It is a carrier call-forwarding setting, so it is usually changed through your mobile carrier, not through the Settings app on an Android or iPhone. Some carriers let customers change it with a dial code or through support, and some do not allow a customer-side change at all. Start with your own carrier’s current instructions.
Why the phone’s settings cannot change the timer
When nobody answers, the call is handed to the network. The delay before that handoff is controlled by the carrier’s voicemail and call-forwarding configuration, which lives on the network side of your line. Your handset can ring, vibrate, or show a missed-call notice, but it does not decide how long the network waits before it forwards the call.

That is why the usual places people look do not help. Google’s Phone app help for Android describes the question as changing the number of rings before voicemail, and it tells users to consult their carrier to make that change. The sound controls in the Phone app let you pick a ringtone, which changes what the phone sounds like and nothing about when the call is forwarded.
What the phone can and cannot change
- Ringtone and vibration: changeable on the phone. These change how the incoming call feels, not how long it rings before voicemail.
- Apple Live Voicemail: on iPhone, this shows a live transcript while a caller leaves a message. It is a voicemail display feature, not a timer. Apple also states that calls made while the iPhone is off or out of carrier range go to carrier voicemail if it is available.
- Carrier forwarding delay: set by the network. Whether you can change it depends on your carrier, country, and plan.
How carriers handle the delay
Carriers differ. Google’s guidance notes that many carriers offer ring-duration changes, but that is not the same as saying every carrier does. The three examples below show the range of answers the reviewed carrier sources give. They are examples, not a list of what your carrier allows.

| Carrier and market | How the delay is changed | Documented values | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T, U.S. support numbers | Contact AT&T support: 611 from an AT&T Wireless phone, 800.331.0500 for AT&T, or 800.901.9878 for AT&T Prepaid | Not stated | AT&T Wireless Customer Support, updated 2025 |
| Vodafone, UK service only | Dial a carrier-specific code and press Call | 5 to 30 seconds in 5-second steps; 15 seconds is the standard | Vodafone UK support page, year not stated |
| Verizon Wireless, U.S. | A Verizon Support reply on its community forum says the duration can no longer be modified | Approximately 30 seconds, roughly 4 to 8 rings depending on ringtone | Verizon Support community reply; the page does not display a response date |
AT&T: ask support rather than guessing a code
AT&T’s support guidance says customers who want more time before calls go to voicemail should contact AT&T directly. The published support numbers are listed above. Do not use a dial code found for another network or country in its place.
Vodafone UK: a documented code for one service
Vodafone UK documents a code that sets the delay on its own network. Dial **61*121*10*, enter the number of seconds, press #, then press Call. Vodafone lists 5 to 30 seconds in 5-second increments, with 15 seconds as the standard. For example, 25 seconds is entered as **61*121*10*25#. The code is specific to Vodafone UK and should not be tried on other carriers.

Verizon: a stated limit, not a universal rule
A Verizon Support reply on the company’s community forum says Verizon Wireless sends calls to voicemail after about 30 seconds, which is roughly 4 to 8 rings depending on the ringtone, and that the duration can no longer be modified. That is a community reply from Verizon Support, not a published policy for every Verizon line, and the page does not show when it was posted. If you are on Verizon, confirm the current position with Verizon before you rely on it.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to request a change from your carrier
- Confirm the carrier and country for the mobile line that is affected. A business line, prepaid plan, or line added by another account holder may be handled differently.
- Find the carrier’s current support page, or call its customer support line and ask whether the delay before calls go to voicemail can be changed on your line.
- If the carrier documents a dial code for your service, enter it exactly as published and check that the result is the value you asked for.
- If the carrier says the interval is fixed, accept that answer. A ringtone change or a new phone will not alter the network timer.
If the carrier says the delay cannot be changed
- Check whether the carrier offers visual voicemail or call-screening features that let you answer or decline sooner.
- Ask whether a different plan or line type covers the change, since eligibility can depend on the service.
- Do not install third-party tools or apply unofficial codes to change the forwarding timer. A carrier’s configuration is the only reliable route to a change.
Caveats on what this covers
The evidence reviewed for this article covers three carrier examples and two platform descriptions. Google and Apple describe how their phone software behaves; neither guarantees how a carrier handles forwarding, and neither describes operating system versions in a way that changes the carrier-side answer. Treat any carrier figure as applying to that carrier and market at the time its page was published.
