The practical defense is to limit what it can access and do, and to review consequential actions before they happen. Here are 10 controls for personal use and organizational deployments.
Why an AI assistant can become a security risk
Prompt injection happens when instructions hidden in content an AI processes influence the assistant. NIST defines it as an attack that exploits the joining of untrusted input with a prompt created by a higher-trust party, such as an application designer. In other words, the risk can come from material an assistant reads, not just from what a person types. NIST’s prompt-injection definition and OpenAI’s explanation describe this general risk.

Whether manipulation leads to harm depends partly on the assistant’s permissions and available tools. OWASP calls the risk of an AI system taking damaging actions in response to unexpected, ambiguous, or manipulated outputs “excessive agency.” It identifies excessive functionality, permissions, and autonomy as common causes. OWASP’s guidance on excessive agency recommends reducing those capabilities and requiring human approval for high-impact actions.

The “BragJack” story is a separate claim, not proof that a particular browser assistant has been compromised. The September 26, 2026 Tech Edvocate article alleges a disclosure involving malicious extensions and several browser assistants, but it does not link a technical report, advisory, CVE, or primary disclosure establishing the details. The article’s account should therefore be treated as unverified, rather than as confirmation of a named vulnerability or affected-browser list.

10 controls to reduce what a manipulated assistant can do
1. Inventory your browser extensions
Review the extensions installed in each browser and identify ones you no longer use or do not recognize. Extensions can have special browser privileges; Chrome’s security guidance advises developers to request only the permissions they need. Treat an extension that can read or change site data as a meaningful access grant, not as a harmless add-on.
2. Check each extension’s permissions
Before keeping or installing an extension, inspect the permissions it requests and consider whether they fit its purpose. Be cautious if a simple feature appears to require broad access to browsing data. Permission labels and controls vary by browser and version, so use your browser’s extension-management page to review the current grants rather than assuming every browser presents them the same way.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
3. Remove extensions you do not need
Uninstall unused or untrusted extensions instead of leaving them installed “just in case.” This reduces the number of extensions that could access browser data or interact with an assistant. Chrome’s guidance supports minimizing extensions as well as limiting their permissions.
4. Disconnect unnecessary assistant integrations
Review connected apps, extensions, accounts, and services in the assistant’s settings. Remove connections that are not needed for your current tasks, especially ones that expose messages, files, calendars, or other private information. The principle is least privilege: an assistant should not retain access simply because a connection was convenient once.

5. Limit available functionality
Turn off assistant features and tools that are not required for the task, where the product allows it. An assistant that can only summarize a document has fewer ways to cause harm than one that can also send messages or modify records. OWASP recommends avoiding open-ended capabilities and minimizing functionality.
6. Give access only to the data a task needs
Choose the narrowest available scope when granting access, and avoid giving an assistant broad access to sensitive files or accounts for a one-off task. For example, share a specific document rather than an entire drive when the assistant only needs that document. This limits the potential impact if untrusted content influences the assistant.

7. Require approval before consequential actions
Keep a person in the loop before an assistant sends content, changes important records, or performs another high-impact operation. If an assistant supports confirmation or review settings, enable them for those actions. OWASP specifically recommends human approval for high-impact actions; a confirmation step is a safeguard, not a guarantee that an action is safe.

For agentic features that can plan or act across multiple steps, use the least autonomous setting that still completes the task. Avoid allowing open-ended, unattended activity where a narrower workflow or explicit checkpoints will work. This control matters especially when an assistant can act on sensitive information or critical systems.

9. For organizations, apply governance and monitoring
Organizations adopting agentic AI services should combine strong identity controls and oversight with threat modeling, monitoring, and regular security assessments. These are organizational risk-management measures, not settings every individual consumer can configure. CISA and its partners’ May 1, 2026 guidance recommends limiting agent autonomy and access—particularly to sensitive information and critical systems—and using layered defenses.
10. Use a security key where the account supports it
A FIDO2 security key can be an optional way to protect an account that supports security keys. Chrome recommends a security key as a preferred two-factor method for browser-extension developer accounts; that recommendation does not establish compatibility with every personal account or device. Check the service’s supported methods and keep an available backup sign-in method.

These steps reduce exposure and limit the consequences of a manipulated assistant; they do not guarantee that prompt injection or other attacks will be blocked. No single permission setting, security key, or layer of security is a universal fix. For individuals, start with browser extensions and unnecessary integrations, then narrow access and review consequential actions. Organizations need additional controls appropriate to the systems and data their assistants can reach.
