XRP vs. Bitcoin and Ethereum: Key Differences for New Investors

XRP, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) are assets native to three different networks, designed around different capabilities and operating rules. Bitcoin focuses on peer-to-peer digital currency, Ethereum supports programmable applications, and XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a network built with payments in mind. Those differences can help you understand what each asset is for—but they do not establish which is the better investment.

What is the difference between XRP, Bitcoin and Ethereum?

Asset Native network Primary purpose or capability
Bitcoin (BTC) Bitcoin Peer-to-peer digital currency, with a relatively focused design for transferring value.
Ether (ETH) Ethereum The asset of a programmable platform for applications and digital economies; smart contracts are a core capability.
XRP XRP Ledger (XRPL) The ledger’s native asset, created for payments. Ripple describes XRP as facilitating XRPL transactions and bridging currencies in the ledger’s decentralized exchange.

These are descriptions of design and intended capabilities, not proof of current adoption, institutional use or investment value. A network’s capabilities, its actual use, demand for its asset and the asset’s market price are separate questions. Ethereum.org’s comparison of Bitcoin and Ethereum and the XRP Ledger’s XRP overview describe these distinctions.

Is XRP the same as Ripple?

No. XRP is a digital asset, the XRP Ledger (XRPL) is the network, and Ripple is a company. The XRPL describes XRP as its native asset and says XRP is independent of Ripple. Ripple’s descriptions of how its company uses or views XRP should be understood as company statements, not as definitions that make the company, asset and network interchangeable. See the XRPL overview and Ripple’s XRP page.

How do their consensus systems differ?

Consensus is how a network’s participants agree on valid transactions and the order in which to record them. The three networks use different mechanisms, with different assumptions and tradeoffs; the mechanism alone does not prove that an asset or network is categorically safer.

  • Bitcoin uses proof-of-work. Miners compete to add blocks. Confirmation security is probabilistic: additional confirmations make a transaction harder to reverse, rather than making it instantly final.
  • Ethereum uses proof-of-stake. Validators stake ETH, and dishonest behavior can result in a loss of stake. Ethereum describes finalized blocks as economically difficult to reverse.
  • XRPL uses its own consensus protocol. Participants agree on ledger state and transaction order. In the protocol analysis by Brad Chase and Ethan MacBrough, published in 2018, each node chooses a unique list of trusted nodes (a UNL); sufficient overlap among those lists matters for safety and the network’s ability to keep making progress. That analysis explains a design consideration, not a current measurement of validator concentration.

For the networks’ high-level descriptions, see Ethereum.org’s Bitcoin–Ethereum comparison and the XRPL consensus documentation.

How do supply and issuance differ?

Asset Supply and issuance
Bitcoin Protocol rules impose an eventual cap of 21 million BTC. New BTC enter circulation through mining rewards, which halve every 210,000 blocks. Ethereum.org estimates the last bitcoin will be mined around 2140; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed calendar date.
Ether ETH has no fixed supply cap. Protocol rules issue ETH in relation to the amount staked and burn ETH in relation to network activity, so net supply can depend on conditions over a given period.
XRP The XRPL says the original maximum supply is 100 billion XRP and that all XRP already exists; XRP is not mined into existence over time.

Ripple separately reported that, as of June 30, 2026, it held 37,656,053,914 XRP, 62,329,587,596 XRP had been distributed, and 32,600,000,000 XRP was placed in escrow. These are Ripple-reported figures with definitions on its page, not an independent measure of circulating supply or concentration. They should not be conflated with the XRPL overview’s older escrow graphic, which is explicitly labeled “As of October 2024.” Sources: Ethereum.org, the XRPL overview and Ripple’s XRP page.

How do transaction settlement, confirmations and fees compare?

The XRPL states that transactions on its ledger can settle in 3–5 seconds. That is the network’s stated ledger settlement time; it is not a promise that an exchange withdrawal, bank transfer, fiat conversion or end-to-end cross-border payment will take the same time.

Ethereum.org gives broad, approximate finality descriptions: Bitcoin is often treated as highly secure after six confirmations, which average about an hour, while Ethereum finality is described as around 15 minutes. These are general explanations, not live performance guarantees. Transaction fees on all three networks can vary with network conditions. A current, time-aligned fee dataset for all three is not established here, so a simple fixed-fee ranking would be misleading. See Ethereum.org’s comparison and the XRPL overview.

What does the SEC’s 2026 material say about these assets?

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s educational page discussing federal securities laws and 2026 interpretive guidance lists Bitcoin, Ether and XRP as examples of digital commodities. Read that statement narrowly: it does not decide the legal status of every product, transaction or arrangement involving those assets, and it does not apply as a universal classification across jurisdictions. Legal analysis can depend on the facts, product structure and location. See the SEC’s crypto-assets page.

What should a new investor consider beyond network design?

Technical characteristics do not settle the practical question of whether an asset suits a particular person. A network may be capable of a certain kind of transaction without guaranteeing demand for its token, price appreciation or protection against loss. Consider the risks and responsibilities around the asset as well as the network.

  • Market risk: Prices can fluctuate, and network speed or supply rules do not predict future returns.
  • Custody and user error: A wallet stores the keys used to control cryptoassets. Software and hardware wallets involve different practical tradeoffs; self-custody makes protecting keys and recovery information the user’s responsibility. The XRPL overview describes both wallet types.
  • Other risks: Liquidity, regulation, software, counterparties and concentration can matter independently of consensus design.

A hardware wallet that supports XRP may be one self-custody option, but wallet support should be checked for the specific asset and transaction types you intend to use. A wallet can help you control private keys; it cannot protect an asset’s market price. The XRPL overview discusses wallets and XRP.

How should you use this comparison?

Start by separating what the asset is, what its network enables, how the network reaches agreement, and how supply is managed. Then evaluate legal, market and custody risks on their own terms. None of these technical differences establishes that XRP, Bitcoin or Ether is the better investment for you.
