Choose the Xteink X4 Classic if you want the lightest possible dedicated reader, physical page-turn buttons and fewer digital distractions. Choose a small smartphone if you need a larger usable screen, touch controls, reading apps, broad store access, dictionary tools or comfortable reading in the dark. The Classic is remarkably portable, but its 4.3-inch display, limited file support and lack of a front light make it a specialist device rather than a universal phone replacement.
“Xteink Mini Ereader” is a family description, not one exact product. The original X4 and the X4 Classic (also called X4 V2) differ in weight, software observations and hardware details. The specifications and recommendations below identify the generation whenever that distinction matters.

The short answer: decide by reading conditions, not the word “mini”
A dedicated Xteink reader makes the most sense when reading sessions are short, portability is crucial and you actively want to remove notifications and social apps from the experience. The X4 Classic weighs about 68 g and is only 114 × 69 × 4.9 mm, so it can disappear into a pocket or attach to a compatible magnetic accessory. Its E Ink screen is readable in ordinary ambient light and its buttons let you turn pages without touching the display.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A phone remains the better single device for most people who read in varied locations. Its screen normally offers more usable text per page, touch navigation is immediate, reading apps can connect to multiple stores and libraries, and the display can be illuminated for a dark room. You also avoid carrying, charging and protecting a second device.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is not simply E Ink versus OLED or LCD. It is a focused, small, button-operated appliance versus a general-purpose computer that happens to run reading software. Your tolerance for frequent page turns, small text areas, sideloading and a separate light source determines the result.
What the Xteink X4 Classic actually is
The current X4 Classic (X4 V2) is a 4.3-inch E Ink reader rated at 219 PPI. Xteink lists a 920 mAh battery, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, physical controls, no touchscreen and no front light. Storage is supplied as 16 GB and can be expanded to 256 GB with a microSD card. The manufacturer’s specifications and FAQ are on the official X4 Classic product page.
Its software is intentionally constrained. Xteink lists EPUB and TXT support and cautions that MOBI and PDF files may not be fully supported by the firmware. The company recommends converting those files with the official XTEINK app before transferring them. That workflow is manageable for a personal, DRM-free library, but it is less convenient than opening a book directly in a phone app.

X4 Classic specifications versus a small smartphone
| Decision factor | Xteink X4 Classic (X4 V2) | Small smartphone |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 4.3-inch E Ink, 219 PPI | Model-dependent; generally a more flexible screen and layout |
| Dimensions and weight | 114 × 69 × 4.9 mm; about 68 g | Model-dependent and normally heavier than the reader itself |
| Lighting | No front light; requires ambient or external light | Screen can be illuminated for low-light reading, subject to handset and app settings |
| Controls | Physical page-turn controls; no touchscreen | Touch navigation and app controls are standard on most models |
| Storage | 16 GB supplied; microSD expansion listed up to 256 GB | Internal storage and cloud or app libraries vary by model |
| Wireless | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Varies by handset and network configuration |
| Battery claim | 920 mAh; Xteink claims up to 10 days of casual reading | No honest numerical comparison without a named phone and matched test |
| Content handling | EPUB and TXT listed; MOBI and PDF may require conversion | Multiple reading apps, stores and services, depending on platform and rights |
| Distraction profile | Dedicated device without ordinary phone notifications or social apps | Notifications and other apps can interrupt unless you configure them away |
The “up to 10 days” figure is a manufacturer claim for casual reading, not an independently controlled comparison with a phone. Screen brightness, Wi-Fi use, Bluetooth, page-turn frequency and standby behavior all affect real battery life on either device.
How much text fits on the tiny E Ink screen?
The Classic’s main compromise is text capacity. A 4.3-inch panel can show only a small portion of a typical book page at comfortable type sizes. You will turn pages more often than on a phone with a larger display, and considerably more often than on a full-size e-reader. The issue is not resolution alone: 219 PPI keeps characters sharp, but the physical area limits how many lines fit at once.

An independent review of the original X4 describes the screen as usable but says the author would not want to go smaller because of how little text the display can show. That review also reports a basic stock interface and formatting problems on some files. Those observations apply to the tested original X4 and should not be treated as a controlled assessment of every X4 Classic firmware version. The review is available at The eBook Reader Blog.

Before buying, ask yourself whether you are comfortable reading a paragraph or two, pressing a button and continuing. The Classic suits people who value a tiny carry footprint more than uninterrupted page flow. If you prefer seeing a full page, notes, illustrations or dense PDFs, a phone is already the more practical choice.
Lighting and eye comfort
Where the Classic works well
E Ink reflects ambient light rather than shining a panel directly at you. Outdoors or in a normally lit room, the matte page-like appearance can be comfortable, and the absence of phone notifications helps you stay with the book. These are display and attention characteristics, not evidence that E Ink is medically safer for eyes.
Where the Classic fails without preparation
The X4 Classic has no front light. In a dim bedroom, airplane cabin or dark bus, you need a lamp, clip-on light or other external illumination. A phone can be used immediately in those conditions by lowering brightness, enabling a warmer color mode or using an app’s night settings.
Do not confuse the Classic with the X4 Pro. The Pro is a separate 4.3-inch model with a touchscreen, physical buttons, a front light and a 1,100 mAh battery. Those features are not present on the Classic.
Controls, distractions and reading concentration
Why the buttons matter
Physical page-turn buttons are useful when your hands are cold, when you are wearing gloves, or when you want to keep a thumb on the same grip. They also avoid accidental taps caused by touching a small touchscreen. The cost is that you cannot pinch-to-zoom, swipe through menus or tap a word in the ordinary smartphone manner.

Why a phone can be harder to resist
A phone puts mail, messaging, browsers and social feeds beside the book. You can reduce interruptions with Do Not Disturb, a reading focus mode, notification batching or a dedicated profile, but those controls depend on your handset and operating system. The Classic’s advantage is structural: it is a single-purpose reader rather than a phone with distractions waiting one tap away.
A hands-on account published by Tom’s Guide describes using a tiny reader to replace some smartphone scrolling, but that is an individual experience, not a controlled behavioral study. Read it as an example of how a separate device can change habits, not as proof that every reader will read more.
Content, apps and file conversion
Using the Classic with a personal library
- Check that your book is DRM-free and in a format the device handles reliably, such as EPUB or TXT.
- For MOBI or PDF files, follow Xteink’s recommendation to convert them with the official XTEINK app before transfer.
- Copy the converted file to the reader’s storage or microSD card and eject the card safely before opening the book.
- If the layout is wrong, try a different conversion profile, simplify complex PDF pages or use an EPUB edition instead.
The manufacturer’s wording is specific: “MOBI and PDF files may not be fully supported by the firmware, so we recommend converting them through the XTEINK official app before transferring them to your device.” A phone generally avoids this particular step because an app may already support the store, format or cloud service you use, although DRM and account restrictions still apply.

Dictionary, notes and accessibility
The original-X4 review reports no dictionary and limited stock-software features. It also notes that alternative CrossPoint Reader software fixed some formatting issues. Those are observations about that reviewed generation and software, not a guarantee that every Classic unit behaves identically. If instant dictionary lookup, annotations, text resizing, screen readers or a broad accessibility toolkit are central to your reading, verify the exact app and operating-system support on your phone before choosing the smaller reader.
Battery, charging and carrying two devices
The Classic’s 920 mAh cell is small, and Xteink advertises up to 10 days of casual reading. Treat that as an upper-bound manufacturer estimate rather than a promise. Wireless radios, frequent page refreshes, Bluetooth use and standby time can change the result.
A phone’s battery is affected by far more than reading: mobile radios, cameras, background synchronization, navigation and video can consume power. That makes a direct “days longer” claim impossible without specifying the phone, brightness, network and usage pattern. The phone’s practical advantage is that you already charge it; the reader’s advantage is that reading does not compete with calls or navigation for the same battery.

At 68 g, the Classic adds little mass to a bag. It is thin enough for a pocket, but its E Ink panel still needs protection. The independent original-X4 review advises care because the screen is fragile. A case can reduce risk, yet it also adds bulk and may interfere with the X4 V2 magnetic-ring position.
Model generations you should not mix up
| Model | Screen and controls | Lighting | Battery listed in comparison coverage | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X3 | 3.7-inch, 259 PPI; buttons | No front light | 650 mAh | Even less text area than the Classic |
| X4 (original) | 4.3-inch E Ink; no touchscreen | No front light | Not stated in the cited review | Review reported basic software, formatting problems, no dictionary and no DRM support |
| X4 Classic / X4 V2 | 4.3-inch, 219 PPI; physical buttons; no touchscreen | No front light | 920 mAh | Current manufacturer specifications; MOBI and PDF may need conversion |
| X4 Pro | 4.3-inch, 219 PPI; touchscreen and buttons | Front light | 1,100 mAh | Separate model; do not attribute its lighting or touchscreen to the Classic |
TechRadar’s October 10, 2026 comparison supplies the X3, Classic and Pro figures in this table. It also discusses an S4 model with Android, but its availability and battery performance were not established well enough here to make it part of the phone-versus-Classic recommendation.
Price and availability require a date check
At access on October 13, 2026, the official X4 Classic listing showed $79 and “Sold out.” That is a time-specific stock snapshot, not a permanent price or an indication of future availability. The original X4 was recorded at $69 in the historical review linked above, but that older figure should not be used as the current price of the Classic.
Before ordering, confirm the model name, generation, included storage, return policy and whether the seller is shipping the Classic, the original X4 or another family model. Also verify that a case or screen protector matches the exact generation, especially if you intend to use the magnetic ring.

Choose the X4 Classic when most of these statements are true
- You want a dedicated reading device with no ordinary phone notifications.
- About 68 g and a 114 × 69 × 4.9 mm body materially improve portability for you.
- You prefer physical page-turn buttons over touch gestures.
- You usually read in daylight or carry a small external light.
- Your library is mainly EPUB or TXT, or you are willing to convert MOBI and PDF files.
- You accept frequent page turns and a small text area.
- You want reading to remain separate from the battery and distractions of your phone.
Choose the smartphone when any of these requirements dominates
- You read in bed, on overnight flights or anywhere without dependable ambient light.
- You need a larger page, pinch-to-zoom, color illustrations or comfortable PDF viewing.
- You rely on bookstore, library, subscription or cloud apps.
- You use dictionary lookup, translation, annotations or accessibility tools regularly.
- You do not want to carry, charge and protect a second device.
- You need one device for reading plus navigation, communication and other tasks.
Consider a different E Ink model if the Classic’s compromise is the problem
If you want E Ink but cannot live without built-in lighting or touch, the X4 Pro addresses those specific omissions. It remains a small reader, however, so its larger feature set does not change the fundamental limit of a 4.3-inch display. If your priority is maximum text per page, look beyond the mini category rather than expecting the Classic to behave like a full-size reader.

“The book opens, but the layout is broken.”
Complex PDFs, embedded fonts and unsupported MOBI features can exceed the Classic’s firmware. Convert the file with the official app, obtain an EPUB edition or simplify the document before transferring it. Keep the original file as a backup.

“I expected to read in the dark.”
The Classic has no front light. Add a clip-on or bedside lamp, or choose a phone or a separately specified front-lit model such as the X4 Pro.
“The device feels too cramped.”
Increase the font size only if the resulting page turns remain acceptable; larger type reduces text capacity further. If you still find yourself losing your place or pressing the button constantly, the screen is below your practical minimum and a phone with a larger usable area will be more satisfying.
“A magnetic case does not line up.”
Check whether the accessory is for the original X4 or X4 V2. Xteink states that the Classic’s built-in magnetic-ring position differs from the first generation.

Use a fitted case, keep it away from keys and avoid pressure on the E Ink panel. The small body is convenient, but compactness does not make the screen impact-proof.
Verdict
The Xteink X4 Classic is better for a narrow but real use case: a very light, distraction-free pocket reader for people who read in adequate light and accept a 4.3-inch page, button navigation and occasional file conversion. Its portability and dedicated purpose are compelling precisely because it does less than a phone.
A small smartphone is the better all-round reading tool when flexibility matters more than separation. It gives you a larger practical reading area, touch controls, illuminated reading, app and store access, and no additional device to carry. Unless the Classic’s tiny size and distraction-free design solve a problem you regularly have, the phone is the safer default.
Whichever you choose, judge the decision by your actual reading locations, file formats and tolerance for page turns. Those factors matter more than the label “mini” or an unverified promise of longer battery life.
