DaVinci Resolve is used in professional Hollywood-linked productions, including a documented feature-film edit. The strongest evidence also points to color grading and finishing as established uses. That does not mean Resolve is the default editing system across Hollywood: the available examples show where it has been used, not how often every production chooses it.
Documented feature-film editing in Resolve
Blackmagic Design reported that Gregg Araki and coeditor Victor De La Parra used Resolve Studio and Blackmagic Cloud for the full edit of I Want Your Sex, a 2026 Sundance release. This is a specific example of Resolve being used as an editing system on a feature, rather than only for color work. Because the account comes from the software’s manufacturer, it documents the named workflow but is not an independent survey of industry adoption. Blackmagic Design’s Sundance announcement.

The same announcement describes Resolve Studio use on other Sundance projects, including creating color looks for Buddy. A production may use different applications at different stages, so a tool used on a film is not necessarily the tool used for its entire edit.

A 2017 Blackmagic Design announcement hosted by the Hollywood Professional Association reported that approximately 85 percent of more than 140 over-the-air, streaming, and cable series and shows posting at Deluxe’s Encore, Level 3, Company 3, and EFilm facilities used Resolve Studio for color grading. The announcement said some of those shows also used Resolve for conforming. This is a historical, vendor-reported figure limited to those facilities and productions; it is not a current, independently audited share of Hollywood work. The HPA-hosted announcement.

- Designed for DaVinci Resolve 16
- Integrated search wheel integrated directly into the keyboard
The announcement also identifies Resolve Studio as part of online editing and color-grading work at Los Angeles post-production company The Loft Post. It names on-set DIT use on series such as Designated Survivor and Kevin Can Wait. Those examples describe particular roles and workflows—not necessarily the shows’ final editorial systems.
Why “used in Hollywood” needs a little context
Post-production is not one task. Offline editing, on-set media management, conforming, color grading, visual effects, and audio post can involve different people, facilities, and software. Evidence that Resolve handled a film’s full edit establishes that such editing happens; evidence that a post facility used it for grading establishes a different role. Neither, by itself, shows that most productions use it for every stage.

The sources cited here establish named examples, not a current market-share ranking or a comparison showing which editing application is most common across Hollywood. Blackmagic’s description of Resolve as “Hollywood’s most popular” is promotional wording, not a measured industry statistic. A reader asking why Resolve is “not used” as a Hollywood video editor is starting from too broad a premise: it is used, but the evidence does not support treating it as the universal or default choice.

Resolve combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production tools in one application. That breadth can support a connected post workflow, but it does not mean every production uses every part of the software.

No. Blackmagic Design lists the Resolve Speed Editor as an optional editing keyboard with a large search dial, dedicated editing keys, and Bluetooth connectivity. It is relevant if you prefer physical controls; it is not a requirement for using Resolve. See the official Speed Editor product page for its listed features.
