You No Longer Need to Visit the Lascaux Caves to Tour Them—Here’s How

The original Lascaux cave in Dordogne is still closed to the public, as it has been since 1963. You can nevertheless explore its art in three legitimate ways: use the French Ministry of Culture’s free online resources, visit the full-scale Lascaux IV replica in Montignac, France, or travel to Belgium for a dedicated Lascaux virtual-reality attraction.

First, you cannot enter the original Lascaux cave

The original cave is not open for ordinary visitors. Authorities closed it in 1963 to protect the paintings and the cave’s fragile environment from the damage associated with repeated visitation. The public experiences called Lascaux II, Lascaux III and Lascaux IV are reproductions or interpretive installations, not the prehistoric cave itself. The official explanation is available from Lascaux.

That distinction matters when a guide or headline says you can “visit Lascaux.” It should specify whether it means the original cave, the Lascaux IV replica, a web-based virtual visit or a physical VR exhibition.

The best free way to tour Lascaux from home

For a no-travel option, start with the French Ministry of Culture’s official Lascaux portal. It provides a virtual cave visit alongside video, archaeological explanations, conservation material and background on Paleolithic art.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Open https://archeologie.culture.gouv.fr/lascaux/en.
  2. Choose the section labeled “Visit Lascaux” or “Lascaux virtual visit”; the wording and layout may change.
  3. Explore the virtual cave, video material, explanations of the paintings, discovery history, archaeological research and conservation topics.
  4. Use a current desktop or tablet browser. A larger screen makes detailed panels and interactive material easier to examine.

The Ministry’s dedicated virtual-visit page is an on-demand digital resource, not necessarily a scheduled live tour. It also is not automatically a headset-based VR application. If an interactive viewer fails, try a current browser, temporarily disable aggressive script or content blockers, return to the main portal, or use its video and explanatory pages instead. The resource is presented as a public online service, with no admission charge listed in the retrieved material, but interface and access conditions can change.

What the online Lascaux experience includes

The Ministry portal goes beyond a single panoramic walk-through. Its subject areas include:

  • the cave and its paintings;
  • the surrounding prehistoric environment;
  • Paleolithic, or parietal, art;
  • the cave’s discovery;
  • archaeological research;
  • conservation and future perspectives;
  • virtual-visit, 3D and video resources.

That combination makes it useful for students, teachers and families who need context as well as images. It can also prepare travelers for a later visit to Lascaux IV.

Explore the Lascaux 3D model

The Ministry’s Lascaux 3D page links the cave model to the eCorpus platform. It is particularly useful when you want to understand the cave’s structure and gallery layout rather than simply look around a simulated viewpoint.

On that page, the French Ministry of Culture dates Lascaux to approximately 21,000 BC, around the transition between the Upper Solutrean and Badegoulian periods. It describes approximately 680 paintings, 1,500 engravings and an accessible gallery network totaling 235 meters. Those figures belong to the Ministry’s current presentation; inventories and dating conventions can differ between archaeological sources.

Want the closest physical experience? Visit Lascaux IV

Lascaux IV, the International Centre for Cave Art, is in Montignac-Lascaux, Dordogne. It contains a full-scale replica of the accessible original cave within a much larger interpretive complex. The official site describes more than 8,000 square meters and six scenographic spaces. The French Ministry also describes Lascaux IV as a replica combined with digital and immersive technologies at its Lascaux IV overview.

The public route generally begins with the cave portion, followed by the other spaces:

  6. Lascaux Workshop
  7. Theater of Paleolithic Art
  8. “Lascaux and the World” cinema
  9. Gallery of the Imaginary
  10. Immersion Room

The official FAQ estimates roughly one to 1.5 hours for the visit itself and two to three hours on site when the additional spaces are included. You are experiencing a carefully made public reproduction and interpretation center, not untouched original paintings.

The dedicated VR option in Belgium

Lascaux Expérience at the Préhistomuseum in Flémalle, near Liège, combines a virtual-reality cave presentation with an interactive exhibition and archaeologist-led workshops. Its program includes exploration of the paintings, prehistoric-life interpretation and Cro-Magnon activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The retrieved venue page listed €17 for the guided tour and exhibition. That is an on-site Belgian attraction, not a free at-home VR tour, so confirm current session times and ticket terms directly with the museum.

Which Lascaux experience is right for you?

Option Cost signal Travel Best for Main limitation
Ministry of Culture virtual visit Public online resource; no admission price listed None Students, families and remote learners Less sensory than a physical visit
Lascaux 3D Public online resource None Readers studying cave structure More analytical than a conventional walkthrough
Lascaux IV 2026 adult admission €23 Montignac, France Most complete public replica experience Timed ticket and travel required
Lascaux Expérience €17 listed for guided tour and exhibition Flémalle, Belgium Visitors specifically seeking headset-style immersion Paid, in-person attraction; terms may change

What you are—and are not—seeing

The original cave remains protected and inaccessible. Lascaux IV recreates the cave and surrounds it with interpretation; the Ministry’s website presents digital models, media and educational material; the Belgian attraction offers a separate physical VR program. None of these options places a visitor inside the untouched original or guarantees that a web viewer behaves like a 360-degree simulation on every device.

For the clearest match to your goal, choose the Ministry resource when you want free remote access, Lascaux IV when you are traveling in Dordogne, and Lascaux Expérience when a dedicated physical VR session matters most.
