The XTEP 160X 7.0 PRO is a firm, stiff, propulsive carbon-plated racer best suited to runners who want a forceful forefoot toe-off—particularly at faster paces and over half-marathon or marathon distances. Its rigid feel and less protective heel at lower forces make it a less obvious choice for heel strikers or anyone seeking a soft, forgiving daily trainer.
What the 160X 7.0 PRO is designed to do
XTEP positions the 160X 7.0 PRO as a road and track racing shoe for distances from 5K through the marathon. Its materials are identified as an XTEP FIT upper, ACE+ midsole, GT700 carbon-fiber plate infused with PI fiber, and DURA outsole. The product information targets professional and elite runners and also lists asphalt, plastic track, and gravel use. XTEP’s Norway product page and its 2025 corporate announcement describe the design and positioning.

The practical question is not whether the shoe is fast in the abstract, but whether its rigid, direct forefoot and relatively firm ride suit your pace, strike, and preferred feel. The available independent review is a lab review, not evidence that the shoe improves race times or prevents injuries.
How it rides in independent testing
A stiff, responsive forefoot
RTINGS tested a men’s US size 9 pair and describes the forefoot as unusually stiff, with a rocker that turns rebound into a propulsive toe-off. It measured forefoot bending energy return at 73.3% and rated responsiveness 8.5. Those figures belong to RTINGS’ methods and tested pair; they are not predictions of an individual runner’s performance.
#1 Best Overall
- FuelCell midsole foam with approximately 3% bio-based content delivers a propulsive feel to help drive you forward. Bio-based content is made from renewable resources to help reduce our carbon footprint.
- Energy Arc pairs sport-specific carbon fiber plate geometry with strategic midsole voids, designed to increase stored energy to deliver a higher amount of total energy returned
- Angular midsole design reduces weight
- Outsole designed for superior traction
- 4 mm drop; due to variances created during the development and manufacturing processes, all references to 4 mm drop are approximate
The same rigidity that can feel direct and effective at faster paces may feel harsh if you prefer a flexible shoe or a softer transition. RTINGS also found the shoe’s extra bulk more noticeable late in long efforts, even though its cushioning held up over distance in the lab.
Heel cushioning depends on loading
RTINGS found strong forefoot protection across the force levels it tested, but the heel was less protective at lower forces and more effective under moderate and higher forces. Its laboratory cushioning measure changed from 9.27 J at 10 km to 8.97 J at 40 km. These are test results, not a guarantee of how the shoe will feel over your own training or race.

The firm heel and narrow rear led RTINGS to describe the shoe as a better match for forefoot strikers than heel strikers. A runner who lands farther back should pay particular attention to heel comfort and stability when trying it on, rather than assuming that a marathon label means a cushioned ride for every gait.
RTINGS’ scores, in context
RTINGS assigned the shoe scores of 8.3 for energy return, 6.7 for stability, 8.3 for cushioning, 8.5 for responsiveness, and 9.6 for true-to-size fit. These are scores from that publisher’s review system, not universal measures of comfort or suitability.

- Rocker profile for smooth, natural feeling transition from heel to toe, supporting long-distance runners and fans for lightweight running shoes
- Solid rubber outsole
Specifications: why the published numbers differ
The independent review and XTEP’s Norway listing give different weight and stack measurements. The sources do not explain whether the difference comes from sizing, measurement methods, or regional specifications, so treat each set as source-specific rather than combining them into a single definitive specification.
| Measure | RTINGS test pair | XTEP Norway listing |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 226.8 g (8.00 oz), men’s US size 9 pair measured by RTINGS; review updated 2026. Source | 207.4 g; XTEP Norway product listing, with size/measurement basis not stated. Source |
| Heel / forefoot stack | 38.2 mm / 34.2 mm, measured by RTINGS on the tested pair. Source | 39.7 mm / 34.7 mm, as listed by XTEP Norway. Source |
| Heel-to-toe drop | 4.0 mm measured; RTINGS notes the advertised drop is 5.0 mm. Source | 5 mm listed by XTEP Norway. Source |
How it compares with two other racers
In RTINGS’ comparison with the Li-Ning Feidian 6 Elite and Brooks Hyperion Elite 5, the XTEP was the heaviest of the three and had the stiffest rocker and most propulsive forefoot. These are that review’s comparative judgments, and they apply to the models and versions it assessed.
Rank #4
- IncrediRUN foam: Next-generation superfoam cushioning with unheard of levels of energy return.
- Full-length slotted carbon fiber plate: Delivers smooth transitions and explosive propulsion with each stride.
- Featherweight knit and mesh upper: Ultra-breathable and designed for connected performance.
- 4/5 level of cushioning
- 8mm offset / 7oz weight
| Shoe | Weight and ride | Stability and strike fit |
|---|---|---|
| XTEP 160X 7.0 PRO | Heaviest of the three in RTINGS’ comparison; stiffest rocker and most propulsive forefoot. | Firm heel and narrow rear; RTINGS considers it a better match for forefoot strikers. |
| Li-Ning Feidian 6 Elite | RTINGS describes it as more cushioned and energetic than the XTEP. | RTINGS describes it as less stable than the XTEP. |
| Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 | RTINGS describes it as lighter than the XTEP. | RTINGS describes it as having a higher drop and a more heel-biased fit. |
RTINGS says the XTEP 160X 7.0 PRO is better suited to half and full marathons, while XTEP’s 260X 3.0 is more suited to shorter workouts and races. That distinction is useful as a broad model-positioning guide, not a substitute for choosing based on your own fit and pace.
Manufacturer claims versus measured findings
XTEP’s 2025 corporate announcement says the GT700 plate offers an 8% increase in propulsion compared with the previous generation and the upgraded DURA outsole improves slip resistance by 38.5%. These are manufacturer claims; RTINGS’ testing supports describing the shoe as stiff and responsive but does not validate either percentage. XTEP’s announcement also called the ACE+ midsole intended to provide stable performance through a 42-kilometer marathon. That is product positioning, not an independently established guarantee.

Fit, regional listing, and price context
RTINGS reported a true-to-size fit for its tested version, which had one standard width. XTEP Norway also describes the fit as true to size and provides size conversions and a size guide. If you need a particular width, check the exact regional version and the seller’s exchange or return terms before ordering.
At the time of its product listing, XTEP Norway showed a men’s price of NOK 3,699, sizes, delivery in 1–3 business days, free size exchange, and a 30-day return period for unused shoes. These terms are specific to that retailer and market and may change; verify the listing before purchase. Separately, XTEP’s corporate announcement gave a China launch-era retail price of RMB 1,299, not a current global price quote.
