To use Googlebook’s phone-connected features, you’ll need a companion Android phone running Android 17 or later. The requirement is for the phone—not the Googlebook laptop—and it does not mean ordinary laptop functions or Android apps installed on the laptop require a phone.
What Android 17 unlocks on Googlebook
Googlebook is Google’s laptop category, built on Android technology with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. Its phone-connected tools link a nearby Android phone to the laptop so you can continue certain phone activities, access phone apps and files, and share the phone’s internet connection.

Google groups the cross-device options under Continue activity and Internet sharing. You can choose which options to enable. Google’s published product information also distinguishes using Android apps installed from Google Play on the laptop from interacting with apps running on a connected phone; app, game, and subscription availability varies. See Google’s Googlebook cross-device setup and troubleshooting guidance and its Googlebook FAQ.
Continue activity
Continue activity can surface phone apps, notifications, files, media, and tasks on the laptop. Android Developers describes one specific behavior: on Android 17 (API level 37) and later, Continue On can show an app-icon suggestion in the Googlebook taskbar for an activity on a nearby phone; selecting it can resume that activity. This is a documented platform behavior, not a guarantee that every app supports every handoff flow. See Android Developers’ Android 17 feature documentation.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Internet sharing
Internet sharing includes automatic Wi-Fi and instant hotspot options, letting the Googlebook use the phone’s connection. Google lists these as configurable features, not as a requirement for using the laptop generally.
What you need before pairing
Google’s support checklist sets the minimum phone version at Android 17 and requires the Googlebook to be running the latest Googlebook OS. The devices must also meet these conditions:

- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on for both devices.
- Both are signed in to the same Google Account.
- They share a Wi-Fi network or personal hotspot.
- Apps are up to date in the Play Store.
- The Wi-Fi network supports Multicast DNS (mDNS).
Google warns that public or corporate Wi-Fi may block the connection. If pairing fails on a managed or shared network, try a personal hotspot or another Wi-Fi network that meets the mDNS requirement.
How to set up Googlebook cross-device services
- Update both devices. Install the latest Googlebook OS update and update relevant apps from the Play Store. The phone must be on Android 17 or later.
- Connect the devices. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on both, then connect them to the same Wi-Fi network or personal hotspot.
- Use the same Google Account. Sign in with the same account on the phone and Googlebook.
- Choose the features you want. Open Googlebook’s cross-device settings and enable the relevant Continue activity or Internet sharing options. Google says the features can be selected separately.
- Test the connection. Try the activity handoff or internet-sharing option you enabled. Availability can depend on the app and network as well as the OS version.
If a phone feature does not connect
Google recommends toggling the cross-device service off and back on, restarting both devices, checking app and system updates, and checking the network. Confirm that the devices still share the same account and network, and that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi remain enabled. If you are using public or corporate Wi-Fi, its mDNS support may be the obstacle rather than the Android version.

Android 17 is not a general Googlebook requirement
Googlebook supports Android apps installed from Google Play, a desktop-class Chrome browser, and certain local development tools, according to Google’s product announcement. Those laptop capabilities should not be confused with phone integration. If you do not need phone-task handoff, phone app or file access, or phone-based internet sharing, the Android 17 threshold for those services is not a reason by itself to rule out the laptop.
Google’s September 21, 2026 announcement described initial hardware partners Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with U.S. shelf availability from October 4 and availability in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia from October 5. Those dates and regions describe the announcement at that time; current availability may differ. Google also said the platform receives feature drops and updates for up to 10 years.
