Yes, Your Router’s USB Port Can Share a Drive Over Wi-Fi

Yes—if your router’s exact model and firmware support USB storage sharing, you can connect a flash drive or external hard drive and access its files from other devices on your home network. A USB port alone does not guarantee this feature, and the available sharing methods, drive formats, and power requirements vary by model.

What the router’s USB port can do

On supported routers, connected storage can become a shared resource on your local network. Depending on the model, you may be able to browse files using a network-sharing protocol, access them through a router-provided service, or play compatible media through a media server. GL.iNet documents Samba, WebDAV, and DLNA options in its network storage guide; TP-Link documents storage sharing and media features for specific models in its guides for the Archer AX6000 V1 and TL-WR902AC V3.

These options do different jobs. File-sharing methods let compatible clients browse or transfer files; DLNA is for discovering and playing supported media, not general-purpose access to every file. Your client device must support the protocol the router provides.

Check compatibility before connecting or reformatting a drive

Start with the manual for your exact router model and hardware revision. Some routers with USB ports do not support storage sharing, and similarly named models or firmware versions may differ. TP-Link’s support guidance also notes that storage sharing and external-enclosure compatibility are not guaranteed for every model; see TP-Link support.

  • Storage support: Confirm the manual explicitly describes USB storage sharing or a media-server feature, rather than merely listing a USB port.
  • File system: Check which formats the router recognizes before changing a drive. For example, TP-Link’s Archer AX6000 V1 guide lists FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ for its described USB hard-drive use, while the TL-WR902AC V3 guide lists FAT32 and NTFS. Those examples are not universal compatibility rules.
  • Power: Some external hard drives need more power than the router’s USB port can provide. GL.iNet warns that drive power consumption can cause malfunction; TP-Link’s guides advise using the drive’s supplied external power when required.
  • Access method: Check which protocols the router supports and whether your computer, phone, or media player can use them.
  • Enclosure compatibility: If the drive is inside a USB enclosure, confirm that the router supports it; a compatible file system alone does not ensure the enclosure will work.

Set up local access over Wi-Fi

  1. Verify the router guide. Find the exact model and revision in its manual or manufacturer support page, then confirm storage sharing, supported formats, and any power requirements.
  2. Prepare the drive. Check its current file system against the manual. Do not reformat it unless necessary and only after confirming the router supports the intended format; reformatting can erase data.
  3. Connect and enable sharing. Attach the drive, allow the router time to recognize it, and enable the documented USB-sharing or media-server setting in that model’s interface. Labels and menus differ between routers.
  4. Connect from another device on your home network. Use the address and access method specified by the router. Choose SMB/Samba, FTP, WebDAV, or a media-client route only if that model supports it. The required address and sign-in details are model-specific.
  5. Eject it through the router before unplugging. Use the interface’s eject, disconnect, or safe-removal control to reduce the risk of data damage. TP-Link’s model guides describe safe removal for supported storage.

Local sharing is not the same as remote access

Accessing a drive while connected to your home Wi-Fi does not automatically make it available over the internet. Remote access is model-dependent and may require separate configuration. For example, NETGEAR’s Nighthawk ReadySHARE settings guide says HTTPS and FTP access over the internet are disabled by default for the described product family; consult NETGEAR’s instructions for those settings. Do not assume the same defaults or controls apply to another router.

Before enabling any internet-facing access, check the router’s documentation and available access controls. If you only need files at home, keep access local rather than enabling a remote service you do not need.

When router storage is—and is not—a good fit

A router-shared drive can be a convenient way to make files or media available to several devices without plugging the drive into each one. Its suitability depends on the router’s support, drive compatibility, client protocols, and power needs. The cited manufacturer documentation does not establish a general transfer-speed figure, so it cannot show that router sharing will match a dedicated storage device or handle demanding workloads. For a speed-sensitive use, look for performance information for the specific hardware rather than relying on the presence of a USB port.
