Yann LeCun Said Elon Musk Was Lying About Tesla’s Self-Driving Claims. Here’s What the Evidence Shows

Yann LeCun—not Geoffrey Hinton—was the AI researcher who accused Elon Musk of “lying” about Tesla’s self-driving and robotaxi claims. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Musk made repeated, aggressive autonomy forecasts that were missed or delayed. It does not, by itself, prove what Musk privately knew or whether every prediction was deliberately deceptive.

Tesla’s current consumer product also matters. Tesla calls it Full Self-Driving (Supervised), says it is not autonomous, and requires an attentive human driver who remains responsible for control.

Who called Elon Musk a liar?

The accusation came from Yann LeCun, an influential AI researcher and Meta chief AI scientist at the time. LeCun is sometimes described as a “Godfather of AI,” but that nickname is also widely associated with Geoffrey Hinton. The headline should not be read as identifying Hinton.

LeCun’s comments appeared during a broader dispute about Musk’s long-running claims for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software and planned robotaxi service. In the account published by CleanTechnica, LeCun later said he did not hate Musk but objected to what he regarded as repeated lies.

What LeCun was criticizing

LeCun was addressing a pattern, not one isolated software error. Musk repeatedly forecast that Tesla vehicles would soon achieve capabilities such as:

  • Full autonomous driving without an attentive driver.
  • Driverless robotaxi operation.
  • Major journeys completed without human control.
  • Commercial autonomous ride-hailing within short timeframes.

The critical distinction is between a technical demonstration, a supervised driver-assistance feature, a limited pilot and a generally available driverless service. Those are not interchangeable promises.

What Musk’s forecast record shows

Public coverage identifies years of near-term predictions—often framed as “next year,” “by the end of the year” or similar deadlines—about autonomous Tesla operation and robotaxis. Those deadlines passed without a broadly available, unsupervised consumer robotaxi fleet. The scope of individual statements varied, so each claim must be judged against its exact wording and promised deadline rather than treated as one identical promise.

Question What the public record supports What it does not establish
Was a near-term autonomy forecast made? Yes. Musk made repeated short-term predictions about increasingly autonomous Tesla driving and robotaxis. That every prediction promised the same capability or deployment scope.
Were the deadlines met? Many were missed, delayed or narrowed into supervised features or future plans. That a missed deadline proves intentional deception.
Is a consumer driverless Tesla robotaxi fleet broadly available? No evidence in the cited material establishes such a general rollout. That no limited demonstration or pilot could exist.

A missed forecast proves that the forecast was wrong. Calling it a lie requires evidence about intent: what the speaker knew, believed and intended when making the statement.

What Tesla’s FSD product does today

As of the Tesla support page dated August 18, 2026, the product is named Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla says it can drive on many roads and perform functions including:

  • Navigation on residential and city streets.
  • Lane changes and selection of highway or intersection forks.
  • Left and right turns.
  • Routing around vehicles and objects.
  • Other driving and parking maneuvers, depending on vehicle, hardware, software version and region.

Tesla also states plainly that the system does not make the vehicle autonomous, does not replace the driver and requires a fully attentive driver who remains responsible for speed and control. The current U.S. subscription price shown by Tesla was $99 per month on August 18, 2026; Tesla says pricing and availability may change. Details are on Tesla’s FSD support page.

How supervision works

Tesla’s instructions say the feature is enabled through Controls → Self-Driving → Full Self-Driving (Supervised), after which the driver taps “Start Self-Driving” when available. Braking, manual steering and specified controls disengage it. These controls do not transfer legal or operational responsibility to the software.

Tesla’s Model S owner’s manual warns that drivers cannot assume when the system will stop or continue through an intersection and must remain ready to act immediately.

Why “Full Self-Driving” is confusing

“Full Self-Driving” is a marketing name. “Supervised” describes the current operating requirement. A true driverless system would complete the driving task without an attentive fallback driver, within a defined operating domain and under applicable regulatory authorization.

NHTSA describes Tesla FSD as SAE Level 2 partial automation. Level 2 systems can control steering and speed in some conditions, but the human driver must continuously supervise them. A driver cannot legally or safely treat present-day FSD as a chauffeur.

What NHTSA is investigating

On October 7, 2025, NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25012. Its opening resume says the agency was examining reports that FSD:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Entered intersections against red lights or failed to remain stopped.
  • Displayed or interpreted traffic signals incorrectly.
  • Crossed double-yellow lines or entered opposing lanes.
  • Attempted turns onto roads in the wrong direction.
  • Selected incorrect lanes at intersections.
  • Gave drivers too little warning or intervention time.

The resume identified 18 complaints and one media report involving alleged signal violations, plus six Standing General Order reports involving vehicles entering intersections against red lights and later crashing. Four of those crashes reportedly involved injuries. The document is available from NHTSA.

This is a preliminary evaluation, not a final finding that Tesla violated the law or that FSD is defective. It is an investigation into the incidents’ scope, frequency, safety consequences, warnings and whether driver supervision is adequate.

What Tesla’s safety statistics do—and do not—show

Tesla reports that vehicles using FSD (Supervised) experience fewer collisions than its stated comparison group, including “7x fewer” major and minor collisions and “5x fewer” off-highway collisions. Those are Tesla’s own telemetry-based comparisons, not an independent finding that FSD is universally safer.

Tesla counts a crash as involving FSD when the system was engaged at any point in the preceding five seconds and does not assign fault in the comparison. Road type, weather, geography, driver selection, vehicle use, disengagement behavior and crash severity can differ between groups. Tesla acknowledges assumptions and limitations in its Vehicle Safety Report.

The fair reading is that Tesla reports favorable results under its methodology, while regulators and analysts can reasonably ask whether the comparison fully accounts for exposure and other confounding factors.

Is Elon Musk actually lying?

Supported by the evidence: Musk made repeated, highly optimistic autonomy and robotaxi predictions, and many timelines were missed, delayed or narrowed.

Not established by missed deadlines alone: whether Musk knowingly made false statements or intended to deceive buyers on each occasion.

What Tesla currently acknowledges: FSD (Supervised) is driver assistance, not autonomous driving, and the human driver must remain attentive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most precise wording is therefore: Yann LeCun accused Musk of lying after years of overoptimistic and unfulfilled autonomy claims; the public evidence demonstrates inaccurate or delayed forecasts, not a definitive finding about Musk’s intent.

What this means for owners and shoppers

  • Do not treat FSD (Supervised) as a driverless system or a substitute for a licensed driver.
  • Remain attentive at intersections, during lane changes and wherever road markings or traffic controls are unusual.
  • Expect capability and availability to vary by model, hardware, model year, software version, region and regulatory approval.
  • Judge a $99 monthly subscription by the supervised features available now, not by future robotaxi promises.
  • Eligible buyers should check Tesla’s new-owner trial terms before ordering; eligibility and conditions vary.

A robotaxi service would require no attentive in-vehicle driver (or a legally recognized remote-supervision model), a defined operating domain, validated responses to unusual hazards, regulatory authorization, fleet monitoring and fallback procedures. A supervised consumer feature—even one that handles long stretches of a trip—does not meet that definition.
