“You Are Being Rate Limited” usually means Discord has temporarily throttled a request, not permanently banned your account. The correct fix depends on where it appears: phone verification, a server invite, ordinary Discord use, Limited Access, or the developer API. Stop retrying, check Discord’s status, wait for the relevant cooldown, then try once through the official app or website.
What the Discord rate-limit message means
Discord temporarily refuses or delays requests when too many arrive in a short period, when a request pattern resembles abuse, or when a verification system enters a cooldown. The message alone does not identify whether the limit applies to your account, IP address, phone number, an invite resource, or an API route.

It is therefore not automatically a permanent ban. A server ban, an account-level Limited Access action, an IP/API restriction, and a short endpoint cooldown can all feel similar but require different remedies.

Do these steps first
- Stop retrying. Close duplicate invite tabs, stop refreshing, and do not resubmit a phone number repeatedly.
- Record the exact wording. Note whether it says “You are being rate limited,” “The resource is being rate limited,” “Verification Required,” “Something looks off with your account,” or shows error 1015.
- Check Discord Status. Discord’s error guide recommends checking the status page when several features fail: Discord Error Message Guide.
- Wait without testing every few minutes. Repeated attempts can keep hitting the limiter or create more invalid requests.
- Retry once in the official Discord app or at the Discord website.
- Escalate to the right party if it remains: Discord Support for account or verification problems, a server administrator for a server ban or invite, and developer support for bot/API traffic.
How long does a Discord rate limit last?
There is no universal duration. For phone verification, Discord specifically says a “Rate Limit/Recently Used” error requires waiting 24–48 hours before trying again: Verification Required FAQ. Consumer app and invite cooldowns do not have one published duration in the cited support guidance.

For API requests, use the timing Discord returns rather than guessing. API responses can include a Retry-After header and a retry_after value: Discord API rate limits.
Fix the phone-verification version
Phone verification is the clearest documented consumer case. Discord says the number must be a valid mobile number, cannot already belong to another Discord account, and cannot be a VoIP, burner, or landline number.
- If the message says “Rate Limit/Recently Used,” wait 24–48 hours, then make one attempt.
- If the number is attached to an old or accidental account, resolve that account association through Discord’s number-removal guidance instead of repeatedly trying to attach it elsewhere.
- Contact Discord Support if the cooldown persists or a valid number is incorrectly reported as already used.
Fix an invite or server-join restriction
If one invite fails while other Discord features work, first treat it as an invite problem rather than a Discord-wide ban. Invite codes are case-sensitive and may be expired, revoked, copied incorrectly, or invalid. The server may also be full, or your account may have reached Discord’s server-membership limit.

Discord’s invalid-invite guide states that users can join up to 100 servers, or up to 200 with Discord Nitro; plan limits can change. It also says server bans are IP-based and must be handled by that server’s administrators: Invalid Invite Links.
- Ask for a fresh invite and verify every character in the code.
- Check whether you are already at the 100/200-server limit.
- Ask the server’s moderators whether you are banned or whether new members are restricted.
- If repeated invalid invite requests preceded error 1015, stop requesting links and wait. An older Discord community discussion describes excessive invite API requests as a possible temporary restriction, but it is not a universal duration or current policy: community discussion.
When Discord fails across devices or shows error 1015
Failure on multiple devices, especially on the same Wi-Fi network, can indicate an IP or broader anti-abuse restriction—or an outage. Error 1015 does not prove that your Discord account itself is banned; the affected layer could be an IP, invite request, API path, or verification process.
Reinstalling Discord, clearing cache, changing browsers, or restarting a computer can rule out local corruption, but none of those actions directly resets a server-side phone, account, or IP cooldown. A VPN is not an official fix. It may change an IP symptom while leaving the underlying account, phone, invite, or anti-abuse issue unresolved, and it can trigger additional verification. Do not use a VPN to evade a server or account restriction.

Test the official app and website once, check whether existing servers load, and note whether voice works while messages or invites fail. If necessary, perform one diagnostic test on a trusted alternate network; do not turn network switching into repeated bypass attempts.

Limited Access is an account-level anti-abuse restriction, not an ordinary short cooldown. Discord says affected accounts may still message existing friends but cannot send outgoing friend requests, direct-message newly added friends, or join new servers. The client displays a red banner and may provide Regain Access Here.
Use that recovery or appeal flow rather than repeatedly retrying invites or creating another account. Details are in Discord’s Limited Access FAQ.

API rate limiting is separate from consumer UI messages. Treat HTTP 429 as a rate-limit response and honor the returned Retry-After header or retry_after value. Do not hard-code limits; Discord says they can change.

- Handle per-route, global, and shared-resource limits independently.
- Log 401, 403, and 429 responses and stop retrying authentication or permission failures.
- Remove invalid webhook, endpoint, and payload calls instead of retrying them.
- Discord documents a global bot limit of 50 requests per second and an invalid-request limit of 10,000 invalid requests per 10 minutes for IP-based API restrictions. These are developer/API figures, not ordinary user allowances, and may change.
- Monitor invalid-request volume by IP and application, then contact developer support if normal traffic repeatedly causes broader restrictions.

When to contact Discord Support
Submit a request at https://dis.gd/contact when the restriction remains after the applicable wait or when several Discord features are affected. Include:
- the exact error text and number, if shown;
- the approximate time it began;
- the affected feature (verification, invites, messages, login, or API);
- whether it occurs in the app, browser, or both;
- whether it affects one server or every server;
- whether it occurs on one network or multiple trusted networks; and
- screenshots with personal information, passwords, and authentication tokens redacted.
For a private-server ban, contact that server’s administrators; Discord Support generally cannot reverse a moderator’s server decision.
