Yemen’s Army Says 1,540 Houthis Were Killed or Wounded in 24 Hours

Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces say 1,540 Houthi fighters were killed or wounded during 474 military operations in the preceding 24 hours. The figure is an army claim, not an independently confirmed casualty count. The latest reports, published on 3 October 2026, identify Taiz as the main focus of the claimed casualties.

What Yemen’s army reported

Military spokesman Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili said the forces carried out 474 operations over the preceding 24 hours and claimed 1,540 Houthi fighters were killed or wounded. Anadolu reported the precise figures; Al Jazeera summarized the operations as “nearly 500.” The army said most of the claimed casualties were on Taiz fronts.

The army statement, as reported, listed warplanes, drones, artillery, missiles and rocket launchers among the means used. The spokesman did not mention casualties among government forces. Neither point establishes the scale or outcome of the fighting independently.

Is the 1,540 figure verified?

No independent confirmation of the 1,540 total appears in the reports reviewed. Al Jazeera and Anadolu report the army’s statement; Anadolu’s account supports the attribution and wording of that claim, but does not independently establish the toll. Reuters and the Associated Press report other fighting in Taiz, not verification of this figure.

Keep the distinction in mind: the army’s number combines people it said were killed or wounded. It is not a claim that 1,540 people were killed, and it should not be presented as a confirmed count.

Why Taiz is central to the reports

Al Jazeera reported that the government closed the al-Houban crossing, which connects Houthi-held al-Houban with government-held Taiz city. Army media official Ammar al-Sami’i said the closure was a security measure following an alleged Houthi infiltration attempt, nearby attacks and a wider military buildup. These are officials’ explanations, not independently established findings.

The report said the crossing had been closed for nine years and reopened to civilians in 2024 for humanitarian reasons. Its current access status may change quickly, so those details should not be treated as a live crossing update.

Separate reports describe renewed fighting around Taiz amid a fragile truce established in 2022. Reuters reported a government military spokesperson’s claim of 20 air strikes in Taiz over three hours. AP reported clashes in residential neighborhoods in eastern Taiz on 1 October. Those accounts make Taiz a focal area in the reporting, but they do not independently confirm the army’s casualty claim or establish battlefield success for either side.

Other casualty figures are not directly comparable

AP reported World Health Organization figures of 164 deaths and 645 injuries from 19 September through the date of its report, and 4,481 overall casualties since 6 August. Those totals cover different periods and are separate from the army’s 24-hour claim; they should not be added to it or used as a check on it.

Sources and reporting date

The figures and developments above were reported on 3 October 2026. The central 1,540 figure comes from Yemen’s army as reported by Al Jazeera and Anadolu. Separate reporting on the Taiz strikes and clashes appeared at Reuters and the Associated Press. These outlets report claims and events; their separate accounts do not establish the army’s casualty total.
