No—if all you need is a rendered webpage screenshot, you can send a URL to a hosted screenshot API instead of installing and operating a Playwright or Puppeteer browser runtime. If the screenshot is one step in a workflow that needs clicks, logins, or other browser actions, a managed browser session or your existing automation may fit better.
Can you take a website screenshot with an API?
Yes. A direct screenshot API accepts a webpage URL and capture options, renders it on the provider’s browser infrastructure, and returns an image. That can avoid setting up and maintaining a browser runtime in your own application environment. Browserless documents a REST screenshot endpoint; ScreenshotOne describes a hosted screenshot API.

This route is most suitable when the job is essentially “URL in, image out”—for example, a one-off capture or a scheduled screenshot with limited interaction. It does not guarantee that every page will render as expected: capture settings, dynamic content, authentication, lazy-loaded elements, site restrictions, and request behavior can still affect the result.
Which screenshot approach fits your workflow?
| Approach | How it works | Best fit | Who operates the browser infrastructure? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct screenshot API | Send a URL and options; receive an image. | Captures with little or no interaction. | The service provider. |
| Managed browser session | Connect your existing Playwright or Puppeteer script to a remote browser. | Multi-step automation that still needs browser actions. | The provider operates the browser; you retain the automation code. |
| Self-managed Playwright or Puppeteer | Your script launches and controls a browser in your environment. | Existing automation, custom runtime needs, or local deployment and data constraints. | You operate the browser runtime and its supporting infrastructure. |
These are workflow distinctions based on the documented service interfaces, not measured performance results. Browserless offers both a screenshot REST endpoint and connections to managed browsers for Playwright or Puppeteer; its overview also describes cloud and Docker self-hosting options (Browserless overview).
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
When is your own Playwright setup still the simplest option?
If you already have a Playwright project, its screenshot API can save an image to a file or return image bytes, and supports full-page and element captures. For a modest capture job—or one integrated into an existing script—you may not need a separate provider at all. See the Playwright screenshot documentation.
Keeping the browser in your own environment can also make sense when you need custom runtime behavior or have deployment and data-control requirements that favor self-hosting. The trade-off is operational ownership: browser installation, dependencies, execution capacity, and scaling remain your responsibility.

How to choose a hosted screenshot service
- Decide whether the task is capture-only. If a URL and options are enough, compare direct screenshot APIs. If the process must navigate, click, authenticate, or otherwise interact, look at a managed browser session or keep browser automation in your script.
- Check capture controls and limits. Verify the output formats and capture options you need, request limits, and how the service handles failures. Browserless documents endpoint options and troubleshooting in its screenshot API documentation.
- Account for page behavior. Work out whether the target page needs authentication, waits for dynamic content, loads content lazily, or restricts automated requests. A hosted browser moves the runtime; it does not remove these rendering concerns.
- Review geography, deployment, and data handling. Check whether the available region and hosting model meet your requirements, including any need to keep execution in your own environment.
- Compare cost at your expected volume. Consider monthly captures, request rates, and overage terms—not just the advertised starting price. A hosted service reduces runtime operations for your team, but that alone does not establish that it costs less overall.

The practical answer for Node.js
For a simple webpage capture in Node, the simplest route depends on whether you want to own the browser workflow. Use a direct screenshot API when you want to submit a URL and receive an image without managing a browser runtime. Use Playwright’s screenshot API if you already have a Playwright script or need the capture inside a larger sequence. Choose a managed browser when you need interactive automation but want the browser hosted elsewhere.
No comparative test establishes which route is faster, more reliable, or cheaper, and the documented capabilities do not guarantee success on every site. Choose based on workflow, controls, volume, operational responsibility, and data requirements—not an assumed performance advantage.
