Yes, Microsoft Office is still available without a subscription. Microsoft’s current official one-time option is Office Home 2024 for one PC or Mac. The widely reported $27.97 price was a temporary July 2026 promotion for Office Professional 2021 for Windows, not Microsoft’s standing store price; that offer ended on July 26, 2026.
What the $27.97 Office deal actually was
On July 20, 2026, Boing Boing Shop reported Microsoft Office Professional 2021 for Windows at $27.97, describing it as $192 below a regular price of $219.99. The promotion covered a one-time license for one compatible Windows PC and was scheduled to end July 26 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

The advertised Professional 2021 package included Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, Access and the free version of Teams. Popular Science also covered the offer as a third-party deal and disclosed that its publisher could earn a commission. In other words, $27.97 was a time-limited reseller promotion, not Microsoft’s official consumer-store price and not a price you should assume remains available.

Office Home 2024
Microsoft Support says Office 2024 is sold as a one-time purchase: you pay once for Microsoft 365 apps on one computer. Microsoft’s Office Home 2024 product page describes an edition for one PC or Mac containing the classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for home or school use.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
A one-time purchase includes security updates, but it does not receive new feature upgrades throughout its life. When Microsoft releases a later major edition, upgrading requires buying that edition separately. Microsoft 365 subscriptions, by contrast, keep the desktop applications continuously updated and add subscription services such as cloud storage.

| Office Home 2024 | Microsoft’s current one-time-purchase product; price not stated in the supplied information | One PC or Mac | Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for home or school | Security updates, but no new feature upgrades; a later major release requires a new purchase |

Which option fits your situation?
Choose a one-time edition when you want predictable ownership
Office Home 2024 is the clearest route if you need standard Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on a single computer and do not want a recurring bill. Its applications remain tied to the purchased release, so it suits users who value a stable feature set more than continual additions.

Consider Professional 2021 only after checking the listing
A listing near $27.97 may still appear through a reseller, but it is not automatically the same promotion reported in July. Check the seller identity, whether the license is a legitimate retail license, how activation works through Microsoft’s normal account process, transfer rights, refund policy, the final checkout price and the one-Windows-PC restriction. Confirm that your Windows version is compatible and that the listing clearly names Office Professional 2021 rather than a trial, volume key or account shared by someone else.
Use Microsoft 365 when services and new features matter
A subscription is the better fit when you need continuously updated desktop applications, cloud storage or the broader services bundled with Microsoft 365. The trade-off is that access depends on keeping the subscription active.

How to buy without accidentally overpaying or buying the wrong license
- Start with the official product: Review Microsoft’s Office Home 2024 listing and verify that it says one-time purchase, one PC or Mac, and the applications you need.
- Match the platform: The $27.97 Professional 2021 promotion was Windows-only and limited to one PC; it is not a Mac license.
- Audit third-party offers: Confirm the seller, edition, license type, activation route, transfer terms, refund policy and total price before paying.
- Verify the entitlement after purchase: The key or redemption process should lead to activation through your own Microsoft account’s normal Office setup flow, not require credentials belonging to another person.
- Check what is missing: One-time editions do not include the full Microsoft 365 subscription bundle, and Office Home 2024 does not list Outlook, Publisher or Access among its included applications.
Is Office 2021 a “lifetime” license?
“Lifetime” generally means the license does not renew monthly or annually; it does not mean the software receives every future feature or remains supported forever. Office 2021 is a fixed release. Microsoft’s one-time-purchase policy distinguishes security updates from new feature upgrades, and moving to a later major version requires another purchase.

The figure is best understood as a historical, time-limited deal price from July 2026. It should not be presented as Microsoft’s current price or as proof that every inexpensive Office key is legitimate. For a current, officially documented purchase without a subscription, Office Home 2024 is the relevant Microsoft product; for any bargain Office Professional 2021 listing, verify the live offer and license terms before checkout.
