XWorm RAT explained: capabilities, infection methods, and warning signs

XWorm is a Windows remote access trojan (RAT) family that can let an attacker control an infected computer, steal information, monitor activity and install further malware. It is not one fixed program with one universal infection sequence. Microsoft, Malwarebytes and FortiGuard Labs have documented different XWorm samples and campaigns, with delivery files, execution stages, persistence and command-and-control details changing over time.

This distinction matters when you investigate a suspected infection. A missing symptom does not prove a computer is clean, and an indicator seen in one campaign should not be treated as a permanent signature for the whole family. The safest approach is to understand the documented behaviors, isolate a potentially affected device quickly and investigate with current security tools.

What XWorm is and why it matters

XWorm is a remote access trojan family for Microsoft Windows. A RAT gives its operator the ability to issue commands and perform actions on a compromised device, often without the user seeing an obvious window. Microsoft Security Intelligence describes Trojan:MSIL/XWormRAT.A as an actively developed threat that provides extensive control of infected Windows systems. Malwarebytes describes XWorm as malware that began as a malware-as-a-service offering; its code was later leaked and cracked versions became available.

Those descriptions explain why XWorm appears in different campaigns, but they do not establish a prevalence rate or a fixed level of risk for every victim. The operator, build and campaign determine which modules are included and what happens after execution. A sample used only to steal browser credentials may behave differently from one configured for surveillance or ransomware delivery.

Microsoft says XWorm was first identified for sale as malware-as-a-service in mid-2022 and later appeared in cracked versions. That is historical context about how the family was distributed, not a measurement of how many systems are infected.

What attackers may do after compromise

Documented XWorm capabilities span surveillance, theft, remote control and follow-on activity. They are capabilities available to an operator or observed in family documentation, not a promise that every infection performs every action.

Monitor input and copied data

  • Keylogging: recording keystrokes can expose passwords, messages and sensitive work data.
  • Clipboard monitoring or replacement: an operator may read copied text or replace copied payment details and other values.
  • Credential theft: Microsoft lists browser credentials and Discord tokens among targeted data. Stolen credentials can enable account takeover even after the malware is removed.

Watch or control the device

  • Screen capture: screenshots can reveal documents, web sessions and authentication codes displayed on screen.
  • Webcam control: some configurations can access a camera. Unexpected webcam-indicator activity is therefore worth investigating, although an indicator by itself is not proof of XWorm.
  • Remote desktop-style control: Microsoft lists Hidden Virtual Network Computing, which can give an operator an interactive view or control channel.

Damage systems or expand the attack

  • Additional malware: Malwarebytes notes that XWorm can deliver other payloads, including ransomware.
  • DDoS participation: Microsoft lists distributed-denial-of-service functionality among capabilities associated with the MSIL entry.
  • File encryption: some family capabilities include encrypting files, but this is not evidence that every XWorm incident is a ransomware event.

Because a RAT can expose passwords and active sessions, account security is part of incident response. Passwords used on a suspected computer should be changed from a separate, clean device, and multifactor authentication should be enabled wherever possible.

How documented XWorm infections begin

There is no single XWorm infection chain. The examples below show why delivery and execution must be assessed from the evidence on a particular machine.

Documented route Observed delivery and execution What cannot be generalized
Microsoft MSIL entry Phishing messages used ISO or VHD disk images, LNK shortcuts, JavaScript files and password-protected archives. Microsoft also describes ClickFix lures in which a malicious page copies a command to the clipboard and persuades the target to paste and run it. Loaders and multiple stages may try to evade security filters. These are listed delivery examples, not requirements for every XWorm sample.
Microsoft VBS example A malicious VBScript, often distributed as a Windows Script File, downloads another stage, stages files and establishes persistence. The example includes a decoy scheduled task and a registry Run key. The task name, files, registry locations and script behavior belong to that documented variant and may differ elsewhere.
FortiGuard campaign Business-themed phishing emails delivered an Excel add-in. Researchers observed exploitation of CVE-2018-0802 in Microsoft Equation Editor, followed by an HTA download and a .NET module that injected XWorm into a process. The observed payload was XWorm 7.2. The vulnerability and version describe that campaign; XWorm does not inherently require an Excel attachment or CVE-2018-0802.

Phishing attachments and archives

An attachment can hide its intent behind a familiar business context. ISO and VHD files can mount as virtual disks, while LNK shortcuts and script files can launch commands when opened. Password-protected archives may be used to reduce automated inspection. The password, sender identity and file extension should be treated as clues, not assurances of safety.

ClickFix-style social engineering

In the ClickFix pattern documented by Microsoft, the web page does not necessarily exploit the browser. Instead, it puts a command in the clipboard and tells the visitor to paste it into a command shell or another Windows prompt. The user action is the execution step. Any page that asks you to paste an unfamiliar command, especially to “fix” a verification or update problem, should be treated as a potential malware lure.

Script-led execution

In Microsoft’s VBS example, the initial script fetches a later stage rather than containing the complete payload. Multi-stage delivery can make the first file look less suspicious and lets an operator change later components. A script that creates files in user-writable directories or adds auto-start entries deserves investigation even if the visible decoy appears harmless.

Excel exploit chain

FortiGuard’s write-up is a campaign-specific example of a malicious Excel add-in abusing CVE-2018-0802 in Equation Editor. The observed sequence moved from the attachment to an HTA file, then a .NET module and process injection before XWorm 7.2 ran. Keep the chain tied to the campaign: seeing XWorm does not prove that this vulnerability was involved.

Warning signs on a Windows computer

Symptoms are investigation clues, not a diagnostic checklist. XWorm can run silently, and Malwarebytes specifically warns that a user may see no obvious indication.

Security settings that changed without authorization

  • Microsoft Defender protections, exclusions or notifications are disabled or altered.
  • Windows Firewall rules change unexpectedly.
  • User Account Control or related security settings have been tampered with.

Persistence entries you did not create

  • New or modified scheduled tasks, especially tasks that launch from a user-writable directory.
  • Unexpected values under registry Run or RunOnce locations.
  • Unknown folders and files created in profile, temporary or other writable paths.

Processes and resource behavior

  • Unexplained slowdown, high CPU, memory or disk use.
  • Unfamiliar processes or a trusted process behaving unusually.
  • Unexpected activity from wscript.exe, cmd.exe, RegSvcs.exe or a disguised pythonw.exe in the VBS example.

Network and device activity

  • Outbound connections that do not fit the computer’s normal applications or destinations.
  • Unusual network use by script hosts or newly created processes.
  • Webcam-indicator activity when no legitimate application should be using the camera.

Microsoft’s VBS entry includes example network indicators and ports, but those values are campaign-specific and can become stale. Treat them as leads for an incident investigation, not as permanent XWorm-wide indicators. Likewise, a clean-looking desktop, normal speed or absence of a camera light cannot rule out compromise.

How to investigate without making the incident worse

If a device is suspected, avoid experimenting on it as though it were an ordinary troubleshooting problem. Record what you observed, preserve relevant times and filenames, and use a known-clean device for account actions and research.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the scope of the suspicion. Note the message, attachment, website, command, alert, process or setting that triggered concern. Do not open the suspicious file again merely to reproduce the behavior.
  2. Look for persistence clues. Review recently created scheduled tasks, registry Run entries, unknown startup items and files in user-writable directories. Compare them with approved software and normal administrative changes.
  3. Review security and network events. Check Defender and firewall changes, process creation, script-host activity and unexpected outbound connections. A single unfamiliar connection is not conclusive; a pattern tied to a newly launched process is more significant.
  4. Use current security definitions. Run updated antimalware and endpoint scans according to your organization’s incident procedure. Keep the device isolated while scans and collection occur.

Indicators from a public write-up should be matched to dates, file hashes, process ancestry and the specific sample. A scheduled task with a different name or a new command-and-control address may still be related, while an identical-looking filename can belong to legitimate software.

What to do if XWorm infection is suspected

1. Isolate the device immediately

Microsoft’s instruction is: “Immediately disconnect the infected device from all networks, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.” Isolation limits remote control, credential theft and lateral movement. Follow your organization’s incident process if the computer is managed, and do not reconnect it simply because the screen looks normal.

2. Protect accounts from a clean device

From a separate device that is not suspected of infection, change passwords for accounts used on the affected computer. Prioritize email, identity, administrator, financial and password-manager accounts. Enable multifactor authentication and review active sessions or recovery methods where the service provides those controls.

3. Preserve documents carefully

Keep evidence and personal documents separate from executable software. Copying unknown programs, scripts or installers to another computer can spread the problem. If files are encrypted, Microsoft recommends restoring from a clean offline backup only after disinfection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Scan and restore security controls

Use updated antimalware definitions and the incident-specific guidance available from your security team or endpoint provider. Restore Defender, firewall and other protections that were changed, but record their previous state if an investigation is underway. A scan can remove a detected component without proving that every persistence mechanism, stolen credential or unauthorized change has been reversed.

5. Reinstall Windows when trust cannot be restored

Malwarebytes identifies a clean Windows reinstall as the most secure home-remediation approach because other malware or system modifications may have been introduced. For a business device, consult the incident-response owner before wiping it so evidence and legal or regulatory requirements are preserved. Reinstall only after confirming that needed documents are backed up safely and that the rebuilt system will receive updates and restored security policies.

Prevention and hardening measures

  • Reduce risky entry points: block or quarantine dangerous attachment types at mail gateways where business needs allow, and scrutinize ISO, VHD, LNK, script and password-protected archive attachments.
  • Train for social engineering: teach users that a web page asking them to paste a command is not a normal verification step. Verify unexpected business requests through a separate channel.
  • Constrain scripting: enable PowerShell logging, limit unnecessary PowerShell use and restrict script hosts such as Windows Script Host where operationally appropriate.
  • Limit privilege: use standard user accounts for routine work and reserve administrator rights for controlled tasks.
  • Control execution: use application allow-listing or equivalent endpoint controls to prevent unapproved scripts and binaries from running in writable directories.
  • Watch persistence: alert on new scheduled tasks, registry auto-run entries and security-setting changes.
  • Protect important accounts: require multifactor authentication, especially for administrator and other critical accounts.
  • Keep recovery usable: maintain offline or otherwise isolated backups and test restoration before an incident occurs.

How to interpret a XWorm report accurately

When comparing detections, samples or campaign write-ups, separate what the family can do from what one sample actually did. A useful report records:

  • the initial delivery and the user action required;
  • loader and execution stages;
  • persistence locations and mechanisms;
  • data targeted or collected;
  • defense-evasion behavior;
  • command-and-control indicators; and
  • the source date, sample version and confidence level.

Microsoft’s script-led example and FortiGuard’s Excel campaign illustrate why this discipline matters. One uses a VBScript with scheduled-task and Run-key persistence; the other uses a particular exploit chain and observed XWorm 7.2 payload. Neither defines every infection.
