Laboratory experiments show that a single layer of molybdenum diselenide (MoSe₂) can function as an electrically tunable, narrow-band mirror. A gate voltage changes the monolayer’s charge density, altering its exciton resonance and therefore the amount of light it reflects. “On and off” describes a large change at a selected resonant wavelength—not a broadband household mirror that becomes perfectly reflective or perfectly transparent.
What the atomically thin mirror actually does
The active material is a monolayer of MoSe₂, only one crystal layer thick. In the reported devices, it is placed in a gated heterostructure so that an applied voltage can add or remove charge carriers. That electrical control changes the optical response of the layer at its exciton resonance.

An exciton is a bound state formed when light promotes an electron and leaves a positively charged hole behind. At the right wavelength, incident light drives these excitons. They then re-radiate light; the backward-radiated field can interfere constructively with the incoming reflection, producing a strong reflected beam. The mirror effect is therefore resonant and selective rather than broadband.
The phrase “turned on and off” is a convenient shorthand for changing the reflected signal substantially between voltage states. The size of that change depends on wavelength, temperature, encapsulation, gate design, optical alignment and the metric being reported. The experiments do not show a perfect 0-to-100-percent optical switch under every condition.

How voltage switches the reflection
- Apply a gate voltage. Electrodes above or below the MoSe₂ create an electric field across the heterostructure.
- Change the charge density. The field alters the number of electrons or holes in the monolayer.
- Modify the exciton response. Added carriers change how strongly the excitonic transition absorbs and re-radiates light.
- Change interference at resonance. Because the exciton-generated field contributes to the reflected field, its changed amplitude and phase alter the measured reflection.
- Toggle between voltage states. Repeating the gate-voltage change produces electrically controlled optical modulation at the selected resonance.
The mechanism is described in the original electrically tunable mirror report by Back and colleagues, which states that applying a gate voltage “drastically” modifies reflectivity by changing monolayer charge density: Physical Review Letters study indexed by PubMed. An APS Physics explanation describes the same process as resonant excitation followed by backward emission that interferes constructively with the incident reflection: APS Physics overview.
What the 2018 experiments measured
Two independent 2018 studies demonstrated strong electrical control, but their numbers are not interchangeable. They used different sample structures and reported different optical quantities.
| Study | Device and conditions | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back and colleagues (2018) | Charge-controlled MoSe₂ monolayer heterostructure; response tested over incident intensities up to 400 W/cm² | 87% extinction; maximum reflection coefficient of 41% | Extinction and reflection coefficient are separate measurements. The 87% extinction value is not an 87% reflectance figure. |
| Scuri and colleagues (2018) | MoSe₂ monolayer encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), operated at cryogenic temperature at the excitonic resonance | Up to 85% reflectance | This high reflectance applies to that encapsulated, cryogenic resonant device; it should not be generalized to room temperature or arbitrary thin films. |
The hBN-encapsulated paper states: “We demonstrate that a single layer of MoSe₂ encapsulated by hexagonal boron nitride can act as an electrically switchable mirror at cryogenic temperatures, reflecting up to 85% of incident light at the excitonic resonance.” Read the full report in Physical Review Letters.

The APS summary reports that toggling voltage changed reflectivity by more than a factor of two across the two studies. That summary is useful for conveying the switching contrast, but it does not replace the individual papers’ definitions, sample details or measurement conditions.
Why a one-layer crystal can reflect light
Ordinary mirrors rely on a thick metal coating or many dielectric layers to create a large optical response. A monolayer has far less material, but its excitons can couple very strongly to light at a sharply defined energy. At that energy, the sheet’s re-radiated field is coherent with the incident field. The phase relationship, rather than the physical thickness alone, determines whether the outgoing waves reinforce or cancel.
This is why the device is best described as a resonant mirror. Move the laser away from the exciton transition and the reflected signal can fall substantially. The mirror is not intended to reflect every visible or infrared wavelength equally, and a voltage that switches one resonance does not automatically create a broadband optical shutter.

What “on” and “off” mean in practice
It is a contrast between operating states
“On” means the gate is set so the excitonic response produces strong reflection at the measurement wavelength. “Off” means the response is reduced in the other electrical state. Neither word guarantees absolute reflectance values of 100% and 0%. The practical contrast is a function of the chosen wavelength, the optical linewidth, the gate voltage range and losses in the complete stack.
Different metrics answer different questions
- Reflectance is the fraction of incident optical power measured in the reflected beam.
- Reflection coefficient is a coefficient reported by a particular experiment; it must not be silently converted into a reflectance percentage.
- Extinction quantifies how strongly a signal is reduced or removed in the relevant measurement configuration. An extinction percentage is not automatically the percentage of light reflected.
Comparing the 41% maximum reflection coefficient in the Back study directly with the 85% reflectance in the Scuri study would create a misleading ranking. They differ in metric, encapsulation and temperature.
Device structures behind the demonstrations
Electrically gated MoSe₂
The switching mirror uses a monolayer incorporated into a charge-control structure. Gate electrodes provide the voltage, while surrounding layers protect and stabilize the atomically thin crystal. In the hBN-encapsulated demonstration, hexagonal boron nitride helped form a clean optical environment, but the reported 85% value was obtained at cryogenic temperature and at resonance.

Intensity tolerance in one experiment
Back and colleagues reported that their measured response remained independent of incident intensity up to 400 W/cm². That is a condition of that device and test range, not a universal damage threshold or a promise that every MoSe₂ mirror behaves identically at high optical power.
Temperature is a major condition
The strongest reflectance number—up to 85%—came from a cryogenic hBN-encapsulated sample. Cooling changes linewidths, carrier behavior and exciton stability. A room-temperature implementation would need its own measurement; the cited result does not establish that the same reflectance is available without cooling.
A different approach: moving the mirror instead of changing charge
Not every tunable MoSe₂ optical device uses electrical charge switching. A 2020 study suspended a MoSe₂ heterostructure above a metallic mirror and reversibly changed the separation between them. Altering that gap changes exciton–photon coupling through the optical interference environment. It is an electromechanical modulation method, not the same mechanism as changing charge density with a gate.

The distinction matters when evaluating speed, wiring, reliability and achievable optical contrast. The spacing-controlled architecture demonstrates another way to tune excitonic behavior, but it should not be cited as evidence that the electrically gated mirror works by physically moving its monolayer. A 2022 Nature Communications study extended the idea of electrically controlling an atomically thin optical element. Its MoSe₂ device used graphene split gates to create a tunable phase profile, allowing the reflected beam to be steered. The reported architecture covered a 10° beam-deflection range and reached switching times down to 1.6 ns.
Those figures describe phase control and beam steering in that particular split-gate reflector. They are not a universal switching speed or deflection range for every voltage-tunable mirror, and they do not change the narrow-band nature of the original resonant mirror demonstrations. The study is available at Nature Communications.

What this means for real-world use
It is a research device, not a consumer mirror
The cited papers demonstrate laboratory prototypes. They do not establish a commercially available, plug-in atomically thin mirror, a market price, a standard room-temperature product or broad deployment in consumer displays. Building a practical system would require the crystal, gates, contacts, encapsulation, optical alignment and control electronics to operate together reliably.
Applications must match the narrow bandwidth
A resonant reflector could be useful where a system needs selective control of a known optical transition: for example, experiments in quantum optics, tunable photonics or wavelength-specific beam shaping. The evidence supports those as technology directions, not as proof of a finished product or a particular commercial performance.
Integration is the engineering challenge
- The optical source must be aligned with the MoSe₂ exciton resonance.
- The gate stack must supply the required carrier-density change without degrading the monolayer.
- Encapsulation and interfaces must preserve optical quality and electrical access.
- Cooling may be necessary for the highest reported reflectance.
- For beam steering, patterned gates and phase control add complexity beyond a simple two-state mirror.
Questions to ask when you see a “switchable atom-thin mirror” claim
- Which material and structure? Confirm that the claim concerns monolayer MoSe₂ and identify any hBN encapsulation, metallic mirror or graphene gates.
- Which optical metric? Check whether the number is reflectance, reflection coefficient, extinction or another quantity.
- At what wavelength? A resonant result applies near the exciton transition, not necessarily across the visible spectrum.
- At what temperature? Record whether the measurement was cryogenic, room temperature or unspecified.
- What function was demonstrated? Distinguish simple reflectivity modulation from electromechanical coupling control or beam steering.
- Was switching speed directly measured? The 1.6 ns figure belongs to the 2022 split-gate beam-steering architecture; it should not be assigned to every electrically gated mirror.
The bottom line
A monolayer can act as a voltage-controlled mirror because its excitons provide a strong, coherent optical resonance. Changing the MoSe₂ charge density changes that resonance and the reflected light, producing a substantial two-state contrast in laboratory devices. The clearest demonstrations reported a 41% maximum reflection coefficient in one charge-controlled heterostructure and up to 85% reflectance in a separate hBN-encapsulated sample at cryogenic temperature. These are narrow-band, condition-dependent research results—not evidence of a broadband, room-temperature consumer mirror.
