Short answer: Google Drive is the better general-purpose choice if you already use Gmail or Google Photos, need document collaboration with Viewer, Commenter, and Editor roles, or want a large ecosystem. Yandex Disk is compelling when folder-level View/Edit sharing, generous participant limits, and Yandex-specific link controls fit your workflow. Neither service is established by the cited materials as offering end-to-end encryption, so the more private choice depends on your sharing settings, account type, and threat model—not a blanket security label.
What the comparison actually comes down to
Yandex Disk and Google Drive both provide cloud file storage, synchronization, link sharing, and collaborative folders. The practical differences are in how storage is pooled, how permissions are expressed, who can open a link, what recipients can learn about the owner, and what each provider’s policies say about support access and data processing.

Use this decision order:
- Check how much free space you need and whether mail, photos, and files draw from one quota.
- Match the sharing model to your work: simple folder View/Edit access or more granular Viewer/Commenter/Editor roles.
- Check whether recipients must sign in, whether your identity is exposed, and whether link expiry is available on your account.
- Read the privacy disclosures against your own threat model. Encryption during transfer is not the same as end-to-end encryption.
- Verify the current plan page and checkout for your country before paying. Prices, currencies, promotions, family options, and benefits vary by market and date.
Storage and quotas
Google Drive: one Google One quota for Drive, Gmail, and Photos
Google’s Google One page, accessed on October 13, 2026, says a Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage. That allowance is shared by Google Drive files, Gmail messages and attachments, and Google Photos content rather than being three separate pools. A large photo library or years of email can therefore reduce the space available for Drive files.

The same page displayed US-dollar examples of 100 GB for $1.99 per month and 2 TB for $9.99 per month. Those figures describe the page’s US presentation on that date; they are not a universal price list. Your country may show different currency, taxes, billing intervals, promotions, or plan availability. Check the local Google One checkout before treating a price as current.

Yandex Disk: plan benefits vary by market and tier
Yandex 360 plan documentation describes paid benefits that can include additional Disk storage, automatic phone photo and video upload to unlimited storage under applicable plans, a maximum upload size increased from 1 GB to 50 GB, file-history retention extended from 14 to 90 days, and extra public-link controls such as expiration dates or disabling downloads. These are plan benefits, not guarantees for every Yandex account. The applicable country, plan, and billing terms determine which features you receive.
Yandex’s official pages have shown both Russian-ruble values and a separate English presentation with dollar values. Some displayed amounts include promotions. Because the evidence is market-specific, a meaningful price-per-terabyte verdict requires checking both providers’ current local plan pages at the time you subscribe.
How shared content affects quotas
Yandex says files in a shared folder count against the owner’s storage, not the invited participants’ quotas. An invitee still needs available space in their own account to upload into that folder. Google Drive’s ordinary shared-file behavior and account storage rules should be checked in the plan and Workspace context you use; the cited comparison materials do not establish one universal quota rule for every Google account type.

Sharing and collaboration
Yandex Disk shared folders
Yandex’s shared-folder model gives an owner two access levels:
- View: a participant can view and download files.
- Edit: a participant can upload, change, and delete files.
An owner can invite up to 200 participants. The model applies at the shared-folder level: Yandex says it does not support custom access for individual files or subfolders inside that shared folder. If a project needs one subfolder hidden from another collaborator, you must reorganize the folder structure or create separate shares.
Because shared-folder contents count against the owner’s storage, the owner should choose the account with enough capacity. Invitees need their own available space when uploading, so an invitation does not remove every storage constraint for contributors.
Google Drive roles
Google Drive documents three common roles:
- Viewer: can open the item and, where downloading is permitted, obtain a copy.
- Commenter: can add comments without changing the underlying file.
- Editor: can make changes and, depending on the item and settings, manage content.
These labels are not perfectly equivalent to Yandex’s View and Edit. Google’s separate Commenter role is useful when someone should give feedback without editing. Yandex’s two-level folder model is simpler but less granular, and its no-custom-access rule for files or subfolders can matter in mixed-permission projects.

Link audiences and sign-in requirements
Google Drive offers Restricted sharing and Anyone with the link. When the latter is enabled, anyone who obtains the link can access the file without signing in. Google also states that the owner’s name and email are visible to people receiving a file link, so a public link is not an anonymous handoff.
Yandex terms describe public access for people who know a link. Yandex may impose restrictions, including requiring authorization, so a link that works without sign-in in one context should not be assumed to behave identically for every file or account.
Expiry and download controls
Yandex plan documentation describes public-link security settings that can include an expiration date and disabling downloads. Confirm that your specific plan includes those controls.
Google says eligible work or school accounts can add an expiration date. That eligibility does not automatically extend to every personal Google Account. If a link must stop working on a specific date, verify the control is present in the account type you administer rather than assuming it is a universal Drive feature.
| Sharing dimension | Yandex Disk | Google Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Folder roles | View or Edit. | Viewer, Commenter, or Editor. |
| Permission granularity | Folder-level model; no custom access for individual files or subfolders within a shared folder. | Three listed roles provide a separate comment-only option; exact controls depend on file and account context. |
| Participant limit | Up to 200 invited participants for a shared folder. | Not stated in the cited materials. |
| Public/link access | Terms describe access for people who know the link, with possible authorization restrictions. | “Anyone with the link” can access when enabled, including without signing in. |
| Owner identity shown | Not established in the cited materials. | Owner’s name and email are visible to people receiving a file link. |
| Link expiry | May be available as a plan security setting; verify your plan. | Available to eligible work or school accounts; do not generalize to all personal accounts. |
| Disable downloads | Described as an available plan link setting; verify your plan. | Not established as a universal setting in the cited materials. |
How to share a folder safely
Yandex Disk workflow
- Create a dedicated folder for the project instead of sharing your entire root directory.
- Open the folder’s sharing controls and invite each participant.
- Assign View to people who only need to read or download, and Edit only to contributors who must upload, modify, or delete.
- Separate sensitive subfolders before inviting people, because Yandex does not provide custom permissions for individual files or subfolders inside a shared folder.
- Review the link-security options on your plan. If available, set an expiration date or disable downloads for public links.
- Tell contributors that uploads can require space in their own accounts even though shared-folder contents are charged to the owner’s quota.
Google Drive workflow
- Place only the intended material in a dedicated folder or file.
- Open Share and add named people when you need identifiable, revocable access.
- Choose Viewer, Commenter, or Editor according to the minimum action required.
- For a link, leave the audience as Restricted unless you deliberately need link access. If you select Anyone with the link, assume the link can be opened without sign-in and that your name and email may be visible to recipients.
- On an eligible work or school account, check whether an expiration date can be added. Do not promise expiry to personal-account recipients unless the control is actually shown.
- After sending, test the link in a private browser window or with a non-owner account to confirm the real audience and download behavior.
Privacy and security: what the policies establish
Encryption claims are limited
Yandex’s security help says information transferred by its application or website is encrypted. Google’s privacy policy describes encryption in transit and account-security controls. Those statements address protection during transfer and related security practices. They do not establish end-to-end encryption for stored Drive or Disk content. Therefore, do not treat either service as a system in which only you hold the keys based on these pages alone.
If your threat model requires that the provider cannot read files, encrypt the files on your own device before uploading and manage the keys separately. That changes convenience: online previews, browser editing, full-text search, and easy collaborative editing may no longer work normally.
Yandex support access and retention statements
Yandex Disk’s terms say technical-support staff may access file attributes such as name, type, and size when processing support requests. The terms state that support staff should not access file contents unless public access to the file has been granted. This is a policy statement about the support process, not an independent security audit.

“Yandex technical support staff may have access to file attributes (name, type, size, etc.) stored by the User on the disk space of Yandex servers for the purposes of processing user requests and providing technical support; however, Yandex technical support staff shall not have access to the content of files unless public access to the file has been granted.”

Yandex’s security help says deleted files generally remain recoverable from Trash for 30 days. It lists exceptions that can include prolonged quota blocking, extended inactivity, terms violations, and deletion of the Yandex ID. Treat Trash as a recovery window, not as a guaranteed permanent archive.
Google policy disclosures
Google’s privacy policy describes several situations in which information may be shared or processed: with your consent, by domain administrators for organizational accounts, by service providers acting under Google’s instructions, and for legal or security reasons. The policy also describes account-security controls, export of account content, and deletion options.
Those disclosures mean a personal Drive account and an organization-managed account have different administrative boundaries. A school or employer administrator may have powers that a personal-account owner does not. The policy does not support saying that every Drive file is inaccessible to Google or that encryption is end-to-end.

Which service is more private?
There is no defensible single winner from these policy statements. “More private” depends on the exposure you are trying to prevent.
If you want links that do not reveal your identity
Google explicitly says the owner’s name and email are visible to people receiving a file link. If that disclosure is unacceptable, avoid public links and use named invitations, or compare Yandex’s actual recipient view before sharing. Yandex’s cited terms do not establish an equivalent identity display, but absence of a statement is not proof that no metadata is shown.
If you need recipients to open a link without an account
Google’s “Anyone with the link” setting is documented to work without sign-in when enabled. Yandex terms describe link-based public access but allow restrictions such as required authorization. Test a Yandex link with an unsigned-out browser before relying on it for external distribution.

If you need automatic link expiry
Yandex documentation describes expiration as a possible plan security setting. Google documents expiration for eligible work or school accounts. In both cases, verify the control in the exact plan and account type you use.
If your concern is provider or administrator access
Google’s policy explicitly discusses service providers, organizational administrators, consent, and legal or security disclosures. Yandex’s terms explicitly discuss support access to file attributes and conditions for content access. Read the policy that matches your account type, and remember that a company-managed account is governed by its administrator as well as by the end-user interface.
If your threat model requires provider-blind storage
Neither cited source establishes end-to-end encryption. Encrypt sensitive files locally before uploading, keep the decryption key separate, and accept that this can reduce previews and collaboration. Cloud-provider privacy settings cannot substitute for client-side key control when that is the requirement.

Backup and recovery considerations
Cloud synchronization is not the same as an independent backup: a deletion, corrupted file, compromised account, or policy action can propagate to synchronized devices. Keep another copy of irreplaceable material. A portable external SSD can serve as an optional local copy, but the drive itself is not a complete backup strategy unless you maintain versions, protect it from loss, and periodically verify that files can be restored.

Decision guide
Choose Google Drive when
- Your household already relies on Gmail or Google Photos and a single pooled quota is convenient.
- You need a Commenter role between read-only and full editing.
- You routinely share with people who should open a link without signing in, and you accept the documented owner-name and email exposure.
- You use an eligible work or school account where link expiration is available.
- You value documented export and deletion controls in Google’s account policy.
Choose Yandex Disk when
- A two-level shared-folder model (View or Edit) is sufficient for your team.
- You need up to 200 participants in a shared folder.
- You want applicable-plan benefits such as larger uploads, longer file history, phone-media upload to unlimited storage, or public-link expiration and download controls.
- You prefer shared-folder contents to count against the owner’s quota rather than invitees’ quotas, while understanding that contributors still need available space to upload.
Use neither service alone for highly sensitive files
- Your requirement is provider-blind, end-to-end encrypted storage.
- You cannot accept any possibility of organizational administrator access.
- You need a legally controlled retention, audit, or data-residency regime that these general consumer pages do not establish.
In those cases, encrypt files before upload, select an account and jurisdiction that meet your governance requirements, and maintain an independent backup.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming “free storage” is file-only space
Google’s 15 GB is shared by Drive, Gmail, and Photos. Check all three services before blaming Drive for a full quota.
Giving Edit access to everyone
On Yandex, Edit permits uploading, changing, and deleting. On Google, Editor is likewise broader than commenting. Start with View or Viewer and upgrade only contributors who need to change files.

Expecting folder-level sharing to protect a sensitive subfolder
Yandex does not support custom access for individual files or subfolders inside a shared folder. Move sensitive material into a separate folder with its own membership.
Treating Trash as permanent backup
Yandex generally keeps deleted files recoverable for 30 days, with listed exceptions. Export important data and retain an independent copy.

Google Drive is the more broadly integrated option, especially for people who already use Gmail and Google Photos or need a Commenter role. Yandex Disk offers a straightforward shared-folder model, a 200-participant limit, and plan-dependent link and history controls that may suit teams with simpler permissions. Privacy is not settled by either brand’s security slogan: check sign-in requirements, recipient identity exposure, expiry controls, administrator access, provider disclosures, and whether you need local encryption before upload.
