Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves as the San Jose Sharks opened their 2026-27 season with a 4-3 overtime win over the Florida Panthers on October 1, 2026. Luca Cagnoni scored his first NHL goal at 3:14 of overtime to finish a game in which San Jose’s three-goal lead disappeared in the third period.
How Askarov played in the opener
The Sharks’ goalie made 23 saves, according to the NHL.com game recap. CBS Sports/RotoWire reported that Askarov stopped 23 of 26 shots in its player report. The reports use distinct descriptions: the NHL recap gives his save total, while CBS Sports/RotoWire also states the shots-faced denominator.
The win came amid questions about how San Jose would divide starts between Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic. In its September 21, 2026 preview, NHL.com described both as options in a goaltending timeshare and said Askarov could emerge as the No. 1. CBS Sports/RotoWire also suggested he might have a slight edge in starts if he played well. One opener is not enough to establish how the Sharks will distribute starts over the season.
How the Sharks won
San Jose built a 3-0 lead, but Florida rallied in the third period. Eetu Luostarinen scored twice, and Matthew Tkachuk tied the game 17 seconds after Luostarinen’s second goal, forcing overtime.

At 3:14 of overtime, Will Smith carried the puck into Florida’s zone and passed across to Cagnoni, who scored from the left circle. It was Cagnoni’s first NHL goal in his 10th game. Smith had two goals of his own and assisted on the winner; Macklin Celebrini recorded three assists, and Mason Marchment scored in his Sharks debut. The NHL.com recap has the full game account.
