Yes, Cricket Uses VoLTE: How HD Voice and Phone Compatibility Work

Yes. Cricket Wireless carries HD Voice calls over its 4G LTE network with VoLTE (Voice over LTE). “HD Voice” is Cricket’s customer-facing name for the service; VoLTE is the underlying technology. Whether your own phone can use it depends on Cricket’s device, unlock, plan and network-compatibility requirements.

What VoLTE means on Cricket

VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE. Instead of switching a phone call to an older voice network, the call travels as voice traffic across a 4G LTE connection. Cricket describes HD Voice as audio sent over its 4G LTE network using VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology on its HD Voice support page.

That creates two terms for the same customer experience. You may see “HD Voice” in Cricket’s help pages or account material and “VoLTE” in a phone’s settings or technical specifications. The label does not mean every phone that supports VoLTE on another carrier will automatically work on Cricket. Cricket requires an eligible device to be HD Voice capable and compatible with the Cricket HD Voice network.

Why Cricket’s 3G retirement makes compatibility essential

Cricket says it retired its 3G service in February 2022. After that shutdown, a phone needs a compatible HD Voice implementation to remain usable on the network; an older handset that depended on 3G voice cannot be made compatible simply by inserting a current SIM. Cricket’s explanation of the retirement and device requirement is available in its 3G Network Shutdown notice.

The practical result is that “this phone has LTE” is not a sufficient test. LTE data support, a 5G badge or a generic manufacturer statement about VoLTE does not establish that Cricket has approved the exact device variant. Cricket’s network configuration, software, frequency support and provisioning all matter to the eligibility decision.

The requirements a Cricket phone must meet

Requirement What it means for you Where to verify it
HD Voice capability The handset must support Cricket’s HD Voice service, which uses VoLTE for calls. Cricket’s HD Voice guidance and the device eligibility result.
Cricket network compatibility The exact phone, including its model and software configuration, must be accepted on Cricket’s HD Voice network. Use Cricket’s IMEI compatibility checker; Cricket calls its online BYOD list partial.
Unlocked status for BYOD A bring-your-own-device phone must be unlocked before activation on Cricket. Confirm with the previous carrier or seller, then run the IMEI check.
Eligible rate plan Cricket requires a compatible rate plan when you activate a BYOD phone. Review the current plan terms during activation; plan details can change.
Current network features VoLTE approval does not automatically include Wi-Fi Calling, 5G or every other feature. Check each feature separately in Cricket’s compatibility information and plan pages.

Cricket identifies the IMEI checker as its most accurate compatibility test. An IMEI is the phone’s unique equipment identifier. Checking it evaluates the actual handset you own, rather than relying on a broad model name, an old compatibility list or a seller’s generic “unlocked” description.

How to check a BYOD phone before activation

  1. Find the IMEI. Open the phone’s settings and look for the device information section, or use the handset’s standard IMEI display method. If a dual-SIM phone shows more than one IMEI, use the identifier for the SIM slot you intend to activate.
  2. Open Cricket’s BYOD tool. Go to Cricket’s BYOD Compatibility page and use the IMEI checker. Cricket says the published BYOD list is not complete, so the online result is more reliable than finding or failing to find a model on that list.
  3. Confirm the result for the exact device. A passing result is the relevant evidence for that handset. Do not substitute a result for a different storage size, regional variant, carrier model or second-hand replacement.
  4. Verify the phone is unlocked. Compatibility and unlock status are separate conditions. A phone can technically support Cricket’s network and still be blocked by its former carrier.
  5. Choose an eligible Cricket rate plan. Cricket requires an eligible plan for BYOD activation. Check the plan information shown at the time you activate rather than assuming an older plan or a plan advertised elsewhere still has the same feature set.
  6. Check additional features individually. If you need 5G or Wi-Fi Calling, verify those capabilities separately. Cricket’s device information distinguishes feature support; VoLTE approval alone is not proof of either one.

Cricket’s HD Voice-Capable Phones page lists supported phones sold through Cricket, but the company’s current IMEI result remains the better check for a BYOD purchase. Device eligibility and software requirements can change, and the support pages do not show a publication date for every list.

When a Cricket call receives HD Voice quality

HD Voice is conditional on the complete call path, not just on the phone in your hand. Cricket says both parties need Cricket HD Voice-capable smartphones, and the call must be made and received over Cricket 4G LTE. If either side uses a non-eligible phone, a different network path or a location without the necessary LTE service, the call may not connect as an HD Voice call.

Cricket also warns that congestion can prevent an HD Voice connection. LTE coverage by itself does not mean that every location has total network coverage or that every call will receive the HD Voice treatment. Buildings, local capacity and the other caller’s network situation can affect the result even when the handset is approved.

Cricket lists clearer voice audio, less background noise and the ability to stream at LTE speeds while talking as HD Voice benefits. Those are Cricket’s descriptions of the service, not independent laboratory measurements or a guarantee of a particular call-quality improvement in every location.

VoLTE, 5G and Wi-Fi Calling are different checks

Feature What it describes What you should not assume
VoLTE / HD Voice Voice calls carried over Cricket’s 4G LTE network. It does not by itself prove 5G or Wi-Fi Calling support.
5G Access to a newer mobile-data radio network where the device, plan and coverage support it. A 5G-branded phone is not automatically a Cricket-compatible VoLTE phone.
Wi-Fi Calling Calling through a Wi-Fi connection when the device and service are provisioned for it. VoLTE approval does not guarantee Wi-Fi Calling.

Cricket’s phone-plan information describes current 5G plan offerings, but plan availability and device support are separate from the VoLTE eligibility decision. When comparing two phones, check the IMEI approval first, then unlocked status, required software version (if Cricket specifies one), and the individual features you actually need.

What happens if you move your SIM

Moving a SIM does not convert an incompatible phone into a compatible one. Cricket advises moving a SIM only to a device that is both HD Voice capable and compatible with its network. Using an ineligible handset can interrupt service, even if the SIM itself is active and the phone displays LTE signal bars.

Before a SIM swap, run the destination phone’s IMEI through Cricket’s checker, confirm that it is unlocked and make sure the account has an eligible rate plan. If the checker rejects the phone, leave the SIM in the known-compatible handset until you have an approved replacement.

Common compatibility problems and the right response

What you observe Likely issue indicated by Cricket’s requirements Next action
The phone has LTE data but calls fail after activation. LTE data capability does not establish HD Voice eligibility; the device may be incompatible or not provisioned. Check the exact IMEI and confirm the phone is unlocked and on an eligible plan.
The handset appears on an older BYOD list, but the checker rejects it. Cricket says the list is partial and device compatibility can change. Use the current IMEI result as the controlling check rather than the old list.
Calls connect but do not show HD Voice behavior. One caller may not have a Cricket HD Voice-capable phone, the call may not be using Cricket LTE, or congestion may be preventing HD Voice. Test with another eligible Cricket handset and connection, recognizing that congestion can still affect the outcome.
A SIM swap causes service interruption. The destination phone may not be both HD Voice capable and network compatible. Return the SIM to the known-compatible phone and verify the replacement by IMEI before trying again.
A phone supports VoLTE elsewhere but is refused by Cricket. Carrier compatibility is device- and network-specific; general VoLTE support is not a guarantee. Use Cricket’s IMEI checker and, if necessary, choose a model Cricket identifies as compatible.

How to choose a replacement phone safely

If you are shopping for a phone, the useful search phrase is “Cricket-compatible VoLTE phone,” but treat it as a starting point rather than proof. Before paying, obtain the exact model and IMEI and run that IMEI through Cricket’s current checker. This is especially important for imported variants, used phones, refurbished units and devices originally sold by another carrier.

Cricket’s own supported-phone list can help you identify models sold for its service, yet lists can become stale and do not replace an IMEI check. Confirm that the phone is unlocked if you are bringing it from elsewhere, and verify separate support for 5G or Wi-Fi Calling if either feature is important to you.

What Cricket has—and has not—claimed about performance

Cricket’s support material explains the technology and conditions for HD Voice, but the official pages reviewed do not provide a dated statistic for VoLTE adoption, a measured average call-quality score or a named-person quotation. No independent test result should be inferred from Cricket’s feature descriptions.

The firm’s terminology is nevertheless clear: “HD Voice” is the service label, VoLTE is the LTE voice technology, and the service depends on an eligible phone, Cricket LTE coverage and the other caller’s compatible path. Because device lists, software requirements, plans and coverage can change, use the current Cricket pages and IMEI checker when you activate or replace a handset.

Bottom line

Cricket does use VoLTE for its HD Voice service. The decisive question for a particular phone is not whether its specifications mention VoLTE, but whether Cricket’s current IMEI checker approves that exact unlocked device for an eligible plan. Once both callers have compatible HD Voice phones and the call is carried over Cricket LTE, HD Voice may be available; congestion and coverage conditions can still prevent it.
