You Just Shared Your API Key With an AI. Here’s How to Tell, and What to Do

If an API key was in a prompt, a pasted terminal log, a file an assistant could open, or the environment of a coding agent, treat it as exposed. Revoke or rotate it now, check usage for requests you don’t recognize, and update the legitimate services that used it. Deleting the message or file is not a substitute for rotation. This is OpenAI’s guidance for a suspected leak, and the same logic applies to any provider’s keys.

The headline is true only in specific cases. Not every AI product reads every local file, and not every product trains on every secret it receives. What matters is what the tool, feature, and plan can actually see, and whether your workflow put a long-lived credential within reach.

What “sharing a key with an AI” can actually mean

The same phrase covers four different events, and each has a different risk profile:

  • Direct paste. You typed or pasted the key into a chat window.
  • Incidental inclusion. A prompt contained a config file, stack trace, curl command, or terminal output that had the key in it.
  • Repository or file access. An assistant was given, or could index, a project containing the key (a committed .env, a hard-coded constant, a client-side bundle).
  • Agent execution. An autonomous coding agent ran code in an environment where the key was available.

The last case is the least obvious. OpenAI’s “Sandbox security” documentation states that agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment. If a secret is readable there, code the agent writes and runs can read it.

Two questions get conflated and should be kept apart. One is access: can the tool or the code it runs see the secret? The other is data use: what does the vendor retain or use to improve models? The first depends on your configuration. The second depends on the vendor’s current terms for your specific product and plan.

Can AI see my API key? Can an agent read my .env file?

An agent can see what its execution environment exposes. If it runs on your machine or in a workspace that includes your project directory, a .env file in that directory is readable by any code that has file access. The same goes for exported shell variables.

Environment variables feel safer than hard-coded keys, and they are better for keeping secrets out of source control. They are not a boundary against an agent that can read its own environment. OpenAI’s sandbox guide says explicitly that agent-generated code can read an environment key, and warns that injecting a stored secret into the environment still exposes it to that code. A secrets manager helps with storage, but once it injects the value into an agent-readable environment, the protection ends at that point.

What to do right now if a key may be exposed

  1. Revoke or rotate the key. OpenAI says to rotate immediately if a key is believed leaked. For another provider, use that issuer’s own current revocation procedure.
  2. Create the replacement, then cut over. OpenAI’s guidance describes making a new key, updating your applications, verifying they work, and then revoking the old one. If the leak is clearly active, revoke first and accept brief downtime.
  3. Review usage. Look in the provider’s usage and activity views for requests, models, or volumes that don’t match your work. OpenAI specifically recommends reviewing account usage.
  4. Update every legitimate consumer of the old key. Check deployment environments, CI variables, teammates’ local setups, and scheduled jobs. A forgotten dependency will fail after revocation, which is the signal you need to find it.
  5. Set spend limits as a backstop. Limits and hard enforcement can contain unexpected charges, but OpenAI cautions that enforcement is not instantaneous and spend can slightly exceed a limit. They do not replace rotation.
  6. Clean up the source. Remove the key from the prompt history, file, or repository where you can. Do this after rotation; the old value should be treated as burned either way.

Prevent it: fix the boundary, not just the habit

Basic key hygiene

  • Don’t share keys between people. OpenAI’s help center states that it does not support sharing API keys, and recommends a unique key per team member.
  • Use expiration and a rotation process, and restricted permissions where the provider offers them.
  • Never commit keys to source control or deploy them in client-side browser or mobile code. Route requests through a backend that holds the key.
  • Use environment variables rather than literals in code, and consider a key management service for production.
  • Monitor usage so abnormal activity shows up quickly.

For agent workflows specifically

Assume the agent can read anything in its environment, and design so there is nothing long-lived to read.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  • Keep third-party credentials outside the agent environment. OpenAI describes storing the real secret in a vault and using a trusted proxy that attaches it only to requests going to approved hosts. The agent never holds the real value. On self-hosted setups, you must supply and configure that proxy or server yourself, so it takes real infrastructure.
  • Restrict network destinations. An agent that can only reach approved hosts has fewer places to send anything it can read.
  • Separate workloads and users so one agent session cannot reach another’s secrets.
  • Limit tools, files, and working directories to what the task needs. Don’t launch an agent from a home directory full of dotfiles.
  • Use short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials for anything the agent must hold, so a leak has a small window and limited reach.

Detection layers

Secret scanning on commits and pull requests catches accidents, and human review of agent-created changes catches what scanners miss. GitHub documents secret scanning and required human review before merge for its Copilot cloud agent. Treat these as vendor-specific safeguards and a detection layer. They don’t prove that a secret sent to some other AI service can be recalled, and they don’t replace keeping the secret out of reach.

Comparing approaches by what matters

Question to ask Weak pattern Stronger pattern
Can the agent read the secret? Key in .env or exported environment variable in the agent’s workspace Real credential held by a trusted proxy or server, outside the agent environment
How is the key scoped? One shared, long-lived, full-permission key Unique per person or workload, restricted, with expiration and rotation
Where can requests go? Unrestricted network Approved destinations only
Can you detect misuse? No monitoring Usage review and spend limits
Who checks the output? Agent changes merged unreviewed Secret scanning plus human review

Does the vendor train on what I paste? It depends on the product and plan

There is no single answer, and anyone giving you one for “AI tools” is overgeneralizing. Two examples show why.

GitHub Copilot

GitHub’s Copilot page says that for Individual subscribers it may use interaction data (prompts, suggestions, and generated code snippets) to train and improve models, and that users can opt out. The same page gives different defaults for Business and Enterprise, including that prompts and suggestions are not retained for IDE chat and completions in that context. Plan and feature both change the outcome.

Anthropic

Anthropic’s Privacy Center article “Is my data used for model training?”, dated March 16, 2026, covers consumer products: Claude Free, Pro, Max, and consumer accounts using Claude Code. It says chats and coding sessions may be used for improvement when users allow it, when conversations are flagged for safety review, or when users otherwise opt in. It says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, within the article’s stated context. Commercial Claude for Work and API products are addressed separately, so don’t carry the consumer rules over to API use.

The practical rule: a policy that says your data won’t be used for training is not a reason to keep a secret in a prompt. Retention, safety review, logs, and shared workspaces are separate questions, and a key you’ve pasted is out of your control either way.

Prompt injection and other overlooked paths

An agent can be steered by text you didn’t write. GitHub’s documentation on risks for Copilot cloud agent says the agent has access to code and other sensitive information and could leak it, either accidentally or due to malicious user input. It identifies hidden messages in issue or comment content as a prompt-injection vector, and documents filtering hidden characters as a mitigation. The same concern applies to repository files and any tool-connected content the agent ingests.

A Cloud Security Alliance research note dated April 3, 2026 recommends auditing AI coding tools and MCP configurations, treating instruction files such as .cursorrules, CLAUDE.md, and .github/copilot-instructions.md as trust-sensitive, limiting tool permissions and working directories, and scanning AI-assisted commits for secrets. The note labels itself “Unofficial AI-assisted Research,” and its specific findings are time-sensitive, so use it as a checklist prompt rather than proof of any particular vulnerability.

A quick audit for your own setup:

  • Which directories can your assistant or agent open, and what secrets live in them?
  • Which MCP servers and tools are configured, and what can each reach?
  • Who can edit the instruction files in your repositories?
  • Do commits written with AI help go through secret scanning?

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I pasted an API key into ChatGPT or another chatbot?

Rotate or revoke the key at the issuer, review usage, and update your apps. Deleting the chat doesn’t undo the exposure, so don’t rely on it. Whether the vendor retains or uses the content depends on the product and plan, but rotation makes that question far less important.
