Yahoo Mail has three separate controls for unwanted or misrouted email: block a specific address in Settings, mark a message as spam (or not spam), or create a filter to route matching incoming mail. They do different jobs—and Yahoo says spam filtering happens before other filters, so a filter may not catch a message already sent to Spam.
Choose the right Yahoo Mail control
| What you want to do | Use this control | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Stop mail from a particular address | Blocked addresses | Adds that address to a blocking list. |
| Tell Yahoo a received message is junk—or was wrongly classified | Mark as spam / Not spam | Moves the message and informs Yahoo’s spam classification system; Yahoo says the choice affects future delivery from that sender. |
| Sort new incoming mail that matches conditions | Filters | Routes matching messages to a chosen folder or Trash. |
These controls are not interchangeable. Use a block for a named address, a spam report to correct classification, and a filter to organize incoming mail by rules.

Block or unblock an email address
In New Yahoo Mail, open More options, choose Settings, then open Security and Privacy. Add the sender under Blocked addresses and save. To reverse an accidental block, remove the address from that same settings area. Yahoo’s New Yahoo Mail help page documents a limit of up to 1,000 blocked addresses; that is the limit stated on that page, not a promise that the limit will never change: Yahoo Help: Block email addresses in Yahoo Mail.
Blocking is useful when you know the address you want to exclude. If expected mail vanishes, check both blocked addresses and blocked domains: either setting may keep messages out of the Inbox.
Mark spam, or restore a wanted message
Report a message as spam
In New Yahoo Mail, select the unwanted message and choose Mark as spam. Yahoo moves it to Spam and says the report helps its system learn; future messages from that sender are routed to Spam. Yahoo also advises users not to interact with messages in the Spam folder. See Yahoo Help’s New Yahoo Mail spam guidance.
Move a false positive back to Inbox
Open Spam, select the wanted message, and choose Not spam. Yahoo says this returns the message to Inbox and future messages from that sender will be delivered to Inbox. For a trusted mailing-list message, Yahoo may show an Unsubscribe option; it is not available for every sender. Choosing Report as spam instead marks the message as spam and moves it to Spam.
Create and troubleshoot filters
Filters sort matching new incoming messages into a folder or Trash. Yahoo’s New Yahoo Mail troubleshooting guidance states that “All emails go through the spam filter before going through other filters.” That order matters: if Yahoo classifies a message as spam first, a later filter may not route it as expected. The same guidance says newly created filters do not apply to mail already received, so a new rule will not automatically reorganize old messages. See Yahoo Help: Fix problems with Yahoo Mail filters.

Check the rule and its order
- Confirm that the filter’s conditions match the message. Yahoo says a filter uses all rules defined for it; if you need separate matching conditions, you may need separate filters.
- Inspect filters above the one that appears to fail. Yahoo advises checking rule order, using positive criteria rather than negative ones where appropriate, and moving filters up or down to change priority.
- Check the destination folder, including Trash, and remember that rules affect new incoming messages rather than existing mail.
Yahoo also has a separate guide for the old Yahoo Mail for Desktop interface. That legacy guide documents up to 500 filters and top-down priority, with the top filter used when two filters apply to the same message. Do not treat its 500-filter limit as a universal limit for New Yahoo Mail: Yahoo Help: Use filters to organize Yahoo Mail (old desktop version).
Consider your mail client
Filter behavior can affect external clients. Yahoo says POP clients download only Inbox mail, so filtering a message into another folder may mean that client does not download it. Filters work with aliases or disposable addresses, but not third-party mailboxes brought into Yahoo over IMAP. If you use an external mail app, check its own account and sync behavior too.
Find mail that disappeared or went to the wrong place
- Check Spam. If the wanted message is there, select it and choose Not spam.
- Check blocked addresses and domains. Look for a sender or domain added by mistake.
- Review filters and their order. Look for rules that direct mail to another folder or Trash; newly created filters will not sort older messages.
- Check account settings and the sender. If the message is still missing, Yahoo’s missing-mail guidance recommends checking account settings and verifying the sender’s address or account: Yahoo Help: Fix missing emails in Yahoo Mail.
If your Inbox is suddenly flooded with junk
A sudden wave of unwanted messages can be more than an inconvenience: Yahoo warns that spam bombing may be intended to hide important messages or transaction confirmations. Use Yahoo’s spam controls and filters, secure accounts with strong, unique passwords, and check bank or card statements and shopping accounts for transactions you do not recognize. See Yahoo Help: Protect yourself from spam bombing.
