The animal ran into the truck anyway, denting its hood, according to a report published by Cowboy State Daily. The driver was not reported injured.
What happened near Mud Volcano
The encounter occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on October 8, 2026, as the seasonal employee was driving south from Canyon Village toward Fishing Bridge. Near Mud Volcano, he saw a bull bison in the road and stopped, leaving pavement between the animal and the truck.

Stephen Borgmier, manager of a Yellowstone Park Service Station, told Cowboy State Daily that the bison first appeared calm, then ran toward the Chevrolet S-10 and struck its left side with its head. The report says the impact left a sizeable dent in the hood, while the headlight was undamaged. The driver was not reported hurt, and the bison ran off. The encounter was captured by the truck’s dashcam, according to the report.
Why did the bison hit the truck?
The reason is not established. The report describes the animal’s approach and impact but does not explain its motivation. Nor does the available reporting establish an official National Park Service finding about this specific collision.

What should drivers do when bison are on a Yellowstone road?
Yellowstone’s National Park Service guidance is to wait for bison to move along. Drivers should not honk or drive aggressively toward them. Stopping rather than trying to force a way past the animal is consistent with that general guidance, but the NPS has not publicly commented on this particular incident.
The NPS also tells visitors to stay at least 25 yards from bison and other large animals. If wildlife approaches, move away to maintain that distance. As the agency put it in a June 26, 2026 release: “Never approach, touch, feed or crowd wildlife, even if an animal appears calm.”

That distance matters even when an animal seems unbothered: the NPS says bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal and can run three times faster than humans. On the road, give them time and space to leave rather than trying to predict whether a seemingly calm animal will stay put.
