: Reduce, gate, and verify

Work through these changes in order of impact:

  1. Remove SDKs that duplicate functions the app already has, or whose purpose your team cannot explain.
  2. Remove permissions and data fields that no current feature uses.
  3. Delay SDK initialization until the feature that needs it is in use, where the technology allows. Analytics and advertising SDKs that start at launch are the usual candidates.
  4. Gate covered collection behind consent, and configure consent before the collection is enabled.
  5. Minimize the fields and identifiers each vendor receives, and send them only over secure transport.
  6. Review each SDK and vendor update for changes in data collection before you ship it.

OWASP’s MASVS-PRIVACY-1 control states the principle behind this list: “Apps should only request access to the data they absolutely need for their functionality and always with informed consent from the user” (OWASP MASVS-PRIVACY-1).

Reconcile the sources of truth

Compare the app’s configuration and observed traffic with the SDK documentation, your Apple privacy manifests and App Store privacy details, your Google Play Data safety declarations, and your privacy policy. In Xcode, the privacy manifests can be combined into a report that supports accurate App Store privacy details (Apple developer guidance). A mismatch means you investigate and fix either the implementation or the disclosure. Each source proves something different:

Source What it can establish What it cannot establish
Code and SDK configuration Which SDKs are included and when they initialize What the SDK sends at runtime, unless you observe it
SDK documentation The vendor’s stated data practices Whether the version you ship behaves that way
Apple privacy manifests Data types the app and its third-party code declare That the declarations match observed transfers
App Store privacy details and Google Play Data safety form What you disclose to users and to the platform That runtime behavior matches the disclosure
Observed traffic from a test build Destinations and payloads for the flows you exercised Flows you did not run, or behavior of production builds under other conditions
Privacy policy Your user-facing description of practices Anything the code does not already do

Choosing the right control for the problem

These controls solve different problems. Pick the one that matches the leak you found, and do not treat any single one as a substitute for the others.

Problem Control Limit
Too much data is collected or sent Data minimization at the point where payloads are built Reduces what is sent; does not change what a vendor does with what it receives
Data already reached an AI provider Provider retention and deletion settings Does not stop the transfer; governs storage and use, subject to vendor exceptions
A third-party code path is unnecessary SDK removal, or delayed initialization Removing an SDK removes the feature it supports; delaying helps only if the feature is not needed at launch
Tracking across other companies’ data Platform consent, such as ATT on Apple platforms Gates covered tracking; does not reduce what non-tracking collection sends
Disclosures do not match behavior Reconciling store forms and the privacy policy with verified flows Makes statements accurate; does not change behavior

When the audit finds a transfer you cannot justify

  1. Disable the call or SDK path in the next build. Use a feature flag if your release process has one.
  2. Ask the vendor in writing what data it holds about your users, and request deletion through its documented mechanism.
  3. Correct the App Store and Google Play disclosures and the privacy policy so they match the corrected behavior.
  4. Record the finding, the change, and the date in the inventory so the next audit starts from a known state.

Limits of platform guidance and outside review

  • Platform rules and provider settings change. Check the current wording on the pages linked above before you rely on them. The OpenAI details here reflect that provider’s documentation as of October 2026.
  • Google describes an optional, paid independent security review through Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA), evaluated against OWASP MASVS (Google Play Data safety guidance). It is an option for teams that want outside validation, not a requirement.
  • This guide does not give jurisdiction-specific legal advice. Your obligations under privacy law depend on where your users are and what your app does with their data, so take that question to counsel.
