You don’t need to switch to Samsung Keyboard to use Galaxy AI writing tools. In most cases, the AI actions are provided by Samsung’s Galaxy AI features inside supported apps, while your choice of keyboard only controls how you type.
If you prefer Google Keyboard, SwiftKey, Gboard, or another third‑party keyboard, you can keep it. You’ll just use the Galaxy AI writing buttons inside the app that supports the feature.

Samsung Keyboard is mainly responsible for text input and suggestion behavior. Galaxy AI writing tools, on the other hand, are actions (buttons or tools) provided by Samsung AI-enabled apps and services (the AI runs as an app feature, not as a keyboard-only feature).

What counts as a Galaxy AI writing tool (and where it runs)
“Galaxy AI writing tools” typically refer to features that rewrite, refine, summarize, or help you generate text—such as writing assistance in notes and chat assistance in messaging or supported communication apps.
These tools run inside specific apps like Samsung Notes and other Samsung apps that expose AI actions. Your keyboard choice affects what you type; it doesn’t change whether the AI action exists in that app.

Before changing keyboards, confirm your device and apps are eligible and updated. Galaxy AI availability depends on model and software version.
Device and software
- Supported Galaxy models: Galaxy AI is available on many newer flagships and midrange devices in the Galaxy lineup, with feature coverage varying by model.
- Software: Make sure your phone is updated to the latest One UI build. Feature names and placements can shift across One UI releases.
- Apps: Update the relevant Samsung apps from Galaxy Store and Google Play (some components are delivered via app updates).
Account and connectivity
- Galaxy AI features often require an internet connection.
- You may need to be signed in to your Samsung account and allow Galaxy AI permissions when prompted.
Use Galaxy AI writing tools while typing with any keyboard
The clean mental model is: your keyboard is the typing engine; Galaxy AI writing tools are the action buttons in the app.
So you keep your preferred keyboard, then use the Galaxy AI button inside the app to transform the text.
Method: Type with Google Keyboard (or any 3rd‑party keyboard) inside a Samsung AI-enabled app
Choose your favorite keyboard in system settings. Open an app that supports Galaxy AI writing tools (for example, Samsung Notes). Type normally with your keyboard, then tap the Galaxy AI action for rewriting, summarizing, or drafting.

Enable Galaxy AI so the writing buttons appear
If Galaxy AI tools don’t show up, it’s usually a settings or account issue—not a keyboard issue.
Samsung phone settings checklist
- Open Settings.
- Go to Advanced features (or AI features depending on One UI version).
- Find Galaxy AI.
- Turn on the main Galaxy AI toggle (or enable individual AI categories if presented).
- Check app-specific permissions if your device asks for them (microphone/camera aren’t always needed for writing, but some AI flows request permissions).
- Update Samsung Notes and any other AI-enabled Samsung apps from Galaxy Store.
Supported places to use Galaxy AI writing tools (no Samsung Keyboard needed)
These are common spots where Galaxy AI writing features appear. Availability varies by app version and region.
Samsung Notes (Writing Assist)
Samsung Notes is one of the most reliable places to access writing-focused Galaxy AI actions.
Workflow: write or paste your draft in a note using any keyboard → select text (if required) → use the Galaxy AI writing option inside the Notes interface.
Samsung Messages (Chat Assist where available)
Some Galaxy AI features appear in messaging experiences as “drafting” or “help” actions rather than as keyboard functions.
Workflow: open a conversation → type with any keyboard → use the Galaxy AI chat/writing action button inside the conversation UI (if your version exposes it).
Samsung Email (writing-related AI features where available)
If your Email app includes Galaxy AI writing actions, they show up in the composer toolbar or suggested actions area.

When the AI action is available in one app but not another, you can often move text by copying from the source and pasting into an AI-enabled writing field.
Example: draft in Messages → copy → paste into Samsung Notes Writing Assist → apply AI rewrite → copy the result back.
Step-by-step: Set your preferred keyboard, then use Galaxy AI writing tools
Do this in two phases: set your keyboard, then verify Galaxy AI still appears inside the app.
Set a non-Samsung keyboard as default (examples)
- Open Settings → General management.
- Tap Keyboard list and default (wording may vary).
- Disable or leave enabled Samsung Keyboard if you want, but set your preferred keyboard as default.
- Ensure your chosen keyboard is enabled in Manage keyboards.
- Test: open Samsung Notes and type. Confirm text input works with your chosen keyboard.
Verify Galaxy AI writing actions still work
- Open Samsung Notes.
- Create a new note and type a short paragraph.
- Look for a Galaxy AI icon, wand, “AI” button, or writing assist action in the note toolbar/context actions.
- Select the text if the app requires selection.
- Apply an AI writing action (rewrite/assist/draft) and review the result.
- Confirm the output inserts back into the note without switching your keyboard.
Common gotchas and how to fix them
Most Galaxy AI “not working” problems come from app version, settings, or text/language mismatch—not the keyboard itself.

AI buttons missing in the app
Fix it in this order:
- Update the Samsung app (for example, Samsung Notes) from Galaxy Store.
- Re-check Settings → Advanced features → Galaxy AI and confirm it’s enabled.
- Restart the app, then retry the action.
- Sign out and back into your Samsung account if prompted by the app.
Galaxy AI needs a login or region permissions
If you see prompts about eligibility, accept the prompts and confirm you’re signed into a Samsung account on the device.
Also ensure your device region/language is set to a supported configuration for your Galaxy AI features.

Keyboard focus steals the cursor
Sometimes the cursor focus changes when you select text or open AI menus. If the AI tool fails to “grab” the selected text:
- Tap inside the text field once to restore cursor focus.
- Try selecting a smaller chunk of text (1–2 sentences) and run the AI action again.
- Re-open the note/editor screen and retry.
Text language mismatch
Galaxy AI writing tools may behave differently depending on the language detected in your draft.

- If it’s multilingual, try running the action on a single-language paragraph first.
Offline mode / connectivity issues
Many Galaxy AI writing actions need a network call. If the button produces errors or a spinner:
- Switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile data (or vice versa).
- Disable and re-enable airplane mode for a clean network refresh.
- Wait 30–60 seconds, then retry.
Do you ever need Samsung Keyboard?
Usually, no—if your goal is just to use Galaxy AI writing tools, you can do it from the supported app’s AI actions.
However, some “smart suggestion” or “AI assist” experiences can be integrated more tightly with Samsung Keyboard than with other keyboards.
When Samsung Keyboard is helpful
- When you want AI-like suggestions directly in the typing experience (not just inside an AI-enabled app action button).
- If your specific Galaxy AI feature is documented to work in keyboard context on your model/software build.
What still works without it
- Writing assist features that run inside Samsung Notes or other Samsung apps.
- Rewrite/generate actions triggered by AI buttons in supported UI components.
- Copy/paste workflows that feed text into an AI field and return results.
Alternatives if an app won’t show Galaxy AI writing tools
If you can’t find the AI action in the app you want, try these options before reinstalling anything.

Use copy/paste with an AI field in the app
Copy your draft → paste into the app that has the AI writing tool available → apply AI rewrite → copy the result back.
Use third-party writing tools as a fallback
If you’re in a workflow where Samsung’s AI tool isn’t available for your exact context, third-party writing tools (including apps that support clipboard-based drafting) can act as a temporary replacement.
FAQ
Will Galaxy AI writing tools work if I uninstall Samsung Keyboard?
Usually, yes—because the writing tools are app-based. But if your device/model has a feature that specifically hooks into Samsung Keyboard context, you may lose that narrow feature while still keeping the app-based tools.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Galaxy AI writing work with iPhone-style keyboards (like Gboard)?
Yes. If the AI action is exposed in the Samsung app UI (for example, in Samsung Notes), your keyboard doesn’t need to be Samsung Keyboard. You’ll just trigger the AI action from the app.
Why does Galaxy AI show up in one app but not another?
Feature rollout and app integration vary by app, One UI version, and device model. Also check that you updated both the app and your system settings for Galaxy AI.
What should I do if the AI rewrite result looks wrong?
Try a smaller input, use clearer prompts (where the app provides prompt options), and ensure the text language matches what you want the AI to produce.
Bottom Line
You can use Galaxy AI writing tools without switching to Samsung Keyboard. Set any keyboard you want for typing, then trigger the Galaxy AI writing actions inside the Samsung app where the feature is supported.
If the AI buttons are missing, focus on One UI/app updates and Galaxy AI enablement in Settings—keyboard choice is rarely the real culprit.
