Yandex reported serious damage and outages at two data centers in October 2026. But a Cloudflare chart showing automated web requests on Yandex’s network does not show that Russian troll farms or social-media influence accounts went quiet. It measures a different kind of activity, and the available evidence does not establish the claimed connection.
What happened at Yandex’s data centers
In a statement dated October 9, 2026, Yandex said its Sasovo data center was seriously damaged in a drone attack overnight October 7–8 and had been completely shut down. The company also said an attack hit its Kaluga data center that morning, putting part of that infrastructure out of service. Yandex said it was assessing the damage and could not yet say when the equipment would return online. Yandex’s October 9 statement confirms reported infrastructure disruption; it does not describe an effect on social-media influence operations.

What Cloudflare’s “bot traffic” chart measures
Cloudflare Radar’s panel for Yandex’s AS13238 network describes its Bot vs. Human view as the distribution of automated and human HTTP requests to HTML content—in other words, web-page requests associated with that network. It is not a count of social-media accounts, posts, comments, or operators. The AS13238 dashboard uses a changing date window, so a specific figure needs a dated capture and the associated methodology before it can be treated as a stable comparison.

“Bot” is a broad technical category, not a label for political intent. Cloudflare says its bot score estimates how likely a request is to have come from a bot, based on its detection systems and request features; it does not identify political affiliation or purpose. Cloudflare’s bot-score documentation explains that distinction.

YandexBot is a crawler, not a troll-farm account
YandexBot is Yandex’s main indexing robot: software that crawls pages for Yandex search. Cloudflare’s directory categorizes it under Search and identifies Yandex as its operator. That makes it a search crawler, not a synonym for automated social-media accounts. Cloudflare’s YandexBot directory entry describes the crawler.
Several labels that appear in discussions of this claim refer to different things. AS13238 is Yandex’s general network view in the Cloudflare chart; AS200350 refers to YandexCloud; YandexBot is a named crawler. Those measurements cannot be swapped as though they describe one pool of activity. Yandex Metrica’s Robots report is different again: it records robot activity observed through an individual site’s Metrica tag, including counts and declared user-agent names. It is a site-level diagnostic, not a measure of social-media influence activity. Yandex Metrica’s Robots report documentation explains its scope.

Why the chart does not prove the troll-farm claim
A decrease in automated requests from a network could reflect a change in web crawling or other automated web activity. By itself, it cannot show who operated the requests, what they were doing, or whether they were part of a political influence operation. A causal claim would need independent evidence tied to the alleged accounts or operation, along with a defensible comparison before and after the outages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA technical analysis published October 10, 2026, found that the public evidence it reviewed did not establish a comparable fall in AS13238 traffic or YandexBot requests caused by the outages, and did not provide a reliable numerical comparison showing a decline in Russian influence activity. That is an assessment of the sources reviewed at that time, not a permanent finding. The analysis also distinguishes AS13238, YandexCloud’s AS200350, and YandexBot rather than treating them as interchangeable.

A Bluesky post dated October 11, 2026, linked the AS13238 chart while discussing claims that Kremlin-controlled social-media bots or troll farms had gone silent. It shows that the claim circulated; it does not independently verify a traffic trend or its cause. The post should be read in that context.

- Entity: Is the series about an autonomous system (ASN), a cloud network, a named crawler, or a set of social-media accounts?
- Time window: Are the periods before and after the event comparable, with dates and time zone identified?
- Unit and denominator: Is the figure requests, bytes, a share of requests, or account posts? What is the baseline?
- Coverage and method: Which traffic does the measurement include, and how does the provider classify automated requests?
- Connection to the allegation: Is there independent evidence linking the measured traffic to the specific operation being discussed?
A percentage without its underlying series, denominator, baseline, and time window does not establish the size of a change. Even a verified change in web requests would not, on its own, establish that a political operation stopped or that the data-center attacks caused the change.
