Which encoder should you choose?
Choose OBS for flexibility and platform coverage
OBS is the straightforward choice if you need support for Windows, macOS, or Linux, want to avoid a software license cost, or value an open-source and highly configurable workflow. Its broad plugin and scripting ecosystem can suit a production that needs custom scenes or automation, but it still runs on a locally managed computer.
Choose XSplit if its Windows workflow fits
XSplit may suit a Windows-based setup if its composition tools or built-in features match your production better. Check the specific license tier against your output resolution, branding preferences, scene count, and whether the stream is commercial. The free-tier restrictions make that check especially important for a public channel.
Do not treat either app as an uptime guarantee
A verified encoder listing means YouTube documents the software as an option; it does not guarantee that a stream will survive a computer crash, application failure, power loss, or unstable connection. The reviewed sources do not establish that OBS or XSplit is more reliable for continuous operation. Your machine, network, configuration, monitoring, and recovery plan all matter.

Configure and test a 24/7 desktop stream
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to match the encoder to the intended output. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP.

These are YouTube Help’s H.264 figures on the encoder settings page, accessed in 2026—not universal settings for every codec or stream. Select the relevant range for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s streaming tips say the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% headroom. If the connection cannot sustain the selected output, lower the settings rather than relying on a peak speed.
Connect the encoder safely
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy its stream key into the intended encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s password and address; keep the key private and do not paste it into an untrusted service or share it publicly.
- In OBS or XSplit, select YouTube or the appropriate custom RTMP destination and enter the key. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval that match YouTube’s settings guidance and your connection.
- Review YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop controls in the stream settings if you want the encoder to start or stop the stream. These controls do not establish automatic recovery after a computer, application, or network failure.
- Run a representative test before relying on the setup. Include the intended scenes, audio, motion, output settings, and network conditions. Preview in Live Control Room and check its stream-health messages.
- During operation, monitor video and audio. If recording a local archive, check that the files are continuing to grow. YouTube’s guidance says to monitor stream health and review messages during the event.
Plan for interruptions and operating costs
A local encoder needs a computer and network connection that remain available for the stream. Decide in advance who will respond to a power or connection outage, encoder crash, or YouTube stream-health warning; test the recovery steps rather than assuming Auto-start or Auto-stop will restart a failed setup. The available sources establish no universal PC specification or requirement to buy a new computer, camera, capture card, microphone, power backup, or network accessory for a 24/7 stream.
