If the file changed but its download URL did not, a browser, proxy, or CDN may still be serving a cached copy. For a routine release, upload the new file under a versioned filename or path and update the link buyers use. If the URL must stay fixed, invalidate the relevant CDN object—but remember that this does not automatically clear browser or intermediary caches.
Why buyers can still get the previous file
Uploading a replacement to your origin does not guarantee that every request immediately receives the new bytes. A cache along the delivery path may return its stored response while it remains fresh under that cache’s rules. The relevant path can include the buyer’s browser, a corporate or internet-service-provider proxy, and a CDN between your site and its visitors. AWS explains that invalidating a CloudFront object does not remove copies already held by local browser or proxy caches.

Start with the exact buyer-facing download URL. Confirm that the origin has the intended file and that the page, manifest, or application actually points to the URL you expect. If the URL is unchanged, investigate its cache headers and the behavior of each relevant cache layer before assuming the upload failed.

For normal releases, a versioned filename or path is usually the clearest way to publish a new revision. Invalidation is useful when you must keep the URL or need to remove a stale CDN object urgently. The controls and outcomes depend on your hosting configuration; the comparison below reflects AWS guidance on updating CloudFront content and Google Cloud CDN best practices.

A versioned URL also makes revisions easier to distinguish in logs and supports rolling forward or back. Its main risk is leaving an old page or manifest pointing to the previous URL. Invalidation preserves the URL, but clearing a CDN object is not the same as purging every copy held elsewhere.
Publish a replacement without exposing a broken or partial download
Changing the link before its target is ready can replace a stale-file problem with a missing-file or incomplete-file problem. Publish dependencies first, then make the page or manifest reference the new release. If you must overwrite a fixed path, avoid exposing an in-progress upload: stage the complete file under a temporary name and switch it into place only after the upload finishes. Google Cloud recommends atomic updates to reduce the chance that a cache stores partial content.

- Prepare the complete release. Upload the new file and any dependencies it needs before publishing a reference to them.
- Use a versioned destination when possible. Give the changed file a new filename or path so it has a distinct URL.
- Update the reference last. Change the download page, manifest, or application configuration only after the new target is available.
- Verify the buyer-facing URL. Open the link buyers will use and confirm it resolves to the intended release.
Keep older versions available for as long as compatibility or rollback needs require; remove them when those needs end. The right retention period depends on your product and release process.

If the public URL has to remain fixed, use the CDN provider’s documented invalidation process for the affected object. An invalidation tells the CDN to remove matching cached content; it is not a command that reaches into every buyer’s browser or every intermediary proxy. AWS explicitly notes that local browser or corporate proxy copies may persist until their own cached responses expire. See CloudFront’s invalidation documentation.

- Identify the exact URL or CDN path serving the stale file.
- Submit an invalidation for the matching object through your provider’s documented controls.
- Wait for the provider’s invalidation process to take effect, then request the real buyer-facing URL again.
- If some users still receive the old file, check their browser or intermediary cache behavior separately rather than assuming the CDN invalidation failed.
Do not rely on arbitrary query strings to bust the cache
Adding a query parameter such as ?v=2 only helps if the platform treats that parameter as part of its cache key. Cache-key rules differ, and a new query string does not solve every deployment hazard: Google Cloud warns that non-atomic origin updates can still cause partial content to be cached.
Shopify is a specific example of why platform rules matter. Shopify’s March 2, 2026 changelog said bare query strings would stop refreshing cached assets effective March 24, 2026. Its current platform guidance directs theme developers to use Shopify’s asset URL filters and supported version parameter; unsupported parameters will not bust the cache. Before adding a parameter
- Check the hosting platform’s documented cache-key behavior.
- Use only the platform’s supported versioning mechanism.
- Prefer a versioned filename or path when you control the URL and need predictable release selection.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Check the origin and reference. Confirm the uploaded bytes are correct and inspect the exact link, manifest, or application URL buyers follow.
- Decide whether the URL can change. For a routine update, publish a versioned file and update references. This makes the intended revision explicit and helps with rollback.
- Publish safely. Ensure dependencies are ready and avoid exposing a partial upload; switch references only after the new file is complete.
- Use invalidation if the URL must remain fixed. Invalidate the relevant CDN object, then test the actual delivery URL.
- Check other cache layers. If the CDN now serves the intended file but a buyer still receives the old one, account for the browser or proxy’s separate freshness rules.
- Verify query-string behavior before using it. Confirm that your platform includes the parameter in its cache key and supports that method.
