Yes. A sub-$1,000 DIY tower can deliver strong 1440p gaming when the graphics card gets priority and the budget avoids expensive cases, elaborate cooling and oversized storage. A sensible starting point is a Ryzen 5 7600-class processor paired with a Radeon RX 7800 XT-class card, then 32GB of DDR5, a 1TB NVMe SSD and a quality 700W-or-larger power supply.
That budget is for the computer tower. Windows, a monitor, keyboard, mouse, shipping and sales tax can push the final checkout total higher, and component prices change daily. Check a synchronized retailer basket on the day you buy.

What performance can you expect at 1440p?
The graphics card determines most 1440p frame rates, so this build class spends more of the budget on the GPU than on premium case features or an enthusiast processor. AMD describes the Radeon RX 7800 XT as “the ultimate upgrade for 1440p gaming” and equips it with 16GB of GDDR6 memory.

A balanced parts plan
| Part | Target specification | Reason and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics card | Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB, or a current card with similar 1440p street pricing | Put the largest share of the budget here. Compare rasterized 1440p performance per dollar, ray tracing, upscaling, VRAM, power draw, noise and live price. |
| Processor and platform | Ryzen 5 7600-class CPU with an AM5 motherboard | A value match for this GPU at 1440p, with an upgrade path on the AM5 platform. Verify motherboard BIOS support for the selected processor. |
| Memory | 32GB DDR5 preferred; 16GB as a cost-cutting fallback | Use a matched dual-channel kit supported by the board. Sixteen gigabytes costs less but leaves less room for new games, background apps and multitasking. |
| Storage | 1TB NVMe SSD minimum; 2TB when a discount makes it fit | Modern game installs are large. Confirm the motherboard has the required M.2 slot and that the drive includes the correct mounting hardware. |
| Power supply | 700W or higher from a reputable model family | AMD recommends at least 700W for the RX 7800 XT. Check the unit’s native GPU connectors, efficiency certification, protections and warranty. |
| Case and cooling | Airflow-focused case and a compatible CPU cooler | Spend on ventilation and fit rather than RGB or premium materials. Confirm GPU length, radiator or cooler clearance, motherboard size and PSU bay dimensions. |
How to keep the complete tower under $1,000
Start with the GPU’s live price
Set the ceiling for the graphics card first, then price the remaining parts around it. A current equivalent can make more sense than an RX 7800 XT if its 1440p performance, VRAM and power requirements are comparable at the price you find. Do not use the old $499.99 MSRP as a promise of what a card costs today.
Trim luxury features before capacity
Choose a plain mesh-front case, the cooler included with the processor when it is adequate, and a single 1TB SSD before sacrificing the graphics card. Avoid paying for glass panels, built-in lighting, premium fans or oversized liquid cooling when those dollars could improve frame rates.

Decide what the budget includes
Write down whether your $1,000 limit covers only the tower. Add the operating system, display, input devices, Wi-Fi adapter, shipping and local tax separately if necessary. A tower-only target is much easier to meet than an all-in setup with a 1440p monitor.

- Socket: The Ryzen 5 7600-class processor requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory; do not substitute an older socket or DDR4 board.
- Firmware: Confirm the motherboard ships with a BIOS that recognizes the chosen CPU, or that it supports a BIOS update without an installed processor.
- Graphics clearance: Measure the card’s published length and thickness against the case’s maximum GPU dimensions, including front fans or radiators.
- Power connectors: Make sure the PSU supplies the GPU’s required PCIe leads without unsafe adapters or overloaded cables.
- Cooling: Check CPU cooler height, memory-module clearance and the case’s supported fan positions.
- Storage lanes: Consult the motherboard manual because some M.2 slots disable specific SATA ports or share bandwidth.
Assembly and setup sequence
- Install the CPU, memory and M.2 SSD on the motherboard outside the case. Align the processor triangle, lock the socket, and seat the memory in the board’s recommended two-slot configuration.
- Mount the CPU cooler using its AM5 hardware. Remove any protective film from the cooler base and apply thermal paste if the cooler does not have it pre-applied.
- Install the motherboard standoffs in the case layout that matches the board size, then secure the board without overtightening.
- Fit the power supply with its fan oriented toward a ventilated panel and route the 24-pin, CPU EPS and GPU cables before installing the graphics card.
- Install the graphics card in the top full-length PCIe slot, secure its bracket and connect every required power plug.
- Connect the case power switch, USB and audio headers, storage cables if used, and front or rear fans. Keep cables away from fan blades.
- On first boot, enter firmware setup, enable the memory’s rated profile, confirm the CPU temperature and verify that the SSD and full memory capacity are detected.
- Install the operating system, motherboard and graphics drivers, then test several games at 1440p. Start with high or ultra raster settings and adjust ray tracing, shadows and upscaling per title.
Where alternatives make sense
Choose a different GPU for ray tracing
An Nvidia alternative may be preferable when your game library depends heavily on ray tracing or DLSS. Compare a card’s current street price, native 1440p results, ray-traced results, VRAM and power use rather than choosing by brand alone.

Drop to 16GB only as a deliberate compromise
A 16GB kit can protect the graphics-card budget, but background applications and newer releases can consume the remaining headroom. Plan to replace it with 32GB later only if the motherboard has accessible slots and matching upgrade support.
Buy 2TB storage when discounts are real
Two terabytes reduces shuffling between games, but it should not force a weaker GPU or an untrustworthy power supply. A second NVMe drive can be added later if the board and budget support it.

Common failure points
The checkout total exceeds $1,000
Recheck tax, shipping, Windows and peripherals first. If the tower alone is over budget, remove cosmetic upgrades, keep the 700W-class PSU and 1TB SSD, and look for a temporary GPU discount before cutting the CPU platform.
The system powers on but shows no image
Reseat the graphics card and its power cables, connect the display to the GPU rather than the motherboard, verify the CPU EPS cable, and test one memory module in the board’s recommended slot. A BIOS compatibility problem can also prevent booting.
Games stutter despite high average FPS
Check background memory use, shader-compilation behavior, driver versions, storage free space and CPU or GPU temperatures. If a title is ray-tracing heavy, reduce those effects or enable its supported upscaling mode.
The computer runs hot or loud
Confirm that front or bottom intake fans and rear or top exhaust fans are oriented correctly, remove shipping films, clean blocked filters and verify that the cooler is firmly mounted. A better-ventilated inexpensive case is often more effective than an expensive closed-front design.
Quick Recap
What to verify before you buy
- Refresh every component price on the same day; no synchronized October 15, 2026 retailer basket establishes a universal under-$1,000 total.
- Confirm whether the GPU is new, open-box or refurbished and read the warranty terms.
- Check that the chosen card’s dimensions, power plugs and recommended PSU capacity match the case and power supply.
- Keep a small reserve for an extra fan, BIOS update service or price changes instead of spending the entire limit on the initial list.
